Book Synopsis Extending Medicare Coverage for Preventive and Other Services by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Extending Medicare Coverage for Preventive and Other Services written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-07 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, which was developed by an expert committee of the Institute of Medicine, reviews the first three services listed above. It is intended to assist policymakers by providing syntheses of the best evidence available about the effectiveness of these services and by estimating the cost to Medicare of covering them. For each service or condition examined, the committee commissioned a review of the scientific literature that was presented and discussed at a public workshop. As requested by Congress, this report includes explicit estimates only of costs to Medicare, not costs to beneficiaries, their families, or others. It also does not include cost-effectiveness analyses. That is, the extent of the benefits relative to the costs to Medicareâ€"or to society generallyâ€"is not evaluated for the services examined. The method for estimating Medicare costs follows the generic estimation practices of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The objective was to provide Congress with estimates that were based on familiar procedures and could be compared readily with earlier and later CBO estimates. For each condition or service, the estimates are intended to suggest the order of magnitude of the costs to Medicare of extending coverage, but the estimates could be considerably higher or lower than what Medicare might actually spend were coverage policies changed. The estimates cover the five-year period 2000-2004. In addition to the conclusions about specific coverage issues, the report examines some broader concerns about the processes for making coverage decisions and about the research and organizational infrastructure for these decisions. It also briefly examines the limits of coverage as a means of improving health services and outcomes and the limits of evidence as a means of resolving policy and ethical questions.

Book Synopsis The U.S. Oral Health Workforce in the Coming Decade by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book The U.S. Oral Health Workforce in the Coming Decade written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to oral health services is a problem for all segments of the U.S. population, and especially problematic for vulnerable populations, such as rural and underserved populations. The many challenges to improving access to oral health services include the lack of coordination and integration among the oral health, public health, and medical health care systems; misaligned payment and education systems that focus on the treatment of dental disease rather than prevention; the lack of a robust evidence base for many dental procedures and workforce models; and regulatory barriers that prevent the exploration of alternative models of care. This volume, the summary of a three-day workshop, evaluates the sufficiency of the U.S. oral health workforce to consider three key questions: What is the current status of access to oral health services for the U.S. population? What workforce strategies hold promise to improve access to oral health services? How can policy makers, state and federal governments, and oral health care providers and practitioners improve the regulations and structure of the oral health care system to improve access to oral health services?

Book Synopsis Medical and Dental Space Planning by : Jain Malkin
Download or read book Medical and Dental Space Planning written by Jain Malkin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE UPDATED DEFINITIVE REFERENCE ON MEDICAL AND DENTAL OFFICE DESIGN Medical and Dental Space Planning is an indispensable guide to the myriad of details that make a medical or dental practice efficient and productive. The unique needs of more than thirty specialties, as well as primary care, are explained in the context of new technology and the many regulatory and compliance issues influencing design. Concepts are also presented for ambulatory surgical centers, diagnostic imaging, clinical laboratories, breast care clinics, endoscopy centers, community health centers, radiation oncology, and single-specialty and multispecialty group practices and clinics. A thorough review of the latest dental technology and many creative space plans and design ideas for each dental specialty will be of interest to both dentists and design professionals. Important topics like infection control are top of mind, influencing every aspect of dental office design. An "inside look" at what goes on in each specialist's office will familiarize readers with medical and dental procedures, how they are executed, and the types of equipment used. Technology has radically impacted medical and dental practice: digital radiography, electronic health records, mobile health devices, point-of-care diagnostic testing, digital diagnostic instrumentation, CAD/CAM systems for digital dental impressions and milling of restorations in the dentist's office, portable handheld X-ray, and 3D cone beam computed tomography for dentists all have major implications for facility design. The influence of the Affordable Care Act is transforming primary care from volume-based to value-based, which has an impact on the design of facilities, resulting in team collaboration spaces, larger consultative examination/assessment rooms, and accommodation for multidisciplinary practitioners who proactively manage patient care, often in a patient-centered medical home context. The wealth of information in this book is organized to make it easy to use and practical. Program tables accompany each medical and dental specialty to help the designer compute the number and sizes of required rooms and total square footage for each practice. This handy reference can be used during interviews for a "reality check" on a client's program or during space planning. Other features, for example, help untangle the web of compliance and code issues governing office-based surgery. Illustrated with more than 600 photographs and drawings, Medical and Dental Space Planning is an essential tool for interior designers and architects as well as dentists, physicians, and practice management consultants.
Book Synopsis Dental Care for Everyone by : James Morse Dunning
Download or read book Dental Care for Everyone written by James Morse Dunning and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1970s when this book was published, dental care in America below the crisis level was confined almost exclusively to the upper and upper-middle classes. With perhaps the highest standards in the world for dental care, this country has done an unnecessarily poor job of distributing that care widely and efficiently. Why? In this book, Dr. Dunning examines not only the organization of dental careprivate practice, clinics, health centers, and the use of auxiliary personnelbut also payment systems such as voluntary insurance plans that are widening the market for dental care. He proposes improvements ranging from an increased use of portable dental equipment to large-scale reorganizations of dental practice. This would make dental care, appropriate to need, available to everyone. When he wrote this book, Dr. Dunning was Professor of Ecological Dentistry, Emeritus, and Harvard University.
