Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program is described which forms and solves normal equations for station position and bias parameters. The satellite observations are obtained from the geoceiver, a lightweight Doppler tracking equipment. The orbit of the satellite is held fixed in the computations. A single pass solution for longitude and latitude as well as a three-dimensional solution for longitude, latitude, and height is computed. The program also includes segments for filtering the data, correcting for ionospheric and tropospheric refraction, and navigating the station in the plane of the satellite velocity vector and station position.

Book excerpt: Doppler observations of artificial satellites made by mobile receivers have been used to determine the positions of navigation beacons and other isolated sites since 1963. Over this period, improvements in the accuracy of the satellite net of 15 to 20 base stations have yielded an improvement in the computed positions of the isolated sites from 100m to an estimated 1m. This report compares positions of the base stations computed from observations made over the past twelve years using recent geodetic parameters and methods to determine if systematic variations exist in computed positions.

Residuals of satellite observations for 1970 were analyzed using the new coordinates to determine mean and standard errors for five days of observations of components of station position versus station, time of day; and elevation angle. The accuracy of the determination of a component of station position is about 4 meters at moderate and high elevation angles. But since more satellite passes occur at lower elevation angles, the accuracy of determination of a component of position based on five days of observation of one satellite is only about 2 meters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to bringing accuracy to measurement, updated and supplemented Adjustment Computations is the classic textbook for spatial information analysis and adjustment computations, providing clear, easy-to-understand instruction backed by real-world practicality. From the basic terms and fundamentals of errors to specific adjustment computations and spatial information analysis, this book covers the methodologies and tools that bring accuracy to surveying, GNSS, GIS, and other spatial technologies. Broad in scope yet rich in detail, the discussion avoids overly-complex theory in favor of practical techniques for students and professionals. This new sixth edition has been updated to align with the latest developments in this rapidly expanding field, and includes new video lessons and updated problems, including worked problems in STATS, MATRIX, ADJUST, and MathCAD. All measurement produces some amount of error; whether from human mistakes, instrumentation inaccuracy, or environmental features, these errors must be accounted and adjusted for when accuracy is critical. This book describes how errors are identified, analyzed, measured, and corrected, with a focus on least squares adjustment—the most rigorous methodology available. Apply industry-standard methodologies to error analysis and adjustment Translate your skills to the real-world with instruction focused on the practical Master the fundamentals as well as specific computations and analysis Strengthen your understanding of critical topics on the Fundamentals in Surveying Licensing Exam As spatial technologies expand in both use and capability, so does our need for professionals who understand how to check and adjust for errors in spatial data. Conceptual knowledge is one thing, but practical skills are what counts when accuracy is at stake; Adjustment Computations provides the real-world training you need to identify, analyze, and correct for potentially crucial errors.

The book is organized to allow readers to progress at a fast pace, from the fundamentals of RF positioning, to the use of advanced tools such as artificial intelligence algorithms and application development environments. The first part of the book covers the fundamentals of RF localization. The second part addresses the application of those fundamentals in several types of wireless networks and technologies as Cellular Networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Sensor Networks, Ultra Wide Band, and Global Navigation Satellite Systems. The third part brings several tools to allow rapid development of positioning applications for mobile devices, as well as to support implementation, usage, deployment, and research of localization algorithms. This book presents numerous MATLAB examples, accompanied by the corresponding MATLAB code, made available at the book website. The MATLAB code to most figures is also provided, as well as databases of measurements collected during experiments conducted both in cellular and Wi-Fi networks. The book also is accompanied by Android source codes of the example apps developed in Chapter 10.

Book excerpt: Uncertainties in GPS Positioning: A Mathematical Discourse describes the calculations performed by a GPS receiver and the problems associated with ensuring that the derived location is a close match to the actual location. Inaccuracies in calculating a location can have serious repercussions, so this book is a timely source for information on this rapidly evolving technology. - Covers how a GPS receiver works and how the earth is modeled so position data can be calculated - Discusses the different signals and clock speeds of the satellites, the receivers, and sources of inaccuracy - Examines how the errors are distributed in the data and provides examples

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instantaneous position of the earth's spin axis with respect to the crust has been computed daily since 1969 on the basis of Doppler satellite observations. Improved sets of observing station coordinates and gravity field coefficients obtained in 1970 were used through 1971 yielding pole positions with a standard error of about 0.5 meters for the mean of five days of data. However, for some time periods, a bias of about 0.5 meters also exists between the Doppler pole positions and positions reported by the Bureau International de L'Heure (BIH) based on astronomical data. Spot checks of latitude residuals and pole positions based on recomputed satellite orbits for 1968 and 1969 yielded results consistent with recent data, indicating significant compensation of station coordinate errors by changes in orbit constants.
