Book excerpt: The presence on the market of more and more user friendly structural analysis software takes to the fact that a Finite Element code user is not always prepared to dress the stress engineer clothes. Facing this situation from a cultural point of view is not certainly easy, above all when economic interests are present and therefore the vendors tend to highlight the simplicity of using a modern program and to hide the possible dangers and the sources of possible errors.Everyone will agree with the fact that knowing the use of CAD software for technical drawing, i. e. knowing the way to generate graphical entities, will not make the user a designer; in the same way the knowledge, supported by modern structural codes, in building a finite element model will not make anyone a structural engineer. The idea of this book borns from here. These pages want to be a guide in order to give the instruments to the user that, for any reason, has to face the automatic structural calculation.Obviously the book just touches the surface of a problem which is very big and complex (many references to important aspects are not treated, such as instability, modal analysis and, last but not least, non linear analysis). Nevertheless we hope that this job will contribute, even if as a minimal part, to fill up the voids present in the "classical texts" that prefer to deal with the theory despite of the practical aspects.

Book Synopsis Computer-Aided Materials Selection During Structural Design by : National Research Council
Download or read book Computer-Aided Materials Selection During Structural Design written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-04-03 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of the proper materials for a structural component is a critical activity that is governed by many, often conflicting factors. Incorporating materials expert systems into CAD/CAM operations could assist designers by suggesting potential manufacturing processes for particular products to facilitate concurrent engineering, recommending various materials for a specific part based on a given set of characteristics, or proposing possible modifications of a design if suitable materials for a particular part do not exist. This book reviews the structural design process, determines the elements, and capabilities required for a materials selection expert system to assist design engineers, and recommends the areas of expert system and materials modeling research and development required to devise a materials-specific design system.

Book Synopsis High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering by : Hojjat Adeli
Download or read book High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering written by Hojjat Adeli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-performance multiprocessor computers provide new and interesting opportunities to solve large-scale structural engineering problems. However, the development of new computational models and algorithms that exploit the unique architecture of these machines remains a challenge. High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering explores the use of supercomputers with vectorization and parallel processing capabilities in structural engineering applications. The book focuses on the optimization of large structures subjected to the complicated, implicit, and discontinuous constraints of commonly used design codes and presents robust parallel-algorithms for analysis of these structures. The authors apply the algorithms to and analyze the performance of minimum weight designs of large, steel space trusses and moment-resisting frames, with or without bracings, consisting of discrete standard shapes. They clearly show that adroit and judicious use of vectorization techniques can improved the speedup of an optimization algorithm, and that parallel processing can lead to even further speedup. With its review of the necessary background material, generous illustrations, and unique content, this is the definitive resource for the analysis and optimization of structure on shared-memory multiprocessor computers. By extension, High Performance Computing in Structural Engineering will prove equally valuable in distributed computing on a cluster of workstations

This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen major changes in the approach to Computer Aided Design (CAD) in the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) sector. CAD is increasingly becoming a standard design tool, facilitating lower development costs and a reduced design cycle. Not only does it allow a designer to model designs in two and three dimensions but also to model other dimensions, such as time and cost into designs. Computer Aided Design Guide for Architecture, Engineering and Construction provides an in-depth explanation of all the common CAD terms and tools used in the AEC sector. It describes each approach to CAD with detailed analysis and practical examples. Analysis is provided of the strength and weaknesses of each application for all members of the project team, followed by review questions and further tasks. Coverage includes: 2D CAD 3D CAD 4D CAD nD modelling Building Information Modelling parametric design, virtual reality and other areas of future expansion. With practical examples and step-by step guides, this book is essential reading for students of design and construction, from undergraduate level onwards.
