Book excerpt: Excerpt from Competition in the Grain Market of Western Europe In buying and selling grain, the landed price is, of course, the principal con sideration traders take into account. Most of the people interviewed during the course of this study stressed the strong competition in the grain business and asserted that all transactions hinge on price, except for certain minimum requirements of hard wheat. Then, quality is the main consideration. In their discussions, traders talked of the different elements that make up the landed price: The cost of the grain at points of export and import, insurance, shipping charges, delivery points, import duties and taxes, exchange rates. Thus it was clear that traders' preoccupation is with the margin of profit, not with the cost of grain alone. And, since they are in position to handle grain from any exporting country, their concern is not with source but with the elements that make up the landed price and the Operating margins. For example, at the time of this study, U. S. No. 2 Yellow and Eastern European corn were priced for export at the same level, and most of the traders interviewed considered these corns interchangeable. However, since East European corn can be moved cheaply along the Danube and other waterways into southern Germany, Austria, and Italy, u.s. Corn is not fully competitive in these markets. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Crops and Markets, Vol. 33: July 13, 1936 Conditions in June pointed toward smaller outturns not only in the western Mediterranean area and North Africa but also in Scandinavia, the Baltic States, the United Kingdom, and Czechoslovakia. The only important countries expecting to have cr0ps larger than those of a year ago, or'above average, are the Danube countries (below average outturns were obtained in the Basin last year) and.germany. In other countries of central and western Europe, condi tions indicated no marked changes, though it seems improbable that the record wheat cr0ps of Switzerland and Austria will be repeated. The season has been a week or two late in most of central and northern Europe, thus making it pos sible for late June and July weather to have more influence than usual. The weather suddenly became quite favorable for grain crops during the latter part of June over much of Europe, and this has created more Optimism about the out look, particularly in Germany where increasing concern had been evident. The markets in Netherlands and Belgium were very active. In Germany, however, trade has been hindered to some extent by the uncertainty in regard to the ha proposed tariff. The German' government has prolonged to January 81, 1980 the present milling regula tions which require at least fifty per cent German wheat in all milling of Wheat. The European trade has reversed its view on the market outlook and now looks more to North America for Wheat supplies due to the unfavor able developments in Argentina. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark comparative history of Europe and China that examines why the Industrial Revolution emerged in the West The Great Divergence sheds light on one of the great questions of history: Why did sustained industrial growth begin in Northwest Europe? Historian Kenneth Pomeranz shows that as recently as 1750, life expectancy, consumption, and product and factor markets were comparable in Europe and East Asia. Moreover, key regions in China and Japan were no worse off ecologically than those in Western Europe, with each region facing corresponding shortages of land-intensive products. Pomeranz’s comparative lens reveals the two critical factors resulting in Europe's nineteenth-century divergence—the fortunate location of coal and access to trade with the New World. As East Asia’s economy stagnated, Europe narrowly escaped the same fate largely due to favorable resource stocks from underground and overseas. This Princeton Classics edition includes a preface from the author and makes a powerful historical work available to new readers.

Book excerpt: Transregional connections play a fundamental role in the history of East-Central Europe. This volume explores this connectivity by showing how people from eastern and central parts of Europe have positioned themselves within global processes while, in turn, also shaping them. The contributions examine different fields of action such as economy, arts, international regulations and law, development aid, and migration, focusing on the period between the middle of the nineteenth century and the end of the Cold War. The authors uncover spaces of interaction and emphasize that internal and external entanglements have established East-Central Europe as a distinct region. Understanding the connectedness of this subregion is stimulating for the historiography of East-Central Europe as it is for the field of global history.

Book excerpt: In an increasingly global world, societies are being provisioned from a bewildering array of sources as new countries and new food commodities are drawn into international markets. Globalising Food provides an innovative contribution to the area of political economy of agriculture, food and consumption through a revealing investigation of the globalisation and restructuring of localised agricultural sectors and food systems. The book draws on new theoretical perspectives and wide-ranging case studies from Britain, the USA, India, South Africa, New Zealand and Latin America. The key themes addresses range from giant multinational food corporations, rural industrialisation and World Bank policies, to the regulation of pollution, labour relations, urban food politics and environmental sustainability. Globalising Food offers important insights into the problems, consequences and limits of the industrialisation of agriculture and the provisioning of food in a global world as we approach the new millenium.
