Book excerpt: Composite materials are desired for automobile, aerospace, and other high-tech applications due to their impressive physical properties and resilience. The use of composite materials in vehicle structures could reduce the weight and thereby the fuel consumption of vehicles. Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) is extensively used in automobile industries such as front end panels, roof panels, deck lids, trunk front fender-hood assemblies, bumper beams, heater, and air conditioner housings, and other exterior and interior body components. To enhance the stiffness and light-weighting of the vehicles, overmolded structures can be utilized. These overmolded structures often have two or more materials integrated generally, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and natural fibers. This research aims to combine two high-performance constituents to create an overmolded composite capable of meeting performance criteria for a vehicle - high strength and high stiffness. To create the overmolded structures, two fiberglass SMC were chosen with vinyl ester and polyester resin system as the core. Two layers of ± 45° Textile grade carbon fiber (TCF) was used as overmolded material. The SMC was fabricated using hot compression molding process and overmolded composite was fabricated using a VARTM process with hot compression molding. Epoxy was used as an adhesive to bond the SMC and TCF. Non-destructive testing was performed on a representative panel before destructive testing to examine the bonding between the SMC and TCF. The overmolded composite was tested for mechanical characterization, bonding characterization and X-ray tomography was performed to check the orientation of the fibers in SMC. It was found that the bonding of overmolded composite was stronger than the SMC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, higher processing temperatures, more efficient engines at higher temperatures, and the use of a vacuum environment have led to the development of a number of important processing, fabrication, and industrial techniques, resulting in new material forms including: matrix composites, nano- and functionally graded structures, plastics, smart piezoelectric materials, shape memory alloys, intermetallics, ceramics, and fullerenes. The second edition of this encyclopedia covers the new materials that have been invented or modified in recent years and updates information on basic materials as well. Encyclopedia of Materials, Parts, and Finishes, Second Edition brings together in one concise volume the most up-to-date information on materials, forms and parts, finishes, and processes utilized in the industry. There is not a handbook currently on the market that incorporates as much materials information in one volume. The coverage of materials usage extends from the breadth of military and aerospace materials to commercial (aircraft, automotive, electronics) and basic materials (wood, rubber, etc.). Each entry provides thorough, straightforward definitions along with examples of corresponding materials, parts, or finishes. Like its predecessor, this encyclopedia will be an invaluable reference that belongs on the desk of every materials scientist and engineer.

Book excerpt: In this book, a new three-dimensional approach for the process simulation of SMC is developed. This approach takes into account both, the core layer that is dominated by the extensional viscosity and the thin lubrication layer. In order to transfer the information from the process to the structure simulation, a CAE chain is further developed. In addition, a new rheological tool is developed to analyze flow behavior experimentally and to provide the required material parameters.

This reference book on engineering plastics provides practical and comprehensive coverage on how the performance of plastics is characterized during design, property testing, and failure analysis. The fundamental structure and properties of plastics are reviewed for general reference, and detailed articles describe the important design factors, properties, and failure mechanisms of plastics. The effects of composition, processing, and structure are detailed in articles on the physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Other articles cover failure mechanisms such as: crazing and fracture; impact loading; fatigue failure; wear failures, moisture related failure; organic chemical related failure; photolytic degradation; and microbial degradation. Characterization of plastics in failure analysis is described with additional articles on analysis of structure, surface analysis, and fractography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are finding increasing number of applications due to their high weight-saving potential as well as unique characteristics, such as high strength-to-density ratio, fatigue resistance, high damping factor, and freedom from corrosion. While many textbooks are available on the mechanics of polymer matrix composites, few cover their processing. Processing of Polymer Matrix Composites fills this gap. The book focuses on the major manufacturing processes used for polymer matrix composites and describes process details, process parameters and their effects on properties and process-induced defects, and analytical and experimental methods used for understanding process conditions. The book describes fibers, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, and interface characteristics that are important from the standpoint of both design and processing. It also emphasizes the applications of process fundamentals for both continuous fiber and short fiber polymer matrix composites. In addition the book considers quality inspection methods, tooling, and manufacturing costs and environmental and safety issues.
