Book excerpt: Conservation laws arise from the modeling of physical processes through the following three steps: 1) The appropriate physical balance laws are derived for m-phy- t cal quantities, ul""'~ with u = (ul' ... ,u ) and u(x,t) defined m for x = (xl""'~) E RN (N = 1,2, or 3), t > 0 and with the values m u(x,t) lying in an open subset, G, of R , the state space. The state space G arises because physical quantities such as the density or total energy should always be positive; thus the values of u are often con strained to an open set G. 2) The flux functions appearing in these balance laws are idealized through prescribed nonlinear functions, F.(u), mapping G into J j = 1, ..• ,N while source terms are defined by S(u,x,t) with S a given smooth function of these arguments with values in Rm. In parti- lar, the detailed microscopic effects of diffusion and dissipation are ignored. 3) A generalized version of the principle of virtual work is applied (see Antman [1]). The formal result of applying the three steps (1)-(3) is that the m physical quantities u define a weak solution of an m x m system of conservation laws, o I + N(Wt'u + r W ·F.(u) + W·S(u,x,t))dxdt (1.1) R xR j=l Xj J for all W E C~(RN x R+), W(x,t) E Rm.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Summer Program on Nonlinear Conservation Laws and Applications held at the IMA on July 13--31, 2009. Hyperbolic conservation laws is a classical subject, which has experienced vigorous growth in recent years. The present collection provides a timely survey of the state of the art in this exciting field, and a comprehensive outlook on open problems. Contributions of more theoretical nature cover the following topics: global existence and uniqueness theory of one-dimensional systems, multidimensional conservation laws in several space variables and approximations of their solutions, mathematical analysis of fluid motion, stability and dynamics of viscous shock waves, singular limits for viscous systems, basic principles in the modeling of turbulent mixing, transonic flows past an obstacle and a fluid dynamic approach for isometric embedding in geometry, models of nonlinear elasticity, the Monge problem, and transport equations with rough coefficients. In addition, there are a number of papers devoted to applications. These include: models of blood flow, self-gravitating compressible fluids, granular flow, charge transport in fluids, and the modeling and control of traffic flow on networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the numerical analysis of compressible fluids in the spirit of the celebrated Lax equivalence theorem. The text is aimed at graduate students in mathematics and fluid dynamics, researchers in applied mathematics, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and engineers and physicists. The book contains original theoretical material based on a new approach to generalized solutions (dissipative or measure-valued solutions). The concept of a weak-strong uniqueness principle in the class of generalized solutions is used to prove the convergence of various numerical methods. The problem of oscillatory solutions is solved by an original adaptation of the method of K-convergence. An effective method of computing the Young measures is presented. Theoretical results are illustrated by a series of numerical experiments. Applications of these concepts are to be expected in other problems of fluid mechanics and related fields.

Book excerpt: This work is devoted to the theory and approximation of nonlinear hyper bolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors, and we shall make frequent references to Godlewski and Raviart (1991) (hereafter noted G. R. ), though the present volume can be read independently. This earlier publication, apart from a first chap ter, especially covered the scalar case. Thus, we shall detail here neither the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws nor their approximation in the one-dimensional case by finite-difference con servative schemes, both of which were treated in G. R. , but we shall mostly consider systems. The theory for systems is in fact much more difficult and not at all completed. This explains why we shall mainly concentrate on some theoretical aspects that are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem, with occasional insights into more sophisticated problems. The present book is divided into six chapters, including an introductory chapter. For the reader's convenience, we shall resume in this Introduction the notions that are necessary for a self-sufficient understanding of this book -the main definitions of hyperbolicity, weak solutions, and entropy present the practical examples that will be thoroughly developed in the following chapters, and recall the main results concerning the scalar case.

