Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Graphics from Scratch demystifies the algorithms used in modern graphics software and guides beginners through building photorealistic 3D renders. Computer graphics programming books are often math-heavy and intimidating for newcomers. Not this one. Computer Graphics from Scratch takes a simpler approach by keeping the math to a minimum and focusing on only one aspect of computer graphics, 3D rendering. You’ll build two complete, fully functional renderers: a raytracer, which simulates rays of light as they bounce off objects, and a rasterizer, which converts 3D models into 2D pixels. As you progress you’ll learn how to create realistic reflections and shadows, and how to render a scene from any point of view. Pseudocode examples throughout make it easy to write your renderers in any language, and links to live JavaScript demos of each algorithm invite you to explore further on your own. Learn how to: Use perspective projection to draw 3D objects on a 2D plane Simulate the way rays of light interact with surfaces Add mirror-like reflections and cast shadows to objects Render a scene from any camera position using clipping planes Use flat, Gouraud, and Phong shading to mimic real surface lighting Paint texture details onto basic shapes to create realistic-looking objects Whether you’re an aspiring graphics engineer or a novice programmer curious about how graphics algorithms work, Gabriel Gambetta’s simple, clear explanations will quickly put computer graphics concepts and rendering techniques within your reach. All you need is basic coding knowledge and high school math. Computer Graphics from Scratch will cover the rest.

Book excerpt: The decades of the 1970s and 1980s were a very exciting period of discovery in the field of computer graphics. It was a time when new rendering algorithms, different modeling strategies, clever animation techniques, and significant advances in photorealism were being made. Complementing these software developments, hardware systems were dominated by raster technology and programmers had access to excellent workstations on which to develop their graphics systems. In the 1990s, incredible advances in computer graphics are far surpassing developments made during the last twenty years. Yesterdays computer graphics have given way to todays virtual reality. This volume brings together contributions from internationalexperts on the diverse, yet important, range of topics that impact the design and application of virtual environments. Topics covered include 3-D modeling; new approaches to rendering virtual environments; recent research into the problems of animating and visualizing virtual environments; applications for virtual reality systems; and simulation of complex behaviors.Computer Graphics: Developments in Virtual Environments provides a unique opportunity to examine current practice and expert thinking. It is essential reading for students, practitioners, researchers, or anyone else who wishes to find out more about this exciting area.Provides comprehensive coverage of the latest topics in computer graphics, virtual reality, and humancomputer interactionContributors are international experts in the fieldExamines many real-world applications in a wide variety of fields

Book excerpt: This book contains mainly a selection of papers that were presented at the International Workshop on High Performance Computing/or Computer Graphics and Visualisation, held in Swansea, United Kingdom on 3-4 July 1995. The workshop was sponsored by the HEFCWI Initiative on ·Parallel Computing - Foundations and Applications·, and it has provided the international computer graphics community with a platform for: • assessing and reviewing the impact of the development of high performance computing on the progress of computer graphics and visualisation; • presenting the current use of high performance computing architecture and software tools in computer graphics and visualisation, and the development of parallel graphics algorithms; • identifying potential high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation, and encouraging members of the graphics community to think about their problems from the perspective of parallelism. The book is divided into six sections. The first section, which acts as the introduction of the book, gives an overview of the current state of the art It contains a comprehensive survey, by Whitman, of parallel algorithms for computer graphics and visualisation; and a discussion, by Hansen, on the past, present and future high performance computing applications in computer graphics and visualisation. The second section is focused on the design and implementation of high performance architecture, software tools and algorithms for surface rendering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the third paper in this chapter, Mike Pratt provides an historical intro duction to solid modeling. He presents the development of the three most freqently used techniques: cellular subdivision, constructive solid modeling and boundary representation. Although each of these techniques devel oped more or less independently, today the designer's needs dictate that a successful system allows access to all of these methods. For example, sculptured surfaces are generally represented using a boundary represen tation. However, the design of a complex vehicle generally dictates that a sculptured surface representation is most efficient for the 'skin' while constructive solid geometry representation is most efficent for the inter nal mechanism. Pratt also discusses the emerging concept of design by 'feature line'. Finally, he addresses the very important problem of data exchange between solid modeling systems and the progress that is being made towards developing an international standard. With the advent of reasonably low cost scientific workstations with rea sonable to outstanding graphics capabilities, scientists and engineers are increasingly turning to computer analysis for answers to fundamental ques tions and to computer graphics for present~tion of those answers. Although the current crop of workstations exhibit quite impressive computational ca pability, they are still not capable of solving many problems in a reasonable time frame, e. g. , executing computational fluid dynamics and finite element codes or generating complex ray traced or radiosity based images. In the sixth chapter Mike Muuss of the U. S.

The Phoenix Principle “Create Marketplace Disruption is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining. Adam Hartung offers business managers and leaders new insights to long-term success that apply across markets and industries.” –Steve Burke, President, Comcast Cable Communications, Philadelphia, PA "Talking innovation is easier than practicing innovation. Adam offers an excellent approach for corporations to identify how to innovate to gain competitive advantage. A must read.” –Praveen Gupta, Editor-in-Chief, International Journal of Innovation Science and Chairman, Accelper Consulting, Schaumburg, IL Some companies can’t change in response to market disruptions. Those companies die. Other companies do respond...eventually. They survive, but they see their profits squeezed, their growth flattened. Then, there are the long-term winners: companies that create their own disruptions and thrive on change. In Create Marketplace Disruption, Adam Hartung shows how to become one of those rare companies, creating lasting growth and profits. This book reveals why so many companies behave in ways that are utterly incompatible with long-term success...and why even “good to great” companies are struggling for air. You’ll discover how to reposition your organization away from the Flats and Swamps of traditional Defend and Extend Management and back into the Rapids of accelerated growth. Hartung demonstrates how to attack competitors’ Lock-ins, make their Success Formulas obsolete, and create the White Space needed to invent your own new formulas for success. Create Marketplace Disruption shows how disrupting yourself is critical to reaping the benefits of market changes, and part of a process that executives and strategists can reproduce over and over again for improved results. How we got into this mess—and how to get out of it The myth of perpetuity and the dark side of success Reinventing success: no more Defend and Extend Creating your new Success Formulas and keeping them competitively advantaged Why “thinking outside the box” doesn’t work First, get outside the box. Then, think! Maintaining ”The Phoenix Principle” for long-term success Practicing Disruption until it comes naturally
