Book excerpt: This leading practitioner reference and text--now in a revised and expanded fourth edition--provides the knowledge needed to use state-of-the-art cognitive tests with individuals of all ages, from preschoolers to adults. The volume examines major theories and tests of intelligence (in chapters written by the theorists and test developers themselves) and presents research-based approaches to test interpretation. Contributors address critical issues in evaluating culturally and linguistically diverse students, gifted students, and those with intellectual disability, sensory–motor impairments, traumatic brain injuries, and learning difficulties and disabilities. The fourth edition highlights the use of cognitive test results in planning school-based interventions. New to This Edition *Complete coverage of new or updated tests: WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, WISC-V Integrated, WJ IV, ECAD, CAS2, RIAS-2, KABC-II Normative Update, and UNIT2. *Chapters on cutting-edge approaches to identifying specific learning disabilities and reading disorders. *Chapters on brain imaging, neuropsychological intervention in schools, adult intellectual development, and DSM-5 criteria for learning disorders. *Updated chapters on theories of intelligence, their research base, and their clinical utility in guiding cognitive and neuropsychological assessment practice.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of composite Omega, as developed by J.A. Pierce, is shown to be equivalent to a statistical optimization of the information available from two Omega carrier frequencies. However, composite Omega offers no increased stability over that available from the 13.6-kHz carrier except over arctic paths during disturbed conditions. From a statistical standpoint, conventional lane resolution of the 10.2-kHz carrier lanes from 3.4-kHz difference frequency measurements is a virtual certainty except during disturbed conditions. Book excerpt: What if your new client, a man in his early 40s, cannot answer basic questions in your initial assessment interview? You were aware that many men do not like to talk about their feelings, but this client seems kind of frozen. You think he might be alexithymic, but you do not know how to assess for that, or even more importantly, how to treat it. Assessing and Treating Emotionally Inexpressive Men has answers. Chapters explain why some men are emotionally inexpressive because of their childhood socialization, and the book provides both scales for assessing alexithymia in men and treatment manuals for helping these men became more emotionally self-aware in individual and group therapy. The book also offers case studies that explains how to integrate the authors’ approach with any model of psychotherapy. Clinicians will come away from this book with a clear sense for how to treat alexithymia in the early sessions of psychotherapy and thereby improve treatment uptake and outcomes.

This book was released on 2001-06-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies demand new materials. Polymer composites, with their wide range of possible fillers and polymers, open the way to an enormous range of materials with differing chemical, physical, and mechanical properties. The ultimate goal of polymer composite research is to formulate procedures that will lead to the design of composites with preset, i.e. specified, properties. Based on many years' experience in the field, the authors prepare the way towards just such a design procedure. The key element is the analysis and classification of the state of the filler-polymer interfaces from the point of view of their acid-base adsorption interactions. These interfacial phenomena play a pivotal role in determining overall properties of the composite: its rheological behaviour, its structural properties, catalytic effects in polymerization and polycondensation, and other technological characteristics. The book discusses and evaluates the extensive previous research scattered throughout the literature in Eastern Europe and the West, presents numerous experimental studies, and sets new benchmarks for the analysis of polymer composites. The book is required for researchers wanting to keep abreast of the progress in the burgeoning fields of polymer analysis and design.

Book excerpt: This book contains 31 papers presented at the symposium on "Recent Advances in Composite Materials" which was organized in honor of Professor Stephanos A. Paipetis. The symposium took place at Democritus University of Thrace, in Xanthi, Greece on June 12-14, 2003. The book is a tribute to Stephanos A. Paipetis, a pioneer of composite materials, in recognition of his continuous, original diversified and outstanding contributions for half a century. The book consists of invited papers written by leading experts in the field. It contains original contributions concerning the latest developments in composite materials. It covers a wide range of subjects including experimental characterization, analytical modeling and applications of composite materials. The papers are arranged in the following six sections: General concepts, stress and failure analysis, mechanical properties, metal matrix composites, structural analysis and applications of composite materials. The first section on general concepts contains seven papers dealing with composites through the pursuit of the consilience among them, computation and mechatronic automation of multiphysics research, a theory of anisotropic scattering, wave propagation, multi-material composite wedges, a three-dimensional finite element analysis around broken fibers and an in situ assessment of the micromechanics of large scale bridging in ceramic composites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biocomposites for Industrial Applications: Construction, Biomedical, Transportation and Food Packaging reviews the properties and performance of these materials, with a focus on their intended applications. Sections cover their properties and performance, including processing conditions, structure and property relations. For biomedical applications, researchers need a broad understanding of conceptual design, physico-chemical properties, and cytotoxicity (orthopedic implants). As the usage of biocomposites has increased significantly over recent years, mainly due to the advantages these materials have when compared to synthetic composites, such as (i) renewability (ii) eco-friendly components, (iii) biodegradable aspects, and (iv) non-toxicity, this book provides a great update on the technology. These advantages will help to attract wider use in more lightweight-based applications such as (i) construction and building (ii) biomedical (iii) transportation (automotive, marine, and aerospace), and (iv) in food packaging. - Covers recent applications in construction, transportation, food packaging and biomedical sectors - Focuses on materials requirements, factors governing the properties of these materials and durability - Discusses factors effecting processing conditions and recent advancements in design and fabrication - Provides a detailed outline of experimental research in each chapter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On February 15-17, 1993, a conference on Large Scale Optimization, hosted by the Center for Applied Optimization, was held at the University of Florida. The con ference was supported by the National Science Foundation, the U. S. Army Research Office, and the University of Florida, with endorsements from SIAM, MPS, ORSA and IMACS. Forty one invited speakers presented papers on mathematical program ming and optimal control topics with an emphasis on algorithm development, real world applications and numerical results. Participants from Canada, Japan, Sweden, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Greece, and Denmark gave the meeting an important international component. At tendees also included representatives from IBM, American Airlines, US Air, United Parcel Serice, AT & T Bell Labs, Thinking Machines, Army High Performance Com puting Research Center, and Argonne National Laboratory. In addition, the NSF sponsored attendance of thirteen graduate students from universities in the United States and abroad. Accurate modeling of scientific problems often leads to the formulation of large scale optimization problems involving thousands of continuous and/or discrete vari ables. Large scale optimization has seen a dramatic increase in activities in the past decade. This has been a natural consequence of new algorithmic developments and of the increased power of computers. For example, decomposition ideas proposed by G. Dantzig and P. Wolfe in the 1960's, are now implement able in distributed process ing systems, and today many optimization codes have been implemented on parallel machines.
