Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.0 2 The attention then turned to the problem of "Body separation", i.e. separation of occluding bodies in a scene (See [Guzman), [Falk), and [Waltz)). Grape ([Grape)) combined the separation of bodies with recognition, by removing parts of the scene recognized as belonging to a known body. All of these techniques were designed to work with polyhedral objects only, and extensively use the properties of edges and vertices. Though some impressive results have been reported ([Waltz], [Grape)), and perhaps some useful abstractions can be made, the specific techniques used fail to generalize to a wider class of objects. Among previous work on curved objects, B.K.P. Horn ([Horn)) presented techniques for extracting three dimensional depth data from a TV image, using reflection characteristics of the surface. Krakauer ([Krakauer]) represented objects by connections of brightness contours. Ambler et al ([Ambler)) describe experiments with simple shapes, including curved objects, using relations within a two-dimensional image. However, none of these efforts really addresses the problem of "shape" representation and description. Work on outdoor scene analysis is also concerned with non-polyhedral objects ([Bajcsy], [Yakimovsky]), but again no attention has been paid to shape analysis.

Book Synopsis Computational Methods for Three-Dimensional Microscopy Reconstruction by : Gabor T. Herman
Download or read book Computational Methods for Three-Dimensional Microscopy Reconstruction written by Gabor T. Herman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approaches to the recovery of three-dimensional information on a biological object, which are often formulated or implemented initially in an intuitive way, are concisely described here based on physical models of the object and the image-formation process. Both three-dimensional electron microscopy and X-ray tomography can be captured in the same mathematical framework, leading to closely-related computational approaches, but the methodologies differ in detail and hence pose different challenges. The editors of this volume, Gabor T. Herman and Joachim Frank, are experts in the respective methodologies and present research at the forefront of biological imaging and structural biology. Computational Methods for Three-Dimensional Microscopy Reconstruction will serve as a useful resource for scholars interested in the development of computational methods for structural biology and cell biology, particularly in the area of 3D imaging and modeling.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. K. TURNER Department of Geology and Geological Engineering Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado 80401 USA Geology deals with three-dimensional data. Geoscientists are concerned with three dimensional spatial observations, measurements, and explanations of a great variety of phenomena. The representation of three-dimensional data has always been a problem. Prior to computers, graphical displays involved specialized maps, cross-sections, fence diagrams, and geometrical constructions such as stereonets. All were designed to portray three-dimensional relationships on two-dimensional paper products, and all were time consuming to develop. Until recently, computers were of little assistance to three-dimensional data handling and representation problems. Memory was too expensive to handle the huge amounts of data required by three-dimensional assessments; computational speeds were too slow to perform the necessary calculations within a reasonable time; and graphical displays had too Iowa resolution or were much too expensive to produce useful visualizations. Much experience was gained with two-dimensional geographic information systems (GIS), which were applied to many land-use management and resource assessment problems. The two-dimensional GIS field matured rapidly in the late 1980's and became widely accepted. The advent of the modern computer workstation, with its enhanced memory and graphical capabilities at ever more affordable prices, has largely overcome these earlier constraints.
Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Three-dimensional Digital Image Processing by : Junichiro Toriwaki

This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed description of the basics of three-dimensional digital image processing. A 3D digital image (abbreviated as “3D image” below) is a digitalized representation of a 3D object or an entire 3D space, stored in a computer as a 3D array. Whereas normal digital image processing is concerned with screens that are a collection of square shapes called “pixels” and their corresponding density levels, the “image plane” in three dimensions is represented by a division into cubical graphical elements (called “voxels”) that represent corresponding density levels. Inthecontextofimageprocessing,in manycases3Dimageprocessingwill refer to the input of multiple 2D images and performing processing in order to understand the 3D space (or “scene”) that they depict. This is a result of research into how to use input from image sensors such as television cameras as a basis for learning about a 3D scene, thereby replicating the sense of vision for humans or intelligent robots, and this has been the central problem in image processing research since the 1970s. However, a completely di?erent type of image with its own new problems, the 3D digital image discussed in this book, rapidly took prominence in the 1980s, particularly in the ?eld of medical imaging. These were recordings of human bodies obtained through computed (or “computerized”) tomography (CT),imagesthatrecordednotonlytheexternal, visiblesurfaceofthesubject but also, to some degree of resolution, its internal structure. This was a type of image that no one had experienced before.

Download or read book Three-Dimensional Model Analysis and Processing written by Faxin Yu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing popularization of the Internet, together with the rapid development of 3D scanning technologies and modeling tools, 3D model databases have become more and more common in fields such as biology, chemistry, archaeology and geography. People can distribute their own 3D works over the Internet, search and download 3D model data, and also carry out electronic trade over the Internet. However, some serious issues are related to this as follows: (1) How to efficiently transmit and store huge 3D model data with limited bandwidth and storage capacity; (2) How to prevent 3D works from being pirated and tampered with; (3) How to search for the desired 3D models in huge multimedia databases. This book is devoted to partially solving the above issues. Compression is useful because it helps reduce the consumption of expensive resources, such as hard disk space and transmission bandwidth. On the downside, compressed data must be decompressed to be used, and this extra processing may be detrimental to some applications. 3D polygonal mesh (with geometry, color, normal vector and texture coordinate information), as a common surface representation, is now heavily used in various multimedia applications such as computer games, animations and simulation applications. To maintain a convincing level of realism, many applications require highly detailed mesh models. However, such complex models demand broad network bandwidth and much storage capacity to transmit and store. To address these problems, 3D mesh compression is essential for reducing the size of 3D model representation.

Overall, the book covers three main areas: ● 3D imaging, including passive 3D imaging, active triangulation 3D imaging, active time-of-flight 3D imaging, consumer RGB-D cameras, and 3D data representation and visualisation; ● 3D shape analysis, including local descriptors, registration, matching, 3D morphable models, and deep learning on 3D datasets; and ● 3D applications, including 3D face recognition, cultural heritage and 3D phenotyping of plants. 3D computer vision is a rapidly advancing area in computer science. There are many real-world applications that demand high-performance 3D imaging and analysis and, as a result, many new techniques and commercial products have been developed. However, many challenges remain on how to analyse the captured data in a way that is sufficiently fast, robust and accurate for the application. Such challenges include metrology, semantic segmentation, classification and recognition. Thus, 3D imaging, analysis and their applications remain a highly-active research field that will continue to attract intensive attention from the research community with the ultimate goal of fully automating the 3D data capture, analysis and inference pipeline.
