In this third edition, the competitiveness ranking and simulation study for ASEAN-10 are improved and updated with 121 indicators across four environments. An in-depth assessment of the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) offers important implications for future integration initiatives in the broader Asia Pacific region. Novel empirical frameworks are also applied to provide an estimation of annual agricultural Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth in eight ASEAN economies and to shed light on the drivers of growth in the travel and tourism industry in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Book Synopsis Gender Politics and the Pursuit of Competitiveness in Malaysia by : Juanita Elias
Download or read book Gender Politics and the Pursuit of Competitiveness in Malaysia written by Juanita Elias and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with how the pursuit of national economic competitiveness by states has come to be intertwined with a globalised gender agenda—one in which women and the household economy are seen as ‘untapped’ resources. In many East and Southeast Asian economies, competitiveness and the dangers of the middle-income trap dominate economic policy agendas: states’ commitments to gender equality goals are frequently framed around ‘business case’ logics in which women’s empowerment and women’s increased engagement in the productive economy is linked to the national economic project of building and enhancing competitiveness. This book looks to the case of Malaysia in order to assess how the increasingly dominant view that gender equality is ‘smart economics’ plays out in practice. Drawing upon extensive case study research and interview data, the book hones in on the complex gender politics that are at work within government initiatives that seek to enhance competitiveness via increasing women’s labour force participation, efforts to strengthen marriage and family life, and attempts to boost women’s entrepreneurialism and status within the corporate world. Providing an account of the gender politics at work within ongoing processes of state transformation in Asia, this book will appeal to researchers and students in gender studies, Southeast Asian studies, International Political Economy and public policy.

Book Synopsis Halal Food Certification and Business Performance in Malaysia by : Dr. Mohamed Syazwan Ab Talib
Download or read book Halal Food Certification and Business Performance in Malaysia written by Dr. Mohamed Syazwan Ab Talib and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Halal food certification plays a pivotal role in both consumers food purchase and consumption, and food manufacturers business conducts. The growing trends of Halal food have encouraged firms to implement Halal food certification. Numerous studies have recognized the importance of Halal food certification to consumers rather than Halal food manufacturers. However, Halal food certificate motivations, implementation, and the impact on firm performance, particularly the Malaysia Standard on Halal Food (MS1500:2009) are hardly examined. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the motivations behind Halal food certification and its impact on food manufacturers operational, marketing, and financial performances. Resource-based view and institutional theory underpin the proposed conceptual framework of the study. Five hypotheses were proposed to determine the relationships between certification motivations and firm performances. A quantitative methodology was adopted and data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. A total of 210 Halal-certified food manufacturing companies in Peninsular Malaysia participated in the survey. A partial least square structural equation modeling was conducted for data analysis. A key finding is that both the external and internal motivations positively influence Halal food certificate implementation. Moreover, it was also found that implementing Halal food certification has a positive relationship with firm performance. Further findings indicated that government intervention, consumer demand, industry competition, employee commitment, operation improvement, and marketing return are significant motivators for Halal food certificate implementation. Results also revealed that Halal food certification has a significant impact on the respondents operation, marketing, and financial performances. Theoretically, this study offers insights to the significance of consumer pressure as a normative isomorphism in the institutional theory. Additionally, this study reinforces the understanding of Halal food certification as a significant and relevant strategic tool to remain competitive within the profoundly homogenous and saturated food industry. Practically, the information gained from this research could potentially be beneficial to encourage non-certified firms to become Halal-certified. Future research are encouraged to study the motives and impact of Halal food certification from various countries, as well as apply this research across other industries like pharmaceutical, tourism, or cosmetic.

This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Free trade promotes economic growth through international competition and the efficient allocation of resources while also helping to stabilize food supplies between countries that have an overabundance of product and countries that have a shortage. However, sudden price surges can threaten the social cohesion of developing countries and may lead to malnutrition and stunted growth. Balancing trade liberalization and protectionism is imperative for the provision of food security for all. The Handbook of Research on Globalized Agricultural Trade and New Challenges for Food Security is an essential publication that seeks to improve food security, food independence, and food sovereignty in the conditions of globalized agricultural trade and addresses the contemporary issues of agricultural trade including major commodities and food products traded between major countries, directions of trade, and trends. The book also examines the effects of tariff escalations, administrative restrictions, other forms of trade protectionism on food security, and the emerging trade tensions between major actors such as the US, China, the EU, and Russia. Featuring research on topics including plant fertility, dietary diversity, and protectionism, this book is ideally designed for government officials, policymakers, agribusiness managers, stakeholders, international tradesmen, researchers, industry professionals, academicians, and students.