Book excerpt: Hyposonic fluid flows, characterized by a low Mach number, are mainly linked with geophysical and environmental fluid flows. In addition they are relevant to engineers because of their connection with aerodynamics. The books brings together insights derived from mathematically rigorous results and combines them with a number of realistic fluid flow situations. Asymptotic analytic solutions for the low-Mach number cases are developed to provide both insights into the underlying physics as well as benchmarks for numerical computations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this is book to give a detailed presentation of multicomponent flow models and to investigate the mathematical structure and properties of the resulting system of partial differential equations. These developments are also illustrated by simulating numerically a typical laminar flame. Our aim in the chapters is to treat the general situation of multicomponent flows, taking into account complex chemistry and detailed transport phe nomena. In this book, we have adopted an interdisciplinary approach that en compasses a physical, mathematical, and numerical point of view. In par ticular, the links between molecular models, macroscopic models, mathe matical structure, and mathematical properties are emphasized. We also often mention flame models since combustion is an excellent prototype of multicomponent flow. This book still does not pretend to be a complete survey of existing models and related mathematical results. In particular, many subjects like multi phase-flows , turbulence modeling, specific applications, porous me dia, biological models, or magneto-hydrodynamics are not covered. We rather emphasize the fundamental modeling of multicomponent gaseous flows and the qualitative properties of the resulting systems of partial dif ferential equations. Part of this book was taught at the post-graduate level at the Uni versity of Paris, the University of Versailles, and at Ecole Poly technique in 1998-1999 to students of applied mathematics.

Book excerpt: This book presents the theory of hyperbolic conservation laws from basic theory to the forefront of research. The text treats the theory of scalar conservation laws in one dimension in detail, showing the stability of the Cauchy problem using front tracking. The extension to multidimensional scalar conservation laws is obtained using dimensional splitting. The book includes detailed discussion of the recent proof of well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional hyperbolic conservation laws, and a chapter on traditional finite difference methods for hyperbolic conservation laws with error estimates and a section on measure valued solutions.

Book excerpt: Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an authoritative reference to the basic tools and concepts of complexity, systems theory, and dynamical systems from the perspective of pure and applied mathematics. Complex systems are systems that comprise many interacting parts with the ability to generate a new quality of collective behavior through self-organization, e.g. the spontaneous formation of temporal, spatial or functional structures. These systems are often characterized by extreme sensitivity to initial conditions as well as emergent behavior that are not readily predictable or even completely deterministic. The more than 100 entries in this wide-ranging, single source work provide a comprehensive explication of the theory and applications of mathematical complexity, covering ergodic theory, fractals and multifractals, dynamical systems, perturbation theory, solitons, systems and control theory, and related topics. Mathematics of Complexity and Dynamical Systems is an essential reference for all those interested in mathematical complexity, from undergraduate and graduate students up through professional researchers.

Book excerpt: This book provides state-of-art information on high-accuracy scientific computing and its future prospects, as applicable to the broad areas of fluid mechanics and combustion, and across all speed regimes. Beginning with the concepts of space-time discretization and dispersion relation in numerical computing, the foundations are laid for the efficient solution of the Navier-Stokes equations, with special reference to prominent approaches such as LES, DES and DNS. The basis of high-accuracy computing is rooted in the concept of stability, dispersion and phase errors, which require the comprehensive analysis of discrete computing by rigorously applying error dynamics. In this context, high-order finite-difference and finite-volume methods are presented. Naturally, the coverage also includes fundamental notions of high-performance computing and advanced concepts on parallel computing, including their implementation in prospective hexascale computers. Moreover, the book seeks to raise the bar beyond the pedagogical use of high-accuracy computing by addressing more complex physical scenarios, including turbulent combustion. Tools like proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), proper generalized decomposition (PGD), singular value decomposition (SVD), recursive POD, and high-order SVD in multi-parameter spaces are presented. Special attention is paid to bivariate and multivariate datasets in connection with various canonical flow and heat transfer cases. The book mainly addresses the needs of researchers and doctoral students in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, and all applied disciplines including applied mathematics, offering these readers a unique resource.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the recent developments in the subject of quasilinear hyperbolic systems with dissipation, such as frictional damping, relaxation, viscosity and heat diffusion. The mathematical theory behind this subject is emphasized in two ways. One emphasis is based on understanding the influence of the dissipation mechanism on the qualitative behavior of solutions, such as the nonlinear diffusive phenomena caused by damping, and other phenomena (including phase transition) for the case with viscosity and heat diffusion. The second emphasis is to take the systems with the dissipation mechanism as an approach to approximating the corresponding system of quasilinear hyperbolic conservation laws – the zero-limit relaxation, or the zero-limit viscosity, and the related topic of nonlinear stability of waves.
