Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computer Aided Engineering may be defined as an approach to solving tech nological problems in which most or all of the steps involved are automated through the use of computers, data bases and mathematical models. The success of this ap proach, considering hot forming, is tied very directly to an understanding of material behaviour when subjected to deformation at high temperatures. There is general agreement among engineers that not enough is known about that topic -and this gave the initial impetus for the project described in the present study. The authors secured a research grant from NATO (Special Research Grant #390/83) with a mandate to study the "State-of-the-Art of Controlled Rolling". What follows is the result of that study. There are five chapters in this Monograph. The first one, entitled "State-of-the Art of Controlled Rolling" discusses industrial and laboratory practices and research designed to aid in the development of microalloyed steels of superior quality. Follow ing this is the chapter "Methods of Determining Stress-Strain Curves at Elevated Temperatures". The central concern here is the material's resistance to deformation or in other words, its flow strength, the knowledge of which is absolutely essential for the efficient and economical utilization of the computers controlling the rolling process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a gap by presenting our current knowledge and understanding of continuum-based concepts behind computational methods used for microstructure and process simulation of engineering materials above the atomic scale. The volume provides an excellent overview on the different methods, comparing the different methods in terms of their respective particular weaknesses and advantages. This trains readers to identify appropriate approaches to the new challenges that emerge every day in this exciting domain. Divided into three main parts, the first is a basic overview covering fundamental key methods in the field of continuum scale materials simulation. The second one then goes on to look at applications of these methods to the prediction of microstructures, dealing with explicit simulation examples, while the third part discusses example applications in the field of process simulation. By presenting a spectrum of different computational approaches to materials, the book aims to initiate the development of corresponding virtual laboratories in the industry in which these methods are exploited. As such, it addresses graduates and undergraduates, lecturers, materials scientists and engineers, physicists, biologists, chemists, mathematicians, and mechanical engineers.

This is possibly due to the attractive balance of properties which is achievable with the correct control of the interaction between steel chemistry and processing parameters. Microalloying is applied to a wide range of products and has two main goals: to improve the mechanical properties and to save costs.

Book excerpt: Steel Informatics aims to review the application of data-driven computing techniques related to the design of steel, including phase transformation, composition-process-property correlation, and different processing techniques, particularly deformation and joining. This book initiates with fundamentals of informatics followed by a description of applications of statistical analyses in defining the different attributes of steel. The proceeding chapters of this book cover recent applications of statistical, machine learning, expert systems, and optimization algorithms in the domains of iron and steel making, casting, deformation, phase transformation and heat treatment, microstructure analysis, and design of steel. Features: • Exclusive title focussing on informatics in steel design. • Covers related statistics as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning aspects. • Explains metallurgical aspects lucidly for the data scientists, steel researchers, and industries. • Discusses all aspects of steel technology. • Describes pertinent tools used for related computations. This book is useful for researchers, professionals, and graduate students in metallurgy, materials science, steel and welding, and computational materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steels are by far the most important construction materials for many applications. Many modern concepts of materials science are being used in steels, e.g., in micro-alloyed steels minute amounts of alloying elements form nanoscale carbides to yield superior strength values. All of these mechanisms have to be controlled in the production facilities on a scale of hundreds of tons. This book addresses these new concepts for improving the efficiency of production technologies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses selected aspects of steel-deformation modelling, both at very high temperatures and under the conditions in which the liquid and the solid phases coexist. Steel-deformation modelling with its simultaneous solidification is particularly difficult due to its specificity and complexity. With regard to industrial applications and the development of new, integrated continuous casting and rolling processes, the issues related to modelling are becoming increasingly important. Since the numerous industrial tests that are necessary when traditional methods are used to design the process of continuous casting immediately followed by rolling are expensive, new modelling concepts have been sought. Comprehensive tests were applied to solve problems related to the deformation of steel with a semi-solid core. Physical tests using specialist laboratory instruments (Gleeble 3800thermo-mechanical simulator, NANOTOM 180 N computer tomography, Zwick Z250 testing equipment, 3D blue-light scanning systems), and advanced mathematical modelling (finite element method (FEM), SPH smoothed particle method, cellular automata method CA) were used. This book presents in detail a modelling concept for steel deformation in the semi-solid state based on an approach integrating physical and computer simulations with a full or partial information exchange between these areas.
