First, we will give a general overview of the way in which ipa operates. In that discussion we will briefly describe each of the major subroutines of the system. Basically, these are the subroutines that are required to: (i) obtain an optimal solution to the continuous version of the integer programming problem. Gomory transformed the field of integer programming when he published a paper that described a cutting-plane algorithm for pure integer programs and announced that the method could be refined to give a finite algorithm for integer programming. In 2008, to commemorate the anniversary of this seminal paper, a special workshop celebrating fifty years of integer programming was held in Aussois, France, as part of the 12th Combinatorial Optimization Workshop. It contains reprints of key historical articles and written versions of survey lectures on six of the hottest topics in the field by distinguished members of the integer programming community. Useful for anyone in mathematics, computer science and operations research, this book exposes mathematical optimization, specifically integer programming and combinatorial optimization, to a broad audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper extends some results of Gomory on a group theoretic approach to linear integer programming. An algorithm for solving integer programming problems is presented, and the relation of this work to cuts and appropriate geometric interpretations are given. The theoretical basis for the algorithm establishes a characterization of integer solutions to linear programs by considering the Gomory column group associated with the optimal linear programming basis. It is shown that if an optimal integer solution exists, it can be obtained by finding the rth optimal solution to an optimization problem over elements in this Gomory group, for some finite r. A dynamic programming procedure for finding this rth optimal solution is given, and shown to be equivalent to finding an rth shortest route through a specially constructed network. A particular class of cutting planes is discussed. These cuts are shown to be parallel to a subset of Gomory cuts and at least as strong as the Gomory cuts. Specially structured integer programs are discussed with a view toward speeding computation. Included in this discussion is a specialization to zero-one variables. Some computational results are given. It is seen that computational efficiency depends crucially on the size of the absolute value of the determinant of the optimal linear programming basis. In general, the smaller this absolute value, the more efficient the algorithm. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integer Prograw~ing is one of the most fascinating and difficult areas in the field of Mathematical Optimization. Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Relaxation Methods for Pure and Mixed Integer Programming Problems The usefulness of group theoretic methods in solving integer programming (IP) problems is extended by procedures for controlling the size of the groups. The main procedure given shows how an optimal linear programming basis can be altered to reduce the magnitude of its determinant thereby reducing the size of the group induced by the basis. An adoption of Bender's mixed IP algorithm is given which uses these methods. Some limited computational experience is given. Book excerpt: This monograph considers pure integer programming problems which concern packing, partitioning or covering. For this class of problems, an algorithmic framework using a duality approach is offered. Furthermore, the author proposes for the first time a general framework for both packing and covering problems characterizing the convex whole of integer solutions.

Book excerpt: Integer Programming: Theory, Applications, and Computations provides information pertinent to the theory, applications, and computations of integer programming. This book presents the computational advantages of the various techniques of integer programming. Organized into eight chapters, this book begins with an overview of the general categorization of integer applications and explains the three fundamental techniques of integer programming. This text then explores the concept of implicit enumeration, which is general in a sense that it is applicable to any well-defined binary program. Other chapters consider the branch-and-bound methods, the cutting-plane method, and its closely related asymptotic problem. This book discusses as well several specialized algorithms for certain well-known integer models and provides an alternative approach to the solution of the integer problem. The final chapter deals with a number of observations about the formulations and executions of integer programming models. This book is a valuable resource for industrial engineers and research workers.

The algorithm combines group theoretic methods for finding integer solutions to systems of linear equations under the control of heuristic supervisory procedures. The latter pre-structure the overall problem and guide the search for an optimal solution by organizing subproblems and selecting the appropriate analytical methods to apply to them. Here there is a decided emphasis on the diagnostic facility of the supervisor in order that the various analytic methods may be adapted to the overall problem and to the particular subproblems encountered. Throughout the paper, the variety and flexibility of the group theoretic methods are emphasized, as well as the potential of heuristic selection and control of these methods. (Author).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Group Theoretic Branch and Bound Algorithm: For the Zero-One Integer Programming A more precise definition of an optimal correction is given ininduced correction and the resulting LP basic variables constitute a feasible solution to the integer programming problem, then this solution is optimalo Sufficient conditions can be given on when an unconstrained shortest route path can be guaranteed to produce a feasible and thus optimal integer solution. As discussed in the class of problems for which the unconstrained shortest route solution will yield the optimal integer solution can be described qualitatively as steady - state If b is the vector of constants in the integer programming problem, steady state means that the optimal LP solution B-lb is sufficiently large in each component to remain non negative after the correction from the unconstrained shortest route or group problem is obtained. This book was released on 1968 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main result of this paper is a group theoretic algorithm (GTIP2) for the integer programming problem. This algorithm is an extension of an algorithm from an earlier paper (part I). The algorithm in part I solves a group optimization problem derived from a given integer programming problem. The optimal solution to the group problem thereby obtained is an optimal solution to the integer programming problem if it is feasible. Unfortunately, an optimal solution to the group problem may yield an infeasible integer solution. The algorithm GTIP2 of this paper is an extension of the method of part I when it fails. In particular, GTIP2 employs a search procedure to find an optimal solution to the integer programming problem. The extent of the search is bounded by procedures derived from a variety of relevant group problems which are solved by the algorithm of part I. There is a discussion of the class of problems for which GTIP2 is primarily intended and the relationship of GTIP2 to other algorithms is indicated. A numerical example and some partial computational results are included. (Author).
