This chronological description of the entire preliminary design phase should be especially useful to young naval architects (or any ship designer who comes from a different expertise field) to build up an insight understanding of the entire process of ship design.

The elements of an 'ideal' program suitable for the preliminary structural design of ships are identified and used in the evaluation of available software. An assessment of the potential technical and economic benefits that might accrue from using a computer-aided design system is made.
