Book excerpt: Unforced and strongly forced cold-flow jets are simulated using a higher order finite volume CFD code. The jet was forced by varying the jet exit velocity over a range of forcing amplitudes and frequencies and it was found that the jet Strouhal number (St) was the important parameter in characterizing flowfield development. Further, the forced jets showed increased entrainment and increased entrainment rates as compared to the non-forced jets.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted on methane, laminar-jet, diffusion flames with coaxial, forced-air flow to examine flame shapes in zero-gravity and in situations where buoyancy aids (normal-gravity flames) or hinders (inverted-gravity flames) the flow velocities. Fuel nozzles ranged in size from 0.051 to 0.305 cm inside radius, while the coaxial, convergent, air nozzle had a 1.4 cm inside radius at the fuel exit plane. Fuel flows ranged from 1.55 to 10.3 cu cm/sec and air flows from 0 to 597 cu cm/sec. A computer program developed under a previous government contract was used to calculate the characteristic dimensions of normal and zero-gravity flames only. The results include a comparison between the experimental data and the computed axial flame lengths for normal gravity and zero gravity which showed good agreement. Inverted-gravity flame width was correlated with the ratio of fuel nozzle radius to average fuel velocity. Flame extinguishment upon entry into weightlessness was studied, and it was found that relatively low forced-air velocities (approximately 10 cm/sec) are sufficient to sustain methane flame combustion in zero gravity. Flame color is also discussed. Haggard, J. B., Jr. Glenn Research Center NASA-TP-1841, E-487 RTOP 506-55-22

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to study the burning of laminar gas jet diffusion flames in a zero-gravity environment. The tests were conducted in the Lewis Research Center's 2.2- Second-Zero-Gravity Facility and were a part of a continuing effort investigating the effects of gravity on basic combustion processes. The photographic results indicate that steady state gas jet diffusion flames existed in zero gravity but they were geometrically quite different than their normal-gravity counterparts. Methane-air flames were found to be approximately 50 percent longer and wider in zero gravity than in normal gravity.

Book excerpt: Novel sequential and parallel computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes based on method of lines (MOL) approach were developed for the numerical simulation of multi-component reacting flows using detailed transport and thermodynamic models. Both codes were applied to the prediction of a confined axisymmetric laminar co-flowing methane-air diffusion flame for which experimental data were available in the literature. Flame-sheet model for infinite-rate chemistry and one-, two-, and five- and ten-step reduced finite-rate reaction mechanisms were employed for methane-air combustion sub-model. A second-order high-resolution total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme based on Lagrange interpolation polynomial was proposed in order to alleviate spurious oscillations encountered in time evolution of flame propagation. Steady-state velocity, temperature and species profiles obtained by using infinite- and finite-rate chemistry models were validated against experimental data and other numerical solutions. They were found to be in reasonably good agreement with measurements and numerical results. The proposed difference scheme produced accurate results without spurious oscillations and numerical diffusion encountered in the classical schemes and hence was found to be a successful scheme applicable to strongly convective flow problems with non-uniform grid resolution. The code was also found to be an efficient tool for the prediction and understanding of transient combustion systems. This study constitutes the initial steps in the development of an efficient numerical scheme for direct numerical simulation (DNS) of unsteady, turbulent, multi-dimensional combustion with complex chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.

Book excerpt: Previous and current work show that flame length and soot luminosity of laminar and turbulent nonpremixed jet flames can be significantly reduced by high-frequency, high-amplitude forcing of the fuel flow rate. The current work focuses on understanding the physical mechanisms responsible for these changes to the flow/flame structure for the case where the forcing is sufficiently strong that significant reverse flow exists at the exit of the fuel delivery tube. The high-amplitude forcing is achieved by pulsing the fuel at the organ-pipe resonance frequency of the fuel delivery tube. Quantitative mixture fraction imaging in nonreacting jets indicates that the strongly pulsed jets exhibit dramatically enhanced mixing as compared to unpulsed jets. In the pulsed jets the mean mixture fraction falls below 0.08 in as little as 3 diameters downstream of the nozzle exit and no pure jet fluid exists outside of the nozzle due to in-tube mixing. Simultaneous OH and acetone planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) performed in methane jet flames shows that the OH zones are much broader and more wrinkled in the resonantly pulsed jet as compared to the unpulsed jet, and are greatly contorted by the vortical structures. A unique feature of the pulsed flames is that the reaction zones appear to close downstream of a vortical structure, just a few diameters downstream of the nozzle exit, in a region where the mixture fraction imaging (for non-reacting flows) shows reduced mixture fraction. Furthermore, the flame anchors on the outer-upstream edge of the vortical structures where the fuel mixture fraction is reduced due to enhanced entrainment. The significant in-tube premixing and the enhanced entrainment appear to be the predominant mechanisms that cause the reduction in length and luminosity of high-amplitude, high-frequency pulsed nonpremixed jet flames.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Gallery of Combustion and Fire is the first book to provide a graphical perspective of the extremely visual phenomenon of combustion in full color. It is designed primarily to be used in parallel with, and supplement existing combustion textbooks that are usually in black and white, making it a challenge to visualize such a graphic phenomenon. Each image includes a description of how it was generated, which is detailed enough for the expert but simple enough for the novice. Processes range from small scale academic flames up to full scale industrial flames under a wide range of conditions such as low and normal gravity, atmospheric to high pressures, actual and simulated flames, and controlled and uncontrolled flames. Containing over 500 color images, with over 230 contributors from over 75 organizations, this volume is a valuable asset for experts and novices alike.
