Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) has recently emerged as a field of research and practice that brings together many previously disjointed disciplines and tools of engineering and mathematics. MDO can be described as a technology, environment, or methodology for the design of complex, coupled engineering systems, such as aircraft, automobiles, and other mechanisms, the behavior of which is determined by interacting subsystems.

Book excerpt: Extensive numerical methods for computing design sensitivity are included in the text for practical application and software development. The numerical method allows integration of CAD-FEA-DSA software tools, so that design optimization can be carried out using CAD geometric models instead of FEA models. This capability allows integration of CAD-CAE-CAM so that optimized designs can be manufactured effectively.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the mathematical and algorithmic methods for the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) of complex mechanical systems such as aircraft or car engines. We have focused on the presentation of strategies efficiently and economically managing the different levels of complexity in coupled disciplines (e.g. structure, fluid, thermal, acoustics, etc.), ranging from Reduced Order Models (ROM) to full-scale Finite Element (FE) or Finite Volume (FV) simulations. Particular focus is given to the uncertainty quantification and its impact on the robustness of the optimal designs. A large collection of examples from academia, software editing and industry should also help the reader to develop a practical insight on MDO methods.

This book was released on 1999-02-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulation of an optimal dynamic structural system design problem requires identification of design variables that describe the structural system, a cost function that needs to be minimized, and performance and safety constraints for the system. The formulation of the problem depends upon the type of application and objectives to be achieved, i.e., the shape, the sizing, or topology design problem. Specific design variable definition, cost of function and constraints are dictated by the application. This volume is a comprehensive treatment of the general methods involved in this broadly fundamental problem and provides essential techniques in specific but pervasive structural dynamic systems elements and their optimization.

Book excerpt: In the world of modern engineering, rigorous and definite design methodologies are needed. However, many parts of engineering design are performed in either an ad-hoc manner or based on the intuition of the engineer. This is the first book to look at both stages of the design process – conceptual design and detailed design – and detail design methodologies for every step of the design process. Case studies show how practical design problems can be solved with analytic design methods. This book is an excellent introduction to the subject. The book’s practical focus will make the book useful to practicing engineers as a practical handbook of design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to intelligent design of structures as a novel kind of designing based on computational intelligence. The proposed methodology based on computational intelligence has some heuristic and learning attributes typical for natural intelligence. Computer models of the structures are built on the base of the finite element method (FEM), the boundary element method (BEM) or coupling of FEM and BEM. The short description of possible discrete models of structures using these methods is included in the Chapter 2. Various kinds of intelligent approaches using sequential, parallel, distributed, fuzzy and hybrid evolutionary, immune and particle swarm algorithms and neural computing are presented in Chapter 3. Different kinds of optimization such as shape, topology, size and material optimization for structures under static and dynamical mechanical and thermo-mechanical loadings, structures with cracks and composite structures are considered in Chapter 4. Multi-objective optimization for coupled problems is also taken into account. Several numerical examples illustrating these kinds of optimization are presented for 2-D (plane-stress or plane-strain, plates, shells) as well as 3-D structures. Chapter 5 is devoted to special problems related to solving inverse problems in which boundary conditions, defects such as voids or cracks and material characteristics, are unknown. Closing comments summarizing the book are presented in Chapter 6.
