Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1976, the authors present a theory of cognitive development based upon an information-processing approach. This approach leads to the presentation of precise models of performance on a number of tasks derived from a set of critical quantitative concepts: elementary quantification, number concepts, conservation and transitivity. These models encompass both early and late developmental stages, and a process model of the developmental mechanism itself is outlined. Here is one of the first attempts to apply the information-processing view of cognitive psychology to developmental issues raised by empirical work in the Piagetian tradition. It includes an extensive analysis of the processing demands of several of the classic tasks and describes the development of a system capable of performing a wide range of other tasks, including the ability to be self-modifying. It provides an introduction to general concepts and detailed properties of cognitive models stated as production systems. It will be most valuable for students in cognitive development and related courses in developmental, cognitive, and educational psychology, as well as computer science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current age of information explosion, newly invented technological sensors and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Many sensor processing algorithms have incorporated some forms of computational intelligence as part of their core framework in problem solving. These algorithms have the capacity to generalize and discover knowledge for themselves and learn new information whenever unseen data are captured. The primary aim of sensor processing is to develop techniques to interpret, understand, and act on information contained in the data. The interest of this book is in developing intelligent signal processing in order to pave the way for smart sensors. This involves mathematical advancement of nonlinear signal processing theory and its applications that extend far beyond traditional techniques. It bridges the boundary between theory and application, developing novel theoretically inspired methodologies targeting both longstanding and emergent signal processing applications. The topic ranges from phishing detection to integration of terrestrial laser scanning, and from fault diagnosis to bio-inspiring filtering. The book will appeal to established practitioners, along with researchers and students in the emerging field of smart sensors processing.

Book excerpt: Fundamental Studies in Computer Science, 3: Conceptual Information Processing discusses a theory of natural language and implementation of that theory on a computer, focusing basically on an Artificial Intelligence approach to linguistics. This book aims to write computer programs that could understand and generate sentences, which is intended as a first step towards the long range goal of a computer that can communicate with people in natural language. The topics covered include computational linguistics, conceptual dependency theory, history of the analyzer, representation in memory, and structure of BABEL. This publication is a good reference for researchers and specialists working in the field of computer science.

Part One is a brief introduction to the topics that make up Computer Science, some of which you would expect to find as course modules in a Computer Science programme. These descriptions should help you to tell the difference between Computer Science as taught in different departments and so help you to choose a course that best suits you. Part Two builds on what you have learned about the nature of Computer Science by giving you guidance in choosing universities and making your applications to them. Then Part Three gives you some advice on what to do once you get to university, how to get the most out of studying your Computer Science degree. The principal objective of the book is to produce happy students, students who know what they are letting themselves in for when they start a Computer Science course, and hence find themselves very well suited for the course they choose.

Book excerpt: Welcome to the proceedings of the 10th Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2009) held in Bangkok, Thailand, December 15-18, 2009. Since its inception in 2000, PCM has rapidly grown into a major conference on multimedia in the Asia- Pacific Rim region and has built up its reputation around the world. Following the success of the preceding conferences, PCM 2008 in Taiwan, PCM 2007 in Hong Kong, PCM 2006 in China, PCM 2005 in Korea, PCM 2004 in Japan, PCM 2003 in Singapore, PCM 2002 in Taiwan, PCM 2001 in China, and PCM 2000 in Australia, the tenth PCM brought researchers, developers, practitioners, and educators together to disseminate their new discoveries in the field of multimedia. Theoretical bre- throughs and practical systems were presented at this conference, thanks to the s- port of Naresuan University, Mahanakorn University of Technology, and the IEEE Thailand Section. PCM 2009 featured a comprehensive program including keynote talks, regular - per presentations, posters, and special sessions. We received 171 papers from 16 countries including Australia, Sweden, German, Italy, Iran, France, Canada, China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the UK, and the USA. After a rigorous review process, we accepted only 67 oral presentations and 45 poster pr- entations. Four special sessions were also organized by world-leading researchers.
