Die Erkennung kleinster Fehler ist essentiell, wobei die Untersuchungsdauer, die Kosten und die Automatisierung der Prüfung an Bedeutung gewinnen. Die Zerstörungsfreie Prüfung (ZfP) bietet die Möglichkeit, das Innere eines Werkstückes zu charakterisieren, ohne es zu permanent zu beeinflussen. Ein kostengünstiges und flexibles bildgebendes Verfahren ist die Ultraschallprüfung. Dabei werden Ultraschallpulse in den Prüfkörper eingebracht, welche an Fehlerstellen wie z.B. Rissen oder Lufteinschlüssen aufgrund von akustischen Impedanzunterschieden zur Ausbildung von Echos führen. Die Echoamplitude hängt von der vom Ultraschallwandler eingestrahlten Energiemenge ab. Große Wandlergruppen (Arrays) bieten die Möglichkeit, mehr Energie in den Prüfling einzubringen. Damit geht die Verbesserung des Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis (SNR) und eine höhere Wahrscheinlichkeit bei der Erkennung kleinster Fehler einher. Zudem ermöglichen Arrays die Strahlfokussierung (beamforming) und die Strahlschwenkung (beam steering). Das Beamforming wird in kommerziellen Ultraschall-Prüfgeräten im digitalen Teil der Signalverarbeitung durchgeführt. Dafür werden schnelle, hochauflösende Analog-Digital-Wandler und eine leistungsfähige Signalverarbeitung benötigt, was zu steigender Hardwarekomplexität führt und die Leistungsfähigkeit der Verfahren einschränkt. Diese Restriktionen können durch Compressed Sensing umgangen werden. CS verfolgt die Idee direkt eine komprimierte Version von Signalen zu messen. Diese Masterarbeit untersucht die Anwendbarkeit von CS in mehrkanaligen Hardware-Architekturen für Ultraschallprüfung-ZfP. Aus Prinzipien und Umsetzungen von CS in der drahtlosen Kommunikation und RADAR wird eine Hardwarearchitektur abgeleitet. Es wird ein Framework in MATLAB implementiert. und Simulationen zur Verifizierung der Funktionsweise sowie zur Analyse der Performance des Konzeptes durchgeführt. Die Simulationen zeigen, dass drei implementierte Arten von Kompressionsmatrizen eine Datenreduktion um Faktor 20 mit nur vernachlässigbaren Einbußen der Rekonstruktionsqualität bei moderaten SNRs erreichen. Abschließend werden mögliche Verbesserungen und die zum Aufbau eines Prototypen notwendigen Schritte diskutiert.

Ultrasound is generated from mechanical vibrations and then propagates through the medium. Ultrasonic devices can make use of the ultrasound in both aspects, vibrations and propagations, to perform inspections of the objects. To this end, two devices were developed in this research, each pertaining to NDT of the objects. The first device is the vibro-tactile sensor which aims to estimate the elastic modules of soft materials with minimally invasive technique. Inspired by load sensitivity studies in the high-power ultrasonic applications, vibration characteristics in resonance were utilized to perform the inspection. Only a minimal force to ensure contact with the object surface needs to be applied for a vibro-tactile sensor to perform inspection of the object; hence, it can be used for in-vivo measurement of the soft materials' elastic moduli without causing severe surface deformation. The design and analysis of the device were carried out using the electro-mechanical analogy to address the electro-mechanical nature of piezoelectric devices. The designed vibro-tactile sensor resonates at ~40 kHz and can be applied to differentiate the elastic modulus of isotropic soft samples with a range from 10 kPa to 70 kPa. The second device developed is a field-programmable development platform for ultrasonic pulse-echo testing. Ultrasonic testing, utilizing sound wave propagation, is a widely used technique in the industry. The commercially available equipment for industrial NDT is highly dependent on the competence of the inspector and rarely provides the access to raw data. For successful transition from traditional labor-intensive manufacturing to the next generation "smart factory" where intelligent machines replace human labor, inspection equipment with automated in-line data collection and processing capability is highly needed. To this end, a flexible platform which provides the access to raw data for algorithm development and implementation should be established. Therefore, an affordable, versatile, and researcher-friendly development platform based on field-programmable gate array (FPGA) was developed in the research. Both hardware and software development tools and procedures were discussed. In the lab experiment, the developed prototype exhibited its competence in NDT applications and successfully carried out hardware-based auto-detection algorithm for mm-level defects on steel and aluminum specimens. Comparisons with commercial systems were provided to guide future development.

This book is about using ultrasound in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) inspections. Ultrasonic NDE uses high-frequency acoustic/elastic waves to evaluate components without affecting their integrity or performance. This technique is commonly used in industry (particularly in aerospace and nuclear power) to inspect safety-critical parts for flaws during in-service use. Other important uses of ultrasonic NDE involve process control functions during manufacturing and fundamental materials characterization studies. It is not difficult to set up an ultrasonic NDE measurement system to launch waves into a component and monitor the waves received from defects, such as cracks, even when those defects are deep within the component. It is difficult however to interpret quantitatively the signals received in such an ultrasonic NDE measurement process. For example based on the ultrasonic signal received from a crack, what is the size, shape, and orientation of the crack producing the signal? Answering such questions requires evaluation procedures based on a detailed knowledge of the physics of the entire ultrasonic measurement process. One approach to obtaining such knowledge is to couple quantitative experiments closely with detailed models of the entire ultrasonic measurement system itself. We refer to such models here as ultrasonic NDE measurement models. In other areas of engineering, models have revolutionized how engineering is practiced. A classic example is the impact of the finite-element method on elastic stress analysis.
