Book excerpt: Written in response to the Hawk's Nest Tunnel disaster of 1931 in Gauley Bridge, West Virginia, The Book of the Dead is an important part of West Virginia's cultural heritage and a powerful account of one of the worst industrial catastrophes in American history. The poems collected here investigate the roots of a tragedy that killed hundreds of workers, most of them African American. They are a rare engagement with the overlap between race and environment in Appalachia. Published for the first time alongside photographs by Nancy Naumburg, who accompanied Rukeyser to Gauley Bridge in 1936, this edition of The Book of the Dead includes an introduction by Catherine Venable Moore, whose writing on the topic has been anthologized in Best American Essays.

Download or read book The Agricultural Notebook written by Richard J. Soffe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Twentieth Edition takes The Agricultural Notebook into its third century; it has been thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the considerable changes in agricultural and rural practices and policies which have taken place since publication of the previous edition. The book is divided into four parts: Crops, Management, Animal Production, and Farm Equipment. New sections added to this edition include: 1) A Marketing Perspective on Diversification, 2) Organic Farming, and 3) Farming and Wildlife. Since the first edition was compiled by Primrose McConnell in 1883, The Agricultural Notebook has become established as the standard work of reference for all those in the farming industry. With each edition it has evolved and changed in such a way as to provide agricultural scientists, students of agriculture and related subjects, farmers, farm managers and land agents with an abundance of current information on all aspects of the business of farming. Many comments received from lecturers and students who have used previous editions of the book have been taken into account in producing the twentieth edition. The thirty contributing authors have fully updated chapters, a new clearer layout has been adopted and much new information is included in easy-to-use tables and figures. The Agricultural Notebook is an essential purchase for all students of agriculture, countryside, and rural studies. Professionals such as farmers, land agents, agricultural scientists, advisers, suppliers to the agriculture industry and all those with a connection and interest in the agricultural community will find a huge wealth of information within the book’s covers. All libraries within universities, colleges and research establishments where agricultural and rural sciences are studied and taught should have multiple copies of this important new edition on their shelves.
Book Synopsis Mildred's Book Store by : Mike Nystrom
Download or read book Mildred's Book Store written by Mike Nystrom and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mildred's Book Store" sounded like a catchy name for my collection of book titles and authors. Mildred, to me, seemed like a good name for an entrepreneur of a small business like an independent bookstore. As in any such retail outlet, there are different categories of books to appeal to any reader. As I began organizing my collection, I was able to arrange them in eight general categories, including a catch-all "Potpourri" section. Since they are only titles and not whole books, I hope that the reader finds favorites in all eight sections. I also hope that this will spur an interest in some of these various fields that leads to purchases of books in those fields. If, by having my collection published, it both entertains and creates interest in new areas of life, I will be completely satisfied.

Download or read book Man with an Axe written by Jon A. Jackson and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The toughest, most darkly comic, consistently superior American procedural on the market” takes on the greatest mystery of all: the death of Jimmy Hoffa (Booklist). When an eager young historian asks Detroit police detective “Fang” Mulheisen for the real story of Grootka—his legendary law-enforcement mentor—the question leads him to uncover his late friend’s notebooks. And with them, Mulheisen may also have stumbled upon the answer to one of the biggest unanswered questions in American history . . . What happened to Jimmy Hoffa? The notebooks tell an incredible story in which the supposedly late labor leader was, in fact, about to meet his end when he was rescued by a gifted musician and spirited into hiding in the wilderness of northern Michigan. More than that, the past Grootka describes may be related to a deadly mystery in present-day Detroit. With this action-packed novel spanning decades of cops and criminals, “Jackson remains a master of irreverent, hard-boiled comedy” (Publishers Weekly).
Book Synopsis Legends Are Born by : Daniel Burchell
Download or read book Legends Are Born written by Daniel Burchell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, Ralis seemed to pick up the information faster and faster, or maybe Landon was teaching slower and slower. After a while, Landon would just give Ralis a book, he’d read it, get asked a few questions, Ralis would get them all right and Landon would take a nap while Ralis practiced on his own after studying from a new book. “Your mind is like a little sponge Ralis, keep filling it up!” With time and patients, Landon managed to help Ralis control his emotions, so he wouldn’t get all worked up if something went wrong, at first, Ralis’ aim wasn’t very good and he loved to watch things like jelly or butter splatter. But, when Landon forced him to clean up his messes by using ‘Grasping’ or ‘Holding’ spells on him, Ralis was out matched. After some time, Ralis learned better aim and self control.
Book Synopsis The Guilty Innocent by : Shannon Adamcik
Download or read book The Guilty Innocent written by Shannon Adamcik and published by Shannon Adamcik. This book was released on 2012-10-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixteen-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddard agreed to house sit for relatives on the weekend of September 22, 2006. It was something the teenager had done before…but this time something went terribly wrong. When the family returned home at the end of the weekend they found Cassie lying on their living room floor brutally stabbed to death. Detectives focused on two of Cassie’s classmates who had briefly visited her on the night that she was murdered: Torey Adamcik and Brian Draper. Initially both boys denied any knowledge of the crime, but after two separate interrogations, Brian Draper told detectives a chilling story of murder straight out of a horror movie. The two boys were immediately arrested, and a shocking videotape was discovered that seemed to depict the two teens not only planning the cold-blooded murder, but celebrating it. Community outrage was strong and immediate. The public demanded justice. But was the video actually what it appeared to be: a cold-blooded documentary that detailed the plotting of Cassie’s murder; or something else entirely? Could anyone uncover the truth in time and convince a jury that sometimes things aren't always what they appear to be? The Guilty Innocent is narrated by Shannon Adamcik, mother of Torey, one of the accused boys. It takes readers behind the scenes of a trial where prosecutors cared more about public opinion than truth, defense attorneys, who had never argued a murder case, were in over their heads, and a young boy’s life hung in the balance. The United States is the only country in the world that will charge a juvenile as an adult and sentence them to life without parole. As the mother of one such child, I know exactly what happens when a juvenile is placed in adult court where they cannot defend themselves. They are immediately cut off from all human contact, locked in isolation, and railroaded through a justice system they simply cannot comprehend. Consequently, many of these juveniles are sentenced too much longer and harsher terms than their adult counterparts. I've personally lived through this, and I was compelled to write about it. I began for the simple reason that I had lived through this horrendous ordeal and I ached for someone to confide in. But reliving the most painful part of my life was extraordinarily difficult. Ultimately the only reason that I was able to persevere was my deep belief that the story was important and needed to be told. That is still true. This is a true story and no one can tell it better than the people who lived it. A crime reporter can look at the details of a case, but they cannot tell you how it feels to live through it. I can and I did. I used the pre-trial and trial transcripts, copies of the police reports, the autopsy and DNA reports, and DVD recordings of all of the evidence in the case. I've done copious research. But more importantly, I take readers step-by-step through what it feels like when your 16-year-old son is accused of first-degree murder; all the odds are stacked against him; and his defense is in the hands of attorneys you can’t fully trust to come through for you.
