Book excerpt: "Driven micro-cavities embedded in the wall beneath turbulent supersonic boundary layers are analyzed using two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics. This concept is a passive flow control technique in which very small cavities formed by arrays of thin vertical walls are oriented transverse to the flow direction and underlie the boundary layer. The purpose is to reduce or eliminate skin friction drag. Various micro-cavity configurations were analyzed at locations (0.1 m and 1 m) downstream of the leading edges of flat plates, for free-stream Mach numbers of 1.2, 2.0, and 3.0. Results focus on net drag reduction achieved, cavity flow-field effects, perforation effects in vertical cavity walls, cavity scale effects, mesh refinement issues, and the stability of the solutions. Skin friction drag was eliminated over micro-cavity regions for all configurations tested. Drag in these regions was due to pressure effects on vertical walls and exhibited a linear increase with downstream distance. Drag reductions as high as 18-20% (compared to a reference flat plate section) were obtained for 52-cavity geometries at Mach 2.0 and Mach 3.0 downstream of the 10 cm and 1 m flat plates, respectively. Perforation of the cavity walls showed no effect on net drag reduction for these cases. Stability issues were observed when using a fine grid mesh for the Mach 2.0 case, with significant oscillations seen in the drag. A parametric investigation in which cavity scale, number, and wall configuration were varied was also performed for two free-stream Mach numbers of 1.2 and 3.0. Drag reductions between 18-40% were seen for these cases. It is shown that drag reduction was reduced with increasing cavity length and that the steadiness of the solution increases with the number of vertical cavity walls present"--Abstract, page iii.

Book excerpt: An experimental study of open cavity flow has been made in a high Reynolds number, Mach 5 turbulent boundary layer. The majority of measurements made were of fluctuating wall pressures. The objectives were: (1) examine how effective changes in front and rear wall geometry were at attenuating the pressure oscillations, (2) explore how impingement of a shock wave (variable strength and position) the cavity flow, and (3) how stores (different geometries and positions) affected the cavity flow. In addition, techniques which were judged effective at attenuating pressure oscillations for the empty cavity were used with shock impingement and with stores in order to explore their effectiveness under perturbed flow conditions. The results show that vented and slotted walls, and spoilers are ineffective. A 3-D rear wall (swept in both planes and symmetric about the center line) attenuated the strongest oscillations by factors of up to 7 compared to the baseline rectangular cavity. Regardless of shock impingement position, shock strength, store position, store dimensions, store to cavity volume ratio and asymmetric store arrangement the cavity oscillation frequencies remain essentially unchanged. Based on the mean and rms Pressure distributions (whose magnitude varies substantially but whose basic shape does not change significantly) and surface flow patterns it appears that the essential flow structure also remains largely unchanged. These similarities suggest that control techniques developed for the empty cavity flow should be effective with shock impingement or store release. Tests using two passive control rear walls in perturbed cavity flow support this conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of supersonic cavity flows is of interest both from fundamental fluid dynamics and practical perspectives. The complex nature of this flowfield, consisting of compressible shear layers, compression/expansion waves, and fluid-acoustic interactions, makes it a rich problem to study. A detailed experimental study of supersonic flow (M=1.5 to 2) over a range of three-dimensional rectangular cavities (L/D=1 to 5.2) was conducted. The measurements included unsteady surface pressure measurements, particle image velocimetry, and flow visualization using shadowgraph and schlieren. Large-scale structures in the shear layer and a large recirculation zone in the cavity was observed. Spatial and temporal mode switching was also observed, the nature being different for short and long cavities. The shear layer characteristics of the two cavities are very different in term of curvature and growth. Supersonic microjets were used at the leading edge of the cavities to suppress the resonance in the flow. With a minimal mass flux (0.15%), the activation of microjets led to a large reduction in cavity tones (20 dB) and overall sound pressure levels (9dB). In addition, the microjet injection enhanced the shear layer mixing and reduced the velocity fluctuation in the cavities. The significant reductions together with the low mass flux requirements make this a potentially viable technique for full-scale, practical applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scramjet engines are a type of jet engine and rely on the combustion of fuel and an oxidizer to produce thrust. While scramjets are conceptually simple, actual implementation is limited by extreme technical challenges. Hypersonic flight within the atmosphere generates immense drag, and temperatures found on the aircraft and within the engine can be much greater than that of the surrounding air. Maintaining combustion in the supersonic flow presents additional challenges, as the fuel must be injected, mixed, ignited, and burned within milliseconds. Fuel mixing, along with the configuration and positioning of the injectors and the boundary conditions, play a key role in combustion efficiency. Scramjets: Fuel Mixing and Injection Systems discusses how fuel mixing efficiency and the advantage of injection systems can enhance the performance of the scramjets. The book begins with the introduction of the supersonic combustion chamber and explains the main parameters on the mixing rate. The configuration of scramjets is then introduced with special emphasis on the main effective parameters on the mixing of fuel inside the scramjets. In addition, basic concepts and principles on the mixing rate and fuel distribution within scramjets are presented. Main effective parameters such as range of fuel concentration for the efficient combustion, pressure of fuel jet and various arrangement of jet injections are also explained. This book is for aeronautical and mechanical engineers as well as those working in supersonic combustion who need to know the effects of compressibility on combustion, of shocks on mixing and on chemical reactions, and vorticity on the flame anchoring. Explains the main applicable approaches for enhancement of supersonic combustion engines and the new techniques of fuel injection Shows how the interaction of main air stream with fuel injections can develop the mixing inside the scramjets Presents results of numerical simulations and how they can be used for the development of the combustion engines

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Scramjets are supersonic combustion ramjets where there is no mechanical compressor to compress air for combustion. The technology behind engines flying at supersonic speeds has been explored since 1947. It has been in only recent years where the computational power is great enough to handle the challenges. One main challenge with engines is the problem of efficiency. The research conducted explores the background information of scramjets and significant flow field characteristics to optimize the turbulent mixing efficiency. A computational domain was chosen based on a study that revealed that adding dimpled surfaces upstream of a cavity flame holder would suppress pressure oscillations. Suppressing pressure oscillations causes less damage done to the structure of the scramjet engine and reduce the aeroacoustics generated. The research done intends to optimize the dimple diameter and dimple depth to increase mixing found in the cavity. Eight models were created by increasing or decreasing the dimple diameter from 20 mm and increasing the dimple depth from 6 mm. Each case was simulated at freestream velocities, 25 m/s, 35 m/s, 45 m/s, and 55m/s. The velocity contour and vectors showed that the L/D ratio of less than 10 followed the same characteristics of an open cavity where there are two main recirculation regions found in the cavity. Analyzing the pressure identified that the drag inside of a scramjet engine is less when there are dimpled surfaces. Turbulent eddy dissipation and turbulent eddy frequency confirmed that there were recirculation regions of larger eddies found inside the dimples. The skin friction coefficient revealed that adding dimples, increased flow separation in the cavity close to the trailing edge and adds flow separation or mixing at the dimples. To reduce drag and increase mixing in the scramjet engine case Dia20d10 was chosen. This case showed no apparent effects due to increased freestream velocity along the trailing edge of the cavity and increased mixing at the leading edge.
