Book Synopsis Development and Structure of Prometheus by : Cordy Tymstra

Book excerpt: Accurate, high-resolution fire behavior prediction is a critical component of fire management decision-making before and during fires. Prometheus is a deterministic fire growth simulation model that was developed to help fire managers to understand the probable consequences of their decisions. It uses spatial input data on topography (slope, aspect, and elevation), fuel types, and weather to simulate fire growth by applying Huygens principle of wave propagation to the rate-of-spread predictions from the Canadian Forest Fire Behavior Prediction System of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System. This approach produces detailed fire perimeters at user-specified display time step intervals. Each active vertex along the perimeter has corresponding fire behavior output. Exported fire perimeters are compatible with geographic information systems. Additionally, three interpolation techniques are available to produce optional raster fire behavior outputs. This report documents the structure of the Prometheus model and an assessment of its performance. The report includes a general discussion of approaches to the modeling of fire growth simulation and explains the vector propagation technique used in Prometheus. The limitations and assumptions of applying the model, as well as the most appropriate directions for future research, are also discussed.

Download or read book BEHAVE written by Patricia L. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third publication describWilding the BEHAVE system of computer programs for predicting behavior of wildland fires. This publication adds the following predictive capabilities: distance firebrands are lofted ahead of a wind-driven surface fire, probabilities of firebrands igniting spot fires, scorch height of trees, and percentage of tree mortality. The system includes a separate module for graphing moisture content of fine, dead fuels. Basic assumptions, limitations, and application of the prediction models are discussed. Previous publications in the BEHAVE series are BEHAVE: fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system-FUEL subsystem (Burgan and Rothermel 1984), and BEHAVE: fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system-BURN subsystem, Part 1 (Andrews 1986).

Book Synopsis Development of Input Data Layers for the FARSITE Fire Growth Model for the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Complex, USA by : Robert E. Keane
Download or read book Development of Input Data Layers for the FARSITE Fire Growth Model for the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Complex, USA written by Robert E. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel and vegetation spatial data layers required by the spatially explicit fire growth model FARSITE were developed for all langs in and around the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area in Idaho and Montana. Satellite imagery and terrain modeling were used to create the three base vegetation spatial data layers of potential vegetation, cover type, and structural stage. Fire behavior fuel models and crown characteristics were assigned to combinations of base layer categories on these maps by local fire managers, ecologists, and existing data. FARSITE fuels maps are used to simulate growth of prescribed natural fires in the wilderness area, aiding managers in the planning and allocation of resources. An extensive accuracy assessment of all maps indicated fuels layers are about 60 percent accurate. This methodology was designed to be replicated for other areas.

Book Synopsis Modeling Moisture Content of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels by : Richard C. Rothermel
Download or read book Modeling Moisture Content of Fine Dead Wildland Fuels written by Richard C. Rothermel and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a model for predicting moisture content of fine fuels for use with the BEHAVE fire behavior and fuel modeling system. The model is intended to meet the need for more accurate predictions of fine fuel moisture, particularly in northern conifer stands and on days following rain. The model is based on the Canadian Fine Fuel Moisture Code (FFMC), modified to account for solar heating of fuels and to predict diurnal trends in fine fuel moisture. The model may be initiated without extensive data on prior weather. When compared to the FFMC and the fire behavior officers' procedures, the new model gave consistently better predictions over the complete range of fuel conditions.
