This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book comprises chapters integrated around a central theme on college-educated Japanese, Korean, and Chinese women’s orientation to English study. The collection is composed of two parts: (1) East Asian women’s motivation to study in the West and (2) East Asian women’s dream to use English as a career. The first part discusses their international migration as facilitated by factors characteristic of East Asian nations (e.g. middle-class women’s access to advanced education and yet unequal access to professional career) and other factors inherent in each nation (e.g. different social evaluations of women equipped with competitive overseas degrees and English proficiency). The second part sheds light on the dreams and realities of East Asian female adults who, having been avid English learners, aim for "dream jobs" (e.g. interpreters) or have few other career choices but to be re-trained as English specialists or even as Japanese language teachers working abroad. This collection is suitable for any scholar interested in the lives and voices of young educated women who strive to empower themselves with language skills in the seemingly promising neoliberal world that is, however, riddled with ideological contradictions.

Given the importance of teacher quality to student achievement and the key role federal and state governments play in supporting teacher quality, the objectives for this report included examining: (1) the extent that the U.S. Dept. of Education (DoE) funds and coordinates teacher quality programs; (2) studies that DoE conducts on teacher quality and how it provides and coordinates research-related assistance to states and school districts; and (3) challenges to collaboration within states and how DoE helps address those challenges. Book excerpt: This book has been designed by combining the goodness of the original Wren & Martin text, High School Grammar & Composition, and specialized content developed by a panel of competitive examination experts in the area of the English language. The USP is therefore adapting a classical text to the needs of the various admission and recruitment competitive examination aspirants. Its exhaustive coverage ensures that virtually no competitive examination remains untouched. Students preparing for descriptive tests such as UPSC (Compulsory English and General English Papers of Main Exams) and state PCS examinations, Judicial Services examination, Indian Forest Service examination, Statistical Services and many other examinations in which subjective papers/tests are mandatory will find this book immensely useful. The book is also a boon for those students who are preparing for objective tests such as Banking and Insurance, SSC, UPSC preliminary, Defence Services, Law entrance, Business School entrance examinations, and many other admission and recruitment examinations. A unique feature of this book is demonstration of the connectedness of the concepts and their applications visually, with the help of arrows and pointers. The aspirant will also find questions from recent examinations on virtually every page of the book. An index of examination-wise questions has been included so that the aspirant can choose the sections according to the targeted examination and focus more. Topic-wise distribution of questions in English examination papers - both descriptive and objective - will also help aspirants to undertake a very well directed test-prep program using the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban India is undergoing a rapid transformation, which also encompasses the educational sector. Since 1991, this important new market in private English-medium schools, along with an explosion of private coaching centres, has transformed the lives of children and their families, as the attainment of the best education nurtures the aspirations of a growing number of Indian citizens. Set in urban Kerala, the book discusses changing educational landscapes in the South Indian city of Kochi, a local hub for trade, tourism, and cosmopolitan middle-class lifestyles. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, the author examines the way education features as a major way the transformation of the city, and India in general, are experienced and envisaged by upwardly-mobile residents. Schooling is shown to play a major role in urban lifestyles, with increased privatisation representing a response to the educational strategies of a growing and heterogeneous middle class, whose educational choices reflect broader projects of class formation within the context of religious and caste diversity particular to the region. This path-breaking new study of a changing Indian middle class and new relationships with educational institutions contributes to the growing body of work on the experiences and meanings of schooling for youths, their parents, and the wider community and thereby adds a unique, anthropologically informed, perspective to South Asian studies, urban studies and the study of education.
