Book excerpt: La finalidad de este trabajo se concreta en el estudio de nuevos materiales compuestos basados en una matriz fenólica reforzada con fibras celulósicas de tipo viscosa sin modificar y modificadas a través de los tratamientos con hidróxido sódico o con silanos. El tema es novedoso, en primer lugar por utilizar resinas fenólicas como matriz, que hasta la fecha, dentro de los polímeros termoestables, son las menos probadas. Por otro lado, se incorporan fibras celulósicas procedentes de madera de eucalipto como refuerzo de los materiales, acerca de los cuales hay muy pocos trabajos publicados. La idea expuesta se presenta como una alternativa atractiva para el sector automovilístico. Cabe esperar una disminución apreciable en sus costes de producción, amén de reducir su dependencia respecto a materias primas sujetas a grandes fluctuaciones de precio. Desde el punto de vista del medioambiente destaca la utilización de fibras de origen natural, reciclables y de poco peso, en lugar de las sintéticas, como las de vidrio, carbono o aramida, tradicionalmente empleadas y resultantes de procesos petroleoquímicos. Se trata de obtener un material compuesto con buenas propiedades mecánicas, térmicas y morfológicas, que de acuerdo con los resultados del trabajo, parece conseguirse.
