This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As director of a training program in medical informatics, I have found that one of the most frequent inquiries from graduate students is, "Although I am happy with my research focus and the work I have done, how can I design and carry out a practical evaluation that proves the value of my contribution?" Informatics is a multifaceted, interdisciplinary field with research that ranges from theoretical developments to projects that are highly applied and intended for near-term use in clinical settings. The implications of "proving" a research claim accordingly vary greatly depending on the details of an individual student's goals and thesis state ment. Furthermore, the dissertation work leading up to an evaluation plan is often so time-consuming and arduous that attempting the "perfect" evaluation is fre quently seen as impractical or as diverting students from central programming or implementation issues that are their primary areas of interest. They often ask what compromises are possible so they can provide persuasive data in support of their claims without adding another two to three years to their graduate student life. Our students clearly needed help in dealing more effectively with such dilem mas, and it was therefore fortuitous when, in the autumn of 1991, we welcomed two superb visiting professors to our laboratories.

Book Synopsis Information Technology in Health Science Education by : E. de Land
Download or read book Information Technology in Health Science Education written by E. de Land and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume is but an introduction to the growing use of computer-based systems in health-science education. It is unlikely that the intellectual or applied system constructs herein are either exhaustive of the field or immutable; growth is inevitable. For one thing, the field is still fractured and loosely organized, which is an inevitable description of an adolescent science in a rich mine of ideas. There is emerging, however, an organizing concept. A short look into the future indicates that educational system design will be dominated by a concept which, for want of a better term, we may call an "information system." Actually, this term de rives from an early New York World's Fair exhibition designed by Charles Eames entitled the "Informational Machine," in which the designer illustrated once again his insight into the future by showing how in a fundamental manner the digital computer promised to affect and to change our lives; and this change is by no means completed. Even during the publication of this volume, the basic sciences re quisite to the development of an information machine have evolved significantly. The three intellectual areas to watch are developments in artificial intelligence, graphics and man/machine interaction, and basic component and computer system design.
Book Synopsis Nursing Informatics by : Marion J. Ball
Download or read book Nursing Informatics written by Marion J. Ball and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nursing, like other health-related professions, is information-inten sive. The quality of care a patient receives is based on the soundness of judgment exercised by the health care team. Underlying sound judg ment is up-to-date information. Unless nurses have access to accurate and pertinent information, the care being rendered will not be of the highest standard. What is required is not necessarily more rapid and efficient informa tion services. Modern technology can process immense amounts of data in the blink of an eye. What we in the health professions need are information systems that are more intelligent, systems that can inte grate information from many sources, systems that analyze and syn thesize information and display it so that it may be applied directly in patient care-in other words, information that answers a question or even gives practical advice. In order to accomplish such objectives, work is needed to establish the scientific and theoretical basis for the use of computing and infor mation systems by health professionals. This is the research com ponent. In addition, there is the need for continued development and evaluation of practical information systems.
