Book excerpt: Creep Fatigue knowledge is necessary for meaningful reliability assessment of existing power generating plant because cyclic operation of an aging power plant fleet requires better understanding of factors affecting damage initiation and propagation, as well as technologies and methods to predict damage accumulation for individual components and overall safe/economic life. Utilities typically adopt operating practices which involve more severe cycles, either in terms of number or magnitude or both, so that there is, and will continue to be, a requirement to assess the creep fatigue performance of traditional boiler and turbine components. The recent installation of large numbers of combustion turbines and the associated heat recovery steam generators has significantly increased the number of materials and components which are operating under cyclic conditions at high temperatures. Indeed, the materials and component types susceptible to creep-fatigue is increasing since much of the new high efficiency coal plant will be operating with steam/metal temperatures much higher than those of traditional plant. Recent expert review has reemphasized that with most practical scenarios regarding future generation mix, fossil plant will continue to be important. Thus, there is the expectation that creep-fatigue damage will increase in occurrence, and affect an increased range of components. Different challenges will be faced since the new components will involve a greater range of alloys, methods of manufacture, and types of operation than conventional fossil generating stations. It is therefore apparent that operation under cyclic conditions at temperatures where creep can occur the potential for creep/fatigue damage is, and will continue to be, a matter of significant concern. The present paper considers specific challenges associated with creep/fatigue in creep strength enhanced ferritic steels such as Grade 91 and Grade 92.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our rationale for the second edition remains the same as for the first edition, which appeared over twenty years ago. This is to offer simplified, useful and easily understood methods for dealing with the creep of components operating under conditions met in practice. When the first edition was written, we could not claim that the methods which were introduced were well-tried. They were somewhat conjectural, although firmly based, but not sufficiently well devel oped. Since that time, the Reference Stress Methods (RSM) introduced in the book have received much scrutiny and development. The best recognition we could have of the original methods is the fact that they are now firmly embedded in codes of practice. Hopefully, we have now gone a long way towards achieving our original objectives. There are major additions to this second edition which should help to justify our claims. These include further clarification regarding Reference Stress Methods in Chapter 4. There are also new topics which depend on RSM in varying degrees: • Creep fracture is covered in Chapter 7, where methods for assessing creep crack initiation and crack growth are fully described. This chapter starts with a review of the basic concepts of fracture mechanics and follows with useful, approximate methods, compatible with the needs of design for creep and the availability of standard data. • Creep/fatigue interactions and environmental effects appear in Chapter 8.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically, the lifetime assessment of high temperature components, for which both creep and fatigue are principal damage mechanisms, involves (1) the determination of the stress/strain state at critical locations and (2) a numerical evaluation of the consequential damage condition. Until recently, there has not been a standard procedure specifically covering creep-fatigue testing practices. Creep-fatigue tests had been performed for many years, but the reliability and the form of the information generated was dependent on the expertise and specific interests of individual test laboratories. This situation is now resolved by the publication of a new ASTM standard based on an Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) led initiative. The way in which the guidance contained in this new standard specifically aims to provide creep-fatigue data requirements for defect-free component assessment is examined. Cyclic/hold tests, usually involving a simple cycle shape representative of the service transients experienced by the target component, are particularly informative in the provision of data to indicate the concurrent influences of cyclic loading on creep deformation characteristics and creep deformation on cyclic plastic response. The crack initiation endurances of such tests also provide the basis of creep-fatigue damage summation representations for a given material. Sequential creep-fatigue testing can be used to quantify the effects of prior cyclic deformation on creep rupture or prior creep deformation on fatigue endurance. The use of such test methods is also considered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been special interest recently in developing new, reliable analytical design methods for components under higher temperature conditions. However, at present, the use of material properties is still limited to arrays of single characteristics which do not interact with each other. In this work, several creep fatigue experiments on smooth specimens of IN 800 H have been carried out at 830°C. In some tests, these have also been combined with inside hysteresis loops to investigate the different effects on deformation and damage behavior which originate in a creep and fatigue environment. As a result of these tests, it has been found that the material behavior under creep-fatigue conditions can be significantly changed compared to the material behavior under simple load conditions. Therefore there is a need for life analysis methods to be expanded to include possible variations in properties; for greater accuracy, the material properties must be treated as a complex interacting system of parameters. The examination has been extended to a typical component used under high-temperature conditions. The results of the numerical analysis show that the stress-strain history in the critical area of that component is not simply strain controlled, as it is in the typical laboratory creep-fatigue interaction life test containing a tensile or compressive dwell at constant peak strain level. At high temperatures, the conditions in the component are more severe, causing the life to be reduced compared with the typical laboratory test. In this paper, these conditions are successfully simulated with the help of a generalized Neuber law: ? . ?p = constant. Based on this ratio, the engineering method for evaluating component geometry and loading conditions and their effects on material behavior can be established.

Book excerpt: When structural components are subjected to severe cyclic loading conditions with intermittent periods of sustained loading at elevated temperature, the designer must guard against a failure mode caused by the interaction of time-dependent and time-independent deformation. This phenomena is referred to as creep-fatigue interaction. The most elementary form of interaction theory (called linear damage summation) is now embodied in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. In recent years, a competitor for the linear damage summation theory has emerged, called strainrange partitioning. This procedure is based upon the visualization of the cyclic strain in a uniaxial creep-fatigue test as a hysteresis loop, with the inelastic strains in the loop counter-balanced in one of two ways. The two theories are compared and contrasted in terms of ease of use, possible inconsistencies, and component life prediction. Future work to further test the damage theories is recommended. (TFD).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is based on the results and experience gained in assessing both public domain and MATTER data, some previously reported in the MATTER deliverable D4.5: "Creep-fatigue interaction rules for P91" and some assessed here. A number of methods, including interaction diagram based methods and simplified methods, have been compared for predicting the creepfatigue life of P91 steel. The effect of cyclic softening on creep properties have been considered in the evaluations presented in this report. The purpose of this report is to give recommendations for creep and creep-fatigue assessment for components made of X10CrMoVNb9-1 (P91) steel. Based on the conclusions of the assessments the following recommendations are given: 1.^The creep properties of P91 steel suffer from cyclic loading and it is recommended that the current RCC-MRx creep strain equations should be modified or replaced by a model that can implement time factors or stress reduction factors to correct for softening. Suitable models have been identified. The softening of P91 potentially causes unconservativeness in significant creep conditions where accumulated strain is a limiting design factor. 2. The interaction diagram models currently applied in design codes are complicated to apply and include several complex modelling challenges. It has been recommended that alternative modelling concepts, such as using simplified models should be considered for use in design codes. The simplified models optimized for P91 have been shown to give good and robust predictions on cycles to failure. 3. Currently available P91 data mainly consists of large strain range and short hold period data, where creep is mainly causing additional strain.^Data with verified creep cavitation damage is limited or totally lacking. It is recommended that more data is generated at low strain ranges and long hold times to improve long term extrapolation robustness. Tensile property data for softened material is also needed to determine the stress range where power-law breakdown behaviour in creep can be expected and to improve the understanding of the long term microstructural evolution in cyclic service.
