Book excerpt: "Abstract (1) Methods of iterative solution for the partial-differential equations that govern the transient flow of gases in pipelines are obtained by using the method of characteristics and linear finite-difference techniques. Solutions are developed for 1) a constant gas compressibility factor throughout transient conditions, and 2) a variable gas compressibility factor at constant temperature dependent upon pressures encountered during transient flow. Theoretical studies are made to compare results using both approaches for pipelines operating at various constant flowing temperatures. Results show greater differences between the two methods at lower values of flowing temperature due to the more rapidly changing compressibility factor as a function of variable pressure. Abstract (2) Equations are developed for transient gas pipe flow using both a constant and variable gas compressibility factor. Solution is by characteristics method using linear finite-differences. Results are used to compare the effects of compressibility factor at various constant flowing temperatures"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Book excerpt: Offshore Pipelines covers the full scope of pipeline development from pipeline designing, installing, and testing to operating. It gathers the authors' experiences gained through years of designing, installing, testing, and operating submarine pipelines. The aim is to provide engineers and management personnel a guideline to achieve cost-effective management in their offshore and deepwater pipeline development and operations. The book is organized into three parts. Part I presents design practices used in developing submarine oil and gas pipelines and risers. Contents of this part include selection of pipe size, coating, and insulation. Part II provides guidelines for pipeline installations. It focuses on controlling bending stresses and pipe stability during laying pipelines. Part III deals with problems that occur during pipeline operations. Topics covered include pipeline testing and commissioning, flow assurance engineering, and pigging operations. This book is written primarily for new and experienced engineers and management personnel who work on oil and gas pipelines in offshore and deepwater. It can also be used as a reference for college students of undergraduate and graduate levels in Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering.* Pipeline design engineers will learn how to design low-cost pipelines allowing long-term operability and safety.* Pipeline operation engineers and management personnel will learn how to operate their pipeline systems in a cost effective manner.* Deepwater pipelining is a new technology developed in the past ten years and growing quickly.

Book excerpt: A general method of calculating the transient state of compressible fluid flow through complex piping networks has been developed and a computer program implementing this method has been written. This report presents the theory and logic upon which the solution method and program are based. It serves also as a basic introduction to the program, which is written for persons having minimal knowledge of the compressible flow theory. Keywords: Fluid dynamics; Compressible pipe flow. (EDC).

Our main approach is to determine the flow rate possible and compressor station horsepower required within the limitations of pipe strength, based on the pipe materials and grade. It addresses the scenarios where one or more compressors may be required depending on the gas flow rate and if discharge cooling is needed to limit the gas temperatures. The book is the result of over 38 years of the authors' experience on pipelines in North and South America while working for major energy companies such as ARCO, El Paso Energy, etc.

This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) operations offer the ability to control a relatively small gas kick dynamically, without shutting in the well using blowout preventers. One currently employed method of dynamic well control uses applied-back-pressure to force flow exiting the wellbore to equal flow entering the drill-pipe, which is taken as an indication that the influx has stopped. However, for flow out equals flow in to imply influx cessation, the assumption of incompressibility of fluid in the wellbore is necessary. When fluid compressibility is appreciable, solely ensuring flow rate continuity does not necessarily imply influx cessation. The period of "dynamic well control" in an MPD operation- from the moment an influx is identified until the moment the influx is believed to have ceased- is examined in this work. A control volume mass balance with compressibility is used to analyze the system. This approach enables inclusion in flow calculations of the expansion or compression of in-situ influx gas within the wellbore. Since cessation of influx is the primary goal of dynamic well control, this work examines the transient, multiphase flow behavior in the annulus to explore limitations of the existing applied-back-pressure, dynamic, well control technique. It is shown that with the existing method, influx cessation does not always occur once flow out is constrained to equal flow in. It is also shown that in some situations where influx cessation is indeed achieved when flow out equals flow in, the back pressure applied at surface is higher than required to achieve influx cessation- i.e., influx ceases before the moment when flow out equals flow in. These outcomes are the consequence of the compressibility of the in-situ gas, and make the existing method unreliable in some critical situations of influx. A new applied-back-pressure, dynamic well control technique has been proposed, and a transient, multiphase flow analysis is used to identify pressure-based indicators of influx cessation. It is shown that time derivatives of pressure and pressure transfer carry the signature of well response for the given control strategy, and can be used to infer cessation of influx. It is argued that, taken together, these are more reliable indicators of influx cessation (and hence successful well control) than solely ensuring flow out equals flow in. Numerous transient, multiphase flow simulations have been conducted to support the key conclusions of this work.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the modeling and analysis of heat and fluid flow in microchannels and micro-systems, compiling a number of analytical and hybrid numerical-analytical solutions for models that account for the relevant micro-scale effects, with the corresponding experimental analysis validation when applicable. The volume stands as the only available compilation of easy to use analytically-based solutions for micro-scale heat and fluid flow problems, that systematically incorporates the most relevant micro-scale effects into the mathematical models, followed by their physical interpretation on the micro-system behavior.

Book excerpt: Transient compressible flow in porous media was investigated analytically. The major portion of the investigation was directed toward improving and understanding of dispersion in these flows and developing rapid accurate numerical techniques for predicting the extent of dispersion. The results are of interest in the containment of underground nuclear experiments. The transient one-dimensional transport of a trace component in a gas flow is analyzed. A conservation equation accounting for the effects of convective transport, dispersive transport, and decay, is developed. This relation, as well as a relation governing the fluid flow, is used to predict trace component concentration as a function of position and time. A detailed analysis of transport associated with the isothermal flow of an ideal gas is done. Because the governing equations are nonlinear, numerical calculations are performed. The ideal gas flow is calculated using a highly stable implicit iterative procedure with an Eulerian mesh. In order to avoid problems of anomolous dispersion associated with finite difference calculation, trace component convection and dispersion are calculated using a Lagrangian mesh. Details of the Eulerian- Lagrangian numerical technique are presented. Computer codes have been developed and implemented on the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory computer system. (TFD).

Book excerpt: The interfacial stability of a liquid layer with a compressible gas flowing over it is investigated. The liquid is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid; the gas to be inviscid and to obey the equations of linearized compressible flow theory. The effects of surface tension at the gas-liquid interface and a gravitational body force are included. (Author).
