Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Kate Chopin in the Twenty-First Century update Chopin scholarship, creating pathways, both broad and narrow, for study in a new century. Given Chopin’s atypical literary career and her frequent writing about unconventional themes for her time—such as divorce, infidelity, and suicide—she may have approved such approaches as the essays here suggest. This collection of essays offers readers newer ways of thinking about Chopin’s works. They break away from the familiar trends of the feminist considerations of her work, ranging from her short stories, to her lesser-known novel, At Fault, to her best-known work, The Awakening. Part one introduces interdisciplinary themes for reading “culture” in Chopin, including urban living and theatre as a lens for viewing New Orleans’s social and class stratifications; the importance of music—a central interest of Chopin’s—in her texts; and the cultural relevance of Vogue magazine, where eighteen of Chopin’s stories were first published. Part two identifies important and overlapping concerns of religion, race, class, and gender within the contexts of selected short works. And part three offers fresh readings of The Awakening, using the lens of race, as well as the lens of class to reconsider protagonist Edna Pontellier’s transformation and her dependency upon the “rights” of privilege within a specific cultural context. Together, all of the essays in the collection, by both established and newer scholars, help to usher Chopin’s work into the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music theory is often seen as independent from - even antithetical to - performance. While music theory is an intellectual enterprise, performance requires an intuitive response to the music. But this binary opposition is a false one, which serves neither the theorist nor the performer. In Interpreting Chopin Alison Hood brings her experience as a performer to bear on contemporary analytical models. She combines significant aspects of current analytical approaches and applies that unique synthetic method to selected works by Chopin, casting new light on the composer’s preludes, nocturnes and barcarolle. An extension of Schenkerian analysis, the specific combination of five aspects distinguishes Hood’s method from previous analytical approaches. These five methods are: attention to the rhythms created by pitch events on all structural levels; a detailed accounting of the musical surface; 'strict use' of analytical notation, following guidelines offered by Steve Larson; a continual concern with what have been called 'strategies' or 'premises'; and an exploration of how recorded performances might be viewed in terms of analytical decisions, or might even shape those decisions. Building on the work of such authors as William Rothstein, Carl Schachter and John Rink, Hood’s approach to Chopin’s oeuvre raises interpretive questions of central interest to performers.

This book was released on 2019-03-02 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains 42 works of the great Polish composer Frederic Chopin. It is the third of 3 volumes of the complete works of his and is comprised mainly of scans of pre 1923 sheet music by various music publishers containing original copyright references. Overall it's a warts and all (although we have cleaned up and digitally enhanced as much as possible) reproduction of some very old manuscripts so there are some minor printing imperfections owing to the age and quality of these original manuscripts. There are also some recent 2018 editions type-set and copyright by Ironpower Publishing. We have endeavored to put together in three volumes the most complete collection of Chopin's sheet music available. Contained within this third volume are six Concertos, three Rondos, and 33 various compositions which highlight the brilliance of Chopin. The book is then divided into 3 sections each containing a specific category of Chopin's catalogue of music: - - Concertos &nbs- Rondos - Various Compositions A table of contents at the start allows pianists to find specific compositions easily. Here's a complete list of the compositions: - Concertos Concert No. 1, Variations on Là ci darem la mano, Op. 2 Concert No. 2, Grande fantaisie sur des airs polonais, Op. 13 Concert No. 3, Krakowiak, Op. 14 Concert No. 4, Andante spianato et Grande polonaise brillante, Op. 22 Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 11 Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor, Op. 21 Rondos Rondo à la mazur, Op. 5 Rondo in C Minor, Op. 1 Rondo in E-flat Major, Op. 16 Various Compositions Allegretto Allegretto in F-sharp Major Allegretto de Concert, Op. 46 Andantino, B. 117 Barcarolle F-sharp Major Op. 60 Berceuse in D-flat Major, Op. 57 Bolero, Op. 19 Bourrée Op. "A magisterial portrait." --Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The New York Times Book Review A landmark biography of the Polish composer by a leading authority on Chopin and his time Based on ten years of research and a vast cache of primary sources located in archives in Warsaw, Paris, London, New York, and Washington, D.C., Alan Walker’s monumental Fryderyk Chopin: A Life and Times is the most comprehensive biography of the great Polish composer to appear in English in more than a century. Walker’s work is a corrective biography, intended to dispel the many myths and legends that continue to surround Chopin. Fryderyk Chopin is an intimate look into a dramatic life; of particular focus are Chopin’s childhood and youth in Poland, which are brought into line with the latest scholarly findings, and Chopin’s romantic life with George Sand, with whom he lived for nine years. Comprehensive and engaging, and written in highly readable prose, the biography wears its scholarship lightly: this is a book suited as much for the professional pianist as it is for the casual music lover. Just as he did in his definitive biography of Liszt, Walker illuminates Chopin and his music with unprecedented clarity in this magisterial biography, bringing to life one of the nineteenth century’s most confounding, beloved, and legendary artists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian-American composer and librettist Gian Carlo Menotti composed his first opera in English, The Old Maid and the Thief, in 1939. It was commissioned by NBC as a radio opera (to be performed on air) and was premiered by the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Years later, Menotti adapted a theme from the opera's third scene, transforming and expanding it into an advanced two-movement work for solo piano. The first movement is a lyrical and emotive ricercare, which contains contrapuntal writing, elaborate flourishes, and flamboyant improvisatory gestures. By contrast, the second-movement toccata unfolds in steady, 16th-note perpetual motion with moments of musical humor combined with brilliant pianistic display. The concise work, approximately seven minutes in length, is often used in competitions and recitals. This edition contains helpful fingering and pedaling suggestions, as well as a discussion of form and a brief synopsis of the original opera.

Book excerpt: The complex cultural status of Chopin--he was a native Pole and adopted Frenchman, a male composer writing in "feminine" genres--is the subject of Kallberg's absorbing book. Combining social history, literary theory, musicology, and feminist thought, this book situates Chopin's music within the construct of his somewhat marginal sexual identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1845, Robert Schumann embarked on an intense course of contrapuntal studies. This led him to rent a pedalboard attachment for his piano, inspiring him to write pieces specifically for pedal piano, including these etudes. The great French composer Georges Bizet arranged the Six Etudes in Canon Form, Op.56 for one piano, four hands. These etudes are not simply technical finger exercises like Hanon or Czerny, but true works of art like the Chopin etudes. They make wonderful music while working the muscles of the hands and fingers.
