Book excerpt: L'injection de milieux granulaires de conductivité hydraulique faible à moyenne est un procédé impliquant l'utilisation de ciments spéciaux, tels que les ciments microfins, et une formulation optimale des coulis d'injection afin de minimiser les coûts relatifs à l'imperméabilisation de ces milieux. L'optimisation des produits d'injection doit passer par la compréhension et la prévision du comportement de ces coulis de ciment lors de leur injection dans un milieu granulaire. Plusieurs auteurs ont développé des critères d'injectabilité tenant compte d'une ou deux caractéristiques seulement du milieu et/ou du produit injecté. Ces caractéristiques sont généralement des caractéristiques géométriques et elles n'apparaissent pas suffisantes pour prévoir avec précision la pénétrabilité d'un coulis dans un milieu granulaire. En particulier, la présence d'eau dans le milieu à traiter n'est que rarement considérée alors qu'elle a une influence directe sur la propagation du coulis de ciment. Des essais d'injection ont été réalisés en laboratoire dans le cadre de cette thèse avec pour objectif de comprendre le mode de propagation de coulis de ciment microfin dans des milieux granulaires partiellement saturés et quasiment saturés. Il apparaît, suite à cette étude, que les modèles de propagation des coulis diffèrent en fonction du degré de saturation initial du milieu à traiter. En effet, l'importance respective des phénomènes de dispersion mécanique et de filtration des coulis varie avec ce paramètre qu'est le degré de saturation. L'efficacité de l'injection des différents coulis de ciment microfin considérés dans cette étude est également discutée en terme d'amélioration de l'imperméabilité du milieu traité.

Book excerpt: Ce projet de recherche est consacré à l’étude du comportement mécanique des sols granulaires injectés par des coulis de natures variées, qui sont usuellement employés sur les chantiers de traitement des sols en traitement de consolidation ou d’étanchéité : du gel, du ciment ultra-fin, du coulis à base minérale. Ce mémoire présente d’abord l’analyse de l’amélioration du comportement mécanique d’un sable injecté en laboratoire, mise en évidence au cours de procédures successives d’essais plus au moins classiques de la mécanique des sols. Sur des sables de référence, injectés par une gamme de coulis de référence, nous avons tout d’abord mis en œuvre des essais traditionnels (essais de cisaillement, essais de traction, essais triaxiaux). Puis nous avons développé un système d’instrumentation de précision afin d’améliorer la qualité de notre information dans le domaine des faibles déformations, notamment en vue d’analyser l’évolution des caractéristiques d’élasticité du sable. Enfin, nous avons étudié les aspects à plus long terme du comportement du sable injecté en laboratoire : le fluage et quelques caractéristiques de durabilité. Notre réflexion s’est ensuite appuyée sur une double analyse terrain/laboratoire, afin de caractériser l’amélioration d’un sol réellement injecté in-situ. Sur des sites expérimentaux présentant des terrains granulaires en cours de traitement, nous avons évalué l’amélioration mécanique résultant du traitement selon deux méthodes : dans un premier temps, par des essais in-situ de type pressiométriques, en déterminant des facteurs d’amélioration perceptibles sur le terrain. Dans un second temps, nous avons réévalué cette amélioration mécanique selon des essais de laboratoire traditionnels entrepris sur des échantillons prélevés avant puis après traitement. Ces multiples voies de recherche nous ont conduit à proposer des lois d’évolutions simples pour les principales caractéristiques mécaniques d’un sol granulaire, sous l’effet d’un traitement par injection avec un coulis déterminé.

Tout d’abord, nous développons un dispositif expérimental spécifique d’injection d’éprouvettes de faible hauteur. Ce dernier vise à améliorer la compréhension de l’écoulement et du transport de ces fluides complexes dans des milieux granulaires. Il nous permet notamment de souligner un phénomène de filtration de particules de ciment par le milieu granulaire. Puis, nous étudions l’influence de paramètres significatifs sur le processus de l’injection (rhéologie du coulis, pression d’injection, débit d’injection, distance d’injection, porosité, perméabilité). Nous proposons, ensuite, de coupler ce dispositif à des techniques d’analyse d’image pour décrire le comportement hydrodynamique du sol injecté durant la propagation du coulis dans l’éprouvette. Dans une deuxième phase, nous discutons de la répartition du ciment filtré dans nos échantillons injectés grâce à la gammadensimétrie. Nous estimons l’efficacité du procédé d’injection, d’un point de vue propriété de transfert, à partir de mesures de perméabilité au gaz à l’état durci. Nous complétons cette étude par une analyse du réseau poreux obtenu suite à l’injection, à l’aide de la porosimétrie au mercure, d’observations et de microanalyses au MEB. Nous montrons également une corrélation entre la structure poreuse du sol injecté et l’évolution de la perméabilité, en employant une formulation issue de l’approche de Katz-Thompson. Enfin, nous enrichissons l’outil de simulation numérique du laboratoire d’une nouvelle loi d’évolution de la perméabilité prenant mieux en compte cette filtration.
