Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The determinations of modulus of elasticity and flexural and splitting tensile strengths often involve complicated testing procedures compared to compressive strength testing. These properties can be estimated using existing relationships between them and compressive strength values. However, most of the existing correlations have been derived for mixtures with compressive strengths less than 80 MPa and may not be applicable to mixtures of greater strengths. This paper compares compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and modulus of elasticity values to similar results predicted by national codes and alternatives suggested by various researchers. Commercially available and laboratory-prepared concrete mixtures with 28-d compressive strengths of 45 to 110 MPa were tested.

Book excerpt: This open access book explores the strategic importance and advantages of adopting multidisciplinary and multiscalar approaches of inquiry and intervention with respect to the built environment, based on principles of sustainability and circular economy strategies. A series of key challenges are considered in depth from a multidisciplinary perspective, spanning engineering, architecture, and regional and urban economics. These challenges include strategies to relaunch socioeconomic development through regenerative processes, the regeneration of urban spaces from the perspective of resilience, the development and deployment of innovative products and processes in the construction sector in order to comply more fully with the principles of sustainability and circularity, and the development of multiscale approaches to enhance the performance of both the existing building stock and new buildings. The book offers a rich selection of conceptual, empirical, methodological, technical, and case study/project-based research. It will be of value for all who have an interest in regeneration of the built environment from a circular economy perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concrete made using mineral cements, the raw materials which on earth are practically endless, is known as one of the oldest building materials and during the last decades of the twentieth century has become a dominant building material for general use. At the same time, the requirements of the quality of concrete and its performance properties, in particular compressive strength, durability, economical efficiency, and low negative impact of its manufacture on the environment have not yet been completely met. Bearing these requirements in mind, researchers and engineers worldwide are working on how to satisfy these requirements. This book has been written by researchers and experts in the field and provides the state of the art on recent progress achieved on the properties of concrete, including concrete in which industrial by-products are utilized. The book is dedicated to graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers in related fields.

Book excerpt: Based on the 1995 edition of the American Concrete Institute Building Code, this text explains the theory and practice of reinforced concrete design in a systematic and clear fashion, with an abundance of step-by-step worked examples, illustrations, and photographs. The focus is on preparing students to make the many judgment decisions required in reinforced concrete design, and reflects the author's experience as both a teacher of reinforced concrete design and as a member of various code committees. This edition provides new, revised and expanded coverage of the following topics: core testing and durability; shrinkage and creep; bases the maximum steel ratio and the value of the factor on Appendix B of ACI318-95; composite concrete beams; strut-and-tie models; dapped ends and T-beam flanges. It also expands the discussion of STMs and adds new examples in SI units.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical book from a highly experienced author presents clearly the means and methods for designing, producing and using high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete offers many benefits. Higher compressive strengths allow for a reduction in the cross-sectional dimensions of columns and walls in buildings. Its greater stiffness allows for increasing building heights while controlling sway and occupant comfort. Civil structures such as bridges have benefited from greater span lengths, shallower beam sections, wider girder spacing, and extended service life. Illustrated with real life examples, through documented case histories, High-Strength Concrete will be a valuable resource for contractors, producers, inspection agencies, as well as engineers and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When produced correctly, concrete can be extremely strong, with high load-bearing capacity and superior durability. Another noteworthy property is the relatively low amount of energy and resources consumed during production. Super-High-Strength High Performance Concrete brings together the results of a major research project by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Doctoral Foundation of the Ministry of Education of China. This ten-year project explored the properties, performance, and potential of super-high-strength high performance (SHSHP) concrete. With a view towards improved production that optimizes the strength and durability of concrete, the book presents a host of topics on the cutting edge of concrete research. These include: A new method for the specific strength analysis of the pozzolanic effect of active mineral admixtures Analysis of the strength composition of SHSHP concrete Optimization of raw materials and mix proportion parameters for strength and flowability Analysis of the mechanical properties, deformation, and durability of SHSHP concrete Methods for decreasing autogeneous shrinkage Testing methods for SHSHP concrete The book concludes with a consideration of the practical and economic benefits of these optimized concretes. A systematic study of the different aspects of this essential commodity as well as the future direction of concrete science and technology, this book is a valuable resource for material scientists and engineers engaged in developing better structures.

Book excerpt: In this study the DoE method was used in designing the oncrete mix for high-strength concrete. Three different mixes with water-cement ratios of 0.35, 0.39 and 0.43 were made. The hardened conccrete was tested for its compressive, tensile and flexural strengths. Rice husk ash and concensed silica fume were used as mineral admixtures and incorporated in the mix as partial cement replacement. The chemical admixture used was superplaticizer (Rheobuild 1000). The effect of these mineral and chemical admixtures on concrete strength were investigated. The experimental results showed that the DoE method can be used in designing the concrete mix for high-strength concrete. The strength of the hardened concrete tested in this study were in the range of 60 to 85 N/mm2. The rice husk ash was found to increase the concrete strength with the elvel of replacement as high as 30 percent. Similarly, condensed silica fume and superplasticizer also increase the sterngth of the hardeneed concrete. The average retio of 7-day to 28-day compressive strength obtained was 0-81. The average retios of tensile to compressive strength and tensile of flexural strength were 0.065 and 0.65, respectively. All the results obtained in this study were comparable with the results obtained by other researchers.

Book excerpt: The quality and testing of materials used in construction are covered by reference to the appropriate ASTM standard specifications. Welding of reinforcement is covered by reference to the appropriate AWS standard. Uses of the Code include adoption by reference in general building codes, and earlier editions have been widely used in this manner. The Code is written in a format that allows such reference without change to its language. Therefore, background details or suggestions for carrying out the requirements or intent of the Code portion cannot be included. The Commentary is provided for this purpose. Some of the considerations of the committee in developing the Code portion are discussed within the Commentary, with emphasis given to the explanation of new or revised provisions. Much of the research data referenced in preparing the Code is cited for the user desiring to study individual questions in greater detail. Other documents that provide suggestions for carrying out the requirements of the Code are also cited.
