Book Synopsis Proofs and Computations by : Helmut Schwichtenberg
Download or read book Proofs and Computations written by Helmut Schwichtenberg and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by the question, 'What is the computational content of a (formal) proof?', this book studies fundamental interactions between proof theory and computability. It provides a unique self-contained text for advanced students and researchers in mathematical logic and computer science. Part I covers basic proof theory, computability and Gödel's theorems. Part II studies and classifies provable recursion in classical systems, from fragments of Peano arithmetic up to Π11–CA0. Ordinal analysis and the (Schwichtenberg–Wainer) subrecursive hierarchies play a central role and are used in proving the 'modified finite Ramsey' and 'extended Kruskal' independence results for PA and Π11–CA0. Part III develops the theoretical underpinnings of the first author's proof assistant MINLOG. Three chapters cover higher-type computability via information systems, a constructive theory TCF of computable functionals, realizability, Dialectica interpretation, computationally significant quantifiers and connectives and polytime complexity in a two-sorted, higher-type arithmetic with linear logic.

Book Synopsis An Introduction to Proof Theory by : Paolo Mancosu
Download or read book An Introduction to Proof Theory written by Paolo Mancosu and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to Proof Theory provides an accessible introduction to the theory of proofs, with details of proofs worked out and examples and exercises to aid the reader's understanding. It also serves as a companion to reading the original pathbreaking articles by Gerhard Gentzen. The first half covers topics in structural proof theory, including the Gödel-Gentzen translation of classical into intuitionistic logic (and arithmetic), natural deduction and the normalization theorems (for both NJ and NK), the sequent calculus, including cut-elimination and mid-sequent theorems, and various applications of these results. The second half examines ordinal proof theory, specifically Gentzen's consistency proof for first-order Peano Arithmetic. The theory of ordinal notations and other elements of ordinal theory are developed from scratch, and no knowledge of set theory is presumed. The proof methods needed to establish proof-theoretic results, especially proof by induction, are introduced in stages throughout the text. Mancosu, Galvan, and Zach's introduction will provide a solid foundation for those looking to understand this central area of mathematical logic and the philosophy of mathematics.
Book Synopsis Handbook of Proof Theory by : S.R. Buss
Download or read book Handbook of Proof Theory written by S.R. Buss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1998-07-09 with total page 823 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains articles covering a broad spectrum of proof theory, with an emphasis on its mathematical aspects. The articles should not only be interesting to specialists of proof theory, but should also be accessible to a diverse audience, including logicians, mathematicians, computer scientists and philosophers. Many of the central topics of proof theory have been included in a self-contained expository of articles, covered in great detail and depth. The chapters are arranged so that the two introductory articles come first; these are then followed by articles from core classical areas of proof theory; the handbook concludes with articles that deal with topics closely related to computer science.
Book Synopsis A Proof Theory for Description Logics by : Alexandre Rademaker
Download or read book A Proof Theory for Description Logics written by Alexandre Rademaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-17 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description Logics (DLs) is a family of formalisms used to represent knowledge of a domain. They are equipped with a formal logic-based semantics. Knowledge representation systems based on description logics provide various inference capabilities that deduce implicit knowledge from the explicitly represented knowledge. A Proof Theory for Description Logics introduces Sequent Calculi and Natural Deduction for some DLs (ALC, ALCQ). Cut-elimination and Normalization are proved for the calculi. The author argues that such systems can improve the extraction of computational content from DLs proofs for explanation purposes.

Book Synopsis Concepts of Proof in Mathematics, Philosophy, and Computer Science by : Dieter Probst
Download or read book Concepts of Proof in Mathematics, Philosophy, and Computer Science written by Dieter Probst and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proof is a successful demonstration that a conclusion necessarily follows by logical reasoning from axioms which are considered evident for the given context and agreed upon by the community. It is this concept that sets mathematics apart from other disciplines and distinguishes it as the prototype of a deductive science. Proofs thus are utterly relevant for research, teaching and communication in mathematics and of particular interest for the philosophy of mathematics. In computer science, moreover, proofs have proved to be a rich source for already certified algorithms. This book provides the reader with a collection of articles covering relevant current research topics circled around the concept 'proof'. It tries to give due consideration to the depth and breadth of the subject by discussing its philosophical and methodological aspects, addressing foundational issues induced by Hilbert's Programme and the benefits of the arising formal notions of proof, without neglecting reasoning in natural language proofs and applications in computer science such as program extraction.

