The Future of Food Business is a valuable tool for them as well as the researchers to find practical solutions to address the tough food safety and quality problems in China.” Jiqin Han Professor of Nanjing Agricultural University, China “With an ever growing population and limited natural resources, The Future of Food Business is an extremely valuable resource for anyone interested in understanding the dynamics of the food supply chain, and what the future of food business holds, particularly at a time when we find ourselves grappling with critical issues which will have a lasting impact on natural resources, the entire food system and how it is governed.” Adil K Sattar Executive Director, K&N's, Pakistan “Marcos develops creative ideas based on facts that are likely to contribute to the shaping of the food sector over the next ten years. His visions are accompanied by innovating tools very helpful for entrepreneurs, young managers and government officials by doing their strategic planning in the food sector. I fully share the epilogue of his book where he outlines the importance and the characteristics of managers that ‘make it happen’.” Hans Peter Baier COB Bongrain/Polenghi, South America “In less than 35 years, Africa's population will double to two billion people, approximately 25% of the global population then. Large areas are richly endowed with land and water, yet Africa remains a net importer of food. Professor Marcos Fava Neves, a very good friend of South Africa and Africa, has again shown, through The Future of Food Business, the way to develop globally competitive value chains that provide sustainable food security solutions and growth for the sector.” John Purchase CEO, Agribusiness Chamber, South Africa “I bought the book The Future of Food Business, from Kinokuniya in Singapore. It was a very unusual literature I ever came across on a book stand and bought it immediately after glancing once. It opened a wider perspective of my business and truly contributed in mapping my business operation and strategic plan.” Frank Tan Marine Life Aquaculture Pte Ltd, Singapore “Considering all the macro-environmental changes that are affecting food companies and agribusiness, Prof. Dr Marcos Fava shows us in a simple and clear way, what are the trends and impacts of this market in the future, and presents solutions, studies and new methods to elaborate an effective Strategic Plan. His insights in this new book are the result of the study of food and agribusiness at theoretical and practical levels. He provides many examples and cases with strong theoretical support leveraged with his experiences as advisor of companies, networks, chains and clusters in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and the US among other countries. As a result, Professor Fava Neves' book, a must-read for students as well as for entrepreneurs, has the makings of a best seller.” Sebastian Senesi and Hernan Palau Professors at University of BuenosAires, Argentina “The challenge that we have to feed the world in the next fifty years is enormous. This year’s Global Food Policy Report highlights the urgency of rural revitalization to address a growing crisis in rural areas. Rural people around the world continue to struggle with food insecurity, persistent poverty and inequality, and environmental degradation. Policies, institutions, and investments that take advantage of new opportunities and technologies, increase access to basic services, create more and better rural jobs, foster gender equality, and restore the environment can make rural areas vibrant and healthy places to live and work. Drawing on recent findings, IFPRI researchers and other distinguished food policy experts consider critical aspects of rural revitalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book combines food security and agricultural competitiveness issues and treat them together. It starts with definitions and evolution of both concepts, followed by reviews on global and regional food security challenges. The book identifies global agricultural trade and competitiveness patterns and uses it as a basis for analysing global food security. Further, the book also identifies countries/regions/products groups and develops a typology of agricultural competitiveness, giving policy lessons and recommendations on how to increase national/regional/global agricultural competitiveness to achieve sustainable food security goals. The motivation behind writing such a book are numerous. First, as researchers interested in both food security and agricultural competitiveness issues, we have always found a gap in the scientific literature in treating the two notions together. Second, as lecturers of various agricultural policy and food security related courses, we have many times been faced with questions related to the competitive positions of different countries and the factors lying behind these positions. Third, as economic advisors, we have been faced with the need to provide clear policy recommendations and lessons on how increase competitiveness and associated food security many times. Such a need is mainly coming from developing country policy and decision makers. We think the book is unique in many ways. First, it provides a consistent analysis of global agricultural trade patterns over 25 years. Second, it analyzes and synthetizes the definitions, concepts and measurement methods of competitiveness, covering a major gap in the current literature. Third, it establishes a link between the analysis of global agricultural competitiveness and food security, which is also an understudied area. Finally, the book provides policy lessons to increase a country’s agricultural competitiveness and food security by identifying its determinants.

Book excerpt: This book's purpose is to shed light on the threats and opportunities arising from the incentives and restrictions of governmental actions which food industry managers discover in their search for profits. The food industry, as defined here, includes farmers, their input suppliers, processors and distributors. This text explores how the private sector reacts to the stimulus of public support measures, rules and regulations which are usually motivated by entirely different ends than those desired within the private sector. No current single model of economic behavior as yet adequately encompasses or quantifies these complex vectors and forces. Management is comprised of many factors, most of which can be identified ex post but few of which can be appraised precisely ex ante. The perceptual processes by which managers respond to governments are influenced by culture, aptitudes, individual and collective goals. details of most government/business relationships are discussed Few openly since management and government officials are, understandably, often reluctant to share the decision tree route by which trust is built and understandings are negotiated. Our text differs from others in that we combine both a theoretical and experiential approach to the subject. The insights provided by the case study material give a more macro and yet realistic view than tha t usually offered elsewhere. We indicate the risks and dynamics of the situations faced by management while also showing the importance and strategic relevance of a solid analytical foundation for managerial purposes.

Book excerpt: Halal food certification plays a pivotal role in both consumers food purchase and consumption, and food manufacturers business conducts. The growing trends of Halal food have encouraged firms to implement Halal food certification. Numerous studies have recognized the importance of Halal food certification to consumers rather than Halal food manufacturers. However, Halal food certificate motivations, implementation, and the impact on firm performance, particularly the Malaysia Standard on Halal Food (MS1500:2009) are hardly examined. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the motivations behind Halal food certification and its impact on food manufacturers operational, marketing, and financial performances. Resource-based view and institutional theory underpin the proposed conceptual framework of the study. Five hypotheses were proposed to determine the relationships between certification motivations and firm performances. A quantitative methodology was adopted and data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. A total of 210 Halal-certified food manufacturing companies in Peninsular Malaysia participated in the survey. A partial least square structural equation modeling was conducted for data analysis. A key finding is that both the external and internal motivations positively influence Halal food certificate implementation. Moreover, it was also found that implementing Halal food certification has a positive relationship with firm performance. Further findings indicated that government intervention, consumer demand, industry competition, employee commitment, operation improvement, and marketing return are significant motivators for Halal food certificate implementation. Results also revealed that Halal food certification has a significant impact on the respondents operation, marketing, and financial performances. Theoretically, this study offers insights to the significance of consumer pressure as a normative isomorphism in the institutional theory. Additionally, this study reinforces the understanding of Halal food certification as a significant and relevant strategic tool to remain competitive within the profoundly homogenous and saturated food industry. Practically, the information gained from this research could potentially be beneficial to encourage non-certified firms to become Halal-certified. Future research are encouraged to study the motives and impact of Halal food certification from various countries, as well as apply this research across other industries like pharmaceutical, tourism, or cosmetic.
