Book excerpt: This book contains papers to be presented at the Sixth International Conference on the topic. Materials modelling and characterisation have become ever more closely intertwined. Characterisation, in essence, connects the abstract material model with the real-world behaviour of the material in question. Characterisation of complex materials often requires a combination of experimental and computational techniques. The conference is convened biennially to facilitate the sharing of recent work between researchers who use computational methods, those who perform experiments, and those who do both, in all areas of materials characterisation. The papers cover such topics as: Computational models and experiments; Mechanical characterisation and testing; Micro and macro materials characterisation; Corrosion problems; Innovative experimental technologies; Recycled materials; Thermal analysis; Advances in composites; Cementitious materials; Structural health monitoring; Energy materials.

Book Synopsis Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites by : Peter Beaumont
Download or read book Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites written by Peter Beaumont and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Integrity and Durability of Advanced Composites: Innovative Modelling Methods and Intelligent Design presents scientific and technological research from leading composite materials scientists and engineers that showcase the fundamental issues and practical problems that affect the development and exploitation of large composite structures. As predicting precisely where cracks may develop in materials under stress is an age old mystery in the design and building of large-scale engineering structures, the burden of testing to provide "fracture safe design" is imperative. Readers will learn to transfer key ideas from research and development to both the design engineer and end-user of composite materials. This comprehensive text provides the information users need to understand deformation and fracture phenomena resulting from impact, fatigue, creep, and stress corrosion cracking and how these phenomena can affect reliability, life expectancy, and the durability of structures. Book Synopsis Computational Mesomechanics of Composites by : Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr
Download or read book Computational Mesomechanics of Composites written by Leon L. Mishnaevsky, Jr and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-08-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of composite materials can be improved by tailoring their microstructures. Optimal microstructures of composites, which ensure desired properties of composite materials, can be determined in computational experiments. The subject of this book is the computational analysis of interrelations between mechanical properties (e.g., strength, damage resistance stiffness) and microstructures of composites. The methods of mesomechanics of composites are reviewed, and applied to the modelling of the mechanical behaviour of different groups of composites. Individual chapters are devoted to the computational analysis of the microstructure- mechanical properties relationships of particle reinforced composites, functionally graded and particle clusters reinforced composites, interpenetrating phase and unidirectional fiber reinforced composites, and machining tools materials.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Homogenization and its Applications to Composites, Polycrystals and Smart Materials by : P. Ponte Castaneda
Download or read book Nonlinear Homogenization and its Applications to Composites, Polycrystals and Smart Materials written by P. Ponte Castaneda and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-17 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although several books and conference proceedings have already appeared dealing with either the mathematical aspects or applications of homogenization theory, there seems to be no comprehensive volume dealing with both aspects. The present volume is meant to fill this gap, at least partially, and deals with recent developments in nonlinear homogenization emphasizing applications of current interest. It contains thirteen key lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Workshop on Nonlinear Homogenization and Its Applications to Composites, Polycrystals and Smart Materials. The list of thirty one contributed papers is also appended. The key lectures cover both fundamental, mathematical aspects of homogenization, including nonconvex and stochastic problems, as well as several applications in micromechanics, thin films, smart materials, and structural and topology optimization. One lecture deals with a topic important for nanomaterials: the passage from discrete to continuum problems by using nonlinear homogenization methods. Some papers reveal the role of parameterized or Young measures in description of microstructures and in optimal design. Other papers deal with recently developed methods – both analytical and computational – for estimating the effective behavior and field fluctuations in composites and polycrystals with nonlinear constitutive behavior. All in all, the volume offers a cross-section of current activity in nonlinear homogenization including a broad range of physical and engineering applications. The careful reader will be able to identify challenging open problems in this still evolving field. For instance, there is the need to improve bounding techniques for nonconvex problems, as well as for solving geometrically nonlinear optimum shape-design problems, using relaxation and homogenization methods.