Book Synopsis The Semantics and Proof Theory of the Logic of Bunched Implications by : David J. Pym
Download or read book The Semantics and Proof Theory of the Logic of Bunched Implications written by David J. Pym and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a monograph about logic. Specifically, it presents the mathe matical theory of the logic of bunched implications, BI: I consider Bl's proof theory, model theory and computation theory. However, the mono graph is also about informatics in a sense which I explain. Specifically, it is about mathematical models of resources and logics for reasoning about resources. I begin with an introduction which presents my (background) view of logic from the point of view of informatics, paying particular attention to three logical topics which have arisen from the development of logic within informatics: • Resources as a basis for semantics; • Proof-search as a basis for reasoning; and • The theory of representation of object-logics in a meta-logic. The ensuing development represents a logical theory which draws upon the mathematical, philosophical and computational aspects of logic. Part I presents the logical theory of propositional BI, together with a computational interpretation. Part II presents a corresponding devel opment for predicate BI. In both parts, I develop proof-, model- and type-theoretic analyses. I also provide semantically-motivated compu tational perspectives, so beginning a mathematical theory of resources. I have not included any analysis, beyond conjecture, of properties such as decidability, finite models, games or complexity. I prefer to leave these matters to other occasions, perhaps in broader contexts.
Book Synopsis Basic Proof Theory by : A. S. Troelstra
Download or read book Basic Proof Theory written by A. S. Troelstra and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-27 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to the basic ideas of structural proof theory contains a thorough discussion and comparison of various types of formalization of first-order logic. Examples are given of several areas of application, namely: the metamathematics of pure first-order logic (intuitionistic as well as classical); the theory of logic programming; category theory; modal logic; linear logic; first-order arithmetic and second-order logic. In each case the aim is to illustrate the methods in relatively simple situations and then apply them elsewhere in much more complex settings. There are numerous exercises throughout the text. In general, the only prerequisite is a standard course in first-order logic, making the book ideal for graduate students and beginning researchers in mathematical logic, theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. For the new edition, many sections have been rewritten to improve clarity, new sections have been added on cut elimination, and solutions to selected exercises have been included.
Book Synopsis Applied Proof Theory: Proof Interpretations and their Use in Mathematics by : Ulrich Kohlenbach

This book was released on 2008-05-23 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first treatment in book format of proof-theoretic transformations - known as proof interpretations - that focuses on applications to ordinary mathematics. It covers both the necessary logical machinery behind the proof interpretations that are used in recent applications as well as – via extended case studies – carrying out some of these applications in full detail. This subject has historical roots in the 1950s. This book for the first time tells the whole story.

Book Synopsis Proof Theory in Computer Science by : Reinhard Kahle
Download or read book Proof Theory in Computer Science written by Reinhard Kahle and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proof theory has long been established as a basic discipline of mathematical logic. It has recently become increasingly relevant to computer science. The - ductive apparatus provided by proof theory has proved useful for metatheoretical purposes as well as for practical applications. Thus it seemed to us most natural to bring researchers together to assess both the role proof theory already plays in computer science and the role it might play in the future. The form of a Dagstuhl seminar is most suitable for purposes like this, as Schloß Dagstuhl provides a very convenient and stimulating environment to - scuss new ideas and developments. To accompany the conference with a proc- dings volume appeared to us equally appropriate. Such a volume not only ?xes basic results of the subject and makes them available to a broader audience, but also signals to the scienti?c community that Proof Theory in Computer Science (PTCS) is a major research branch within the wider ?eld of logic in computer science.
Book Synopsis A Proof Theory for General Unification by : W. Snyder
Download or read book A Proof Theory for General Unification written by W. Snyder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph we study two generalizations of standard unification, E-unification and higher-order unification, using an abstract approach orig inated by Herbrand and developed in the case of standard first-order unifi cation by Martelli and Montanari. The formalism presents the unification computation as a set of non-deterministic transformation rules for con verting a set of equations to be unified into an explicit representation of a unifier (if such exists). This provides an abstract and mathematically elegant means of analysing the properties of unification in various settings by providing a clean separation of the logical issues from the specification of procedural information, and amounts to a set of 'inference rules' for unification, hence the title of this book. We derive the set of transformations for general E-unification and higher order unification from an analysis of the sense in which terms are 'the same' after application of a unifying substitution. In both cases, this results in a simple extension of the set of basic transformations given by Herbrand Martelli-Montanari for standard unification, and shows clearly the basic relationships of the fundamental operations necessary in each case, and thus the underlying structure of the most important classes of term unifi cation problems.
Book Synopsis Well-Quasi Orders in Computation, Logic, Language and Reasoning by : Peter M. Schuster
Download or read book Well-Quasi Orders in Computation, Logic, Language and Reasoning written by Peter M. Schuster and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book bridges the gaps between logic, mathematics and computer science by delving into the theory of well-quasi orders, also known as wqos. This highly active branch of combinatorics is deeply rooted in and between many fields of mathematics and logic, including proof theory, commutative algebra, braid groups, graph theory, analytic combinatorics, theory of relations, reverse mathematics and subrecursive hierarchies. As a unifying concept for slick finiteness or termination proofs, wqos have been rediscovered in diverse contexts, and proven to be extremely useful in computer science. The book introduces readers to the many facets of, and recent developments in, wqos through chapters contributed by scholars from various fields. As such, it offers a valuable asset for logicians, mathematicians and computer scientists, as well as scholars and students.
