Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New French Grammar, Vol. 1: Syntax French grammars for the use of English students are already so numerous that I cannot but apologise for adding my humble contribution to the imposing list. I entertain some hepe, how ever, that there may be found in this new Syntax, the outcome of over thirteen years' experience in teaching French, some grounds to justify its appearance. I have endeavoured to explain several difficulties left un touched, as far as I know, by my predecessors in the same field, and think I may venture to say that there are few important subjects in the following pages concerning which some new rules or observations have not been introduced. Without entering into details, I would call special attention to the treatment of the Moods and Tenses, and of the Adverbs, notably the negative ne, and to the many idioms given in different parts of the book. At the same time, the classification of the various subjects, the numerous headings, the frequent subdivisions in the body of the same paragraph, have all been designed with a 'view to add to the clearness of the work; whilst the way in which the Exceptions have been arranged, in a separate column opposite the Rules, will, it is hoped, prove a useful innovation. A companion volume of Exercises will appear very shortly, to be had separately, or bound together with the Syntax. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendious French Grammar, Vol. 1: In Two Independent Parts, Introductory and Advanced From the Preface to the Grammar of which this forms the First Part. To meet a twofold need, first, of an easy and rapid intro duction to reading, secondly, of a critical exposition of both grammar and syntax, the book is divided into two parts, each forming an independent whole by itself. The First Part is intended to enable the learner to begin reading with profit at the earliest practicable moment, or in from three to six weeks. It contains simply an elementary outline of the essentials of French pronunciation and accidence (some indispensable syntactical directions included), as well as accompanying exercises. The rules are purposely few, and as simple as has seemed compatible with accuracy of state ment. Details and exceptions are left to the Second Part, where each of the subjects contained here, as well as others, receives fuller and independent treatment. Though entirely elementary, this First Part is thought to contain sufficient material for its purpose. It may even be all that is needed where only a minimum of time can be given to grammar, or where scholars are too young to undertake a more earnest study of details. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete French Grammar, Vol. 1 The first American edition of this Grammar was published March 26, 1901. It was received with favor, and since that date numerous reimpressions have been made to meet the demands of the public. The present revision has been undertaken for the purpose of introducing such changes as time and experience have suggested as likely to be useful, without however disturbing the original character of the book, or changing the paragraph numbers. The use of the phonetic symbols adopted by the Association Phonétique Internationale has been retained throughout the book, wherever needed to aid in the teaching of pronunciation. The pronunciation of all French words in the French-English portion of the Vocabulary is given by phonetic transcription based upon the Dictionnaire Phonétique of Michaelis and Passy. The most considerable changes have been made in the Exercises I-XXXIX of Part I, which have been rewritten by Professor A. Coleman of the Romance Department of the University of Chicago, who, with great unselfishness and in a spirit of admiration for the Grammar, has cooperated with the authors and publishers in their effort to make the book more useful to teachers and students. The grammatical part of each lesson remains substantially as it was in the original edition. In the Exercises an attempt has been made, in accordance with advanced methods of teaching, to provide an abundant and varied apparatus for oral practice and for training in accuracy of pronunciation, in writing from dictation, and in composition; also a section of useful Classroom Expressions has been introduced for the convenience of both teachers and students. In fact, it is everywhere emphasized throughout the book that learning to speak the language is of prime importance. Few sounds, however, in one language are exactly reproduced in another hence the correspondence of the sounds in the following tables is only approximate. For purposes of convenience and comparison phoneticians employ symbols of their own, each representing a single sound. Such an alphabet is given in the right hand column of each table. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar, or Plain Instructions for the Learning of French: In a Series of Letters L. Barons we set about learning any thing, be it what it may, it is right that we ascertain the thing to be such as is likely to be useful to us; it is but reasonable that the usefulness should, in point of magnitude, bear a just proportion to the expense, whether of money or of time, demanded by the task which we are going to encounter. If I did not think the French language a thing of this character, I certainly should not wish you to learn it. But a very little reflection will convince you, that it is a branch of learning, which, in the present age, stands, in the scale of importance, next after that of our native language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary French: The Essentials of French Grammar With Exercises This text-book for beginners is an outgrowth of Foundations of Franck. When a revision of this was first undertaken, the purpose was to adapt it to a wider range of use by the insertion of a greater variety of exercises and the addition of vocabularies. So many incidental alterations and additions have attended the work that an entirely new book has resulted. However, the logical arrangement of topics, and the clearness and simplicity of statement that characterized the earlier volume, are every where retained. At the present time the ideas of American teachers are begin ning to be fairly in accord touching the content of the elementary course in French. To meet the demands of this course is the aim of this book, as its title indicates, and it seeks to accomplish little more. It does endeavor, nevertheless, by the character and quantity of material presented, to secure sufficient flexibility to meet, as fully as may be, the diverse conditions that the American educational system presents. Such variations appear in the time allowed by the curriculum, the maturity of the class, the imme diate aim of the work, and the method of the teacher. The exer cises will readily lend themselves to the molding hand of. The instructor who strives to impart a practical command of the living language. The book is equally well adapted to serve in a second ary school and to constitute the nucleus of the first year's work in a college course that does not demand French for entrance. It can be completed in a year and leave ample time for the reading of easy French texts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Grammar: Containing, Besides the Rules of the Language, a Complete Treatise on Prepositions The subject Of Syntax has not been separately treated in this Grammar, because this division is entirely conventional, and is Often troublesome to the student when he is seeking for a rule, causing confusion in his mind, and a loss Of time, which should be carefully avoided. The Verbs will be found conjugated, on the same page, under their four different forms, so as to catch the eye at once, and to enable the pupil to compare them W1th facility; and all the irregular verbs are conjugated, with such remarks and tables, as to ren der this tedious task comparatively easy. All that can be said on Participles has been carefully arranged under different heads, according to the decisions Of the French Academy and Of our best grammarians.
