Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author presents in this single volume a complete summary of philosophy and its history, specially designed for the student majoring in philosophy or the seminarian who needs philosophical knowledge for his work in theology. The book is keyed to the New Catholic Encyclopedia, where fuller expositions and bibliographies of the topics treated may be found. The work is divided into three parts, the first two being systematic and the third historical. Part I summarizes the basic content of what is called scholastic philosophy, logic, natural philosophy, psychology, metaphysics, epistemology, natural theology, and ethics. Part II surveys the more recent philosophies of the specialized disciplines, that is, the various humanities and sciences, from language and art to social and political thought. Part III gives a synoptic account of the history of philosophy, from the beginnings of the discipline to its most contemporary developments. The presentation is simple and clear, yet it is accurate and completely authoritative.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian difference to the legal order is not to be found in any religious test or requirement of conformity, but in the Christian character of legal institutions. Stahl accomplishes this by making institutions rather than actions the cornerstone of law. Law is a general rule, not a specific command; and institutions, not persons, are its primary object. Persons operate within the framework established by law, but that law is an external, objective framework, not an internal, subjective one. The right of the person and the rights of persons are established and defended precisely by this objectively Christian order. Therefore, what is Christian about this legal order is the principles, the law-ideas, upon which it is based, not the level of faith of those living within it. This Christian orientation also demands a respect for the inheritance of the nation, conservation of its received institutions and laws. Law is rooted in custom and tradition, supplemented through legislation. The courts are bound to the law as the expression of the historical people, not ephemeral public opinion. The major error of modern legal philosophy is its natural-rights orientation, which makes law and the state into the creatures of individual choice, in which individuals through a social contract choose to leave the “state of nature” and form a government and a set of laws under which to be ruled. This whole approach is oblivious to the fact that human social order, being an inheritance, is a higher order transcending individual choice. Modern legal philosophy compounds its error by making natural law into a directly applicable legal standard, or alternatively by abandoning the law to the play of interests, cutting off any influence from higher principles. For its part, natural law lacks objectivity, universal recognition, and publicity in the sense that it can be known by everyone ahead of time; it therefore cannot be enforced by the state. In fact, to do so is to establish opinion and thus injustice as law. God's divine order is the archetype of law, but it is not directly applicable as law. In fact, God commands that the law as it stands is to be obeyed, regardless of its correspondence to the higher principles of law. Human freedom under God is the freedom to crystallize and make concrete those God-revealed principles of law as a positive legal order. In this second edition of Principles of Law, there is no difference in content as compared with the first, but the text has been corrected where necessary and improved where appropriate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Principles may well be regarded as the main part of philosophy. They are among the major discoveries of philosophy, condensing in themselves much philosophical inquiry and insight. They are the starting point of much philosophical discussion. They are the base for exposition, for proof, and for criticism. They serve the student and the reader of philosophy much as legal maxims serve jurists and as proverbs serve the people. They are for scholastic philosophers the household truth of their tradition. This book includes not only all principles of scholastic philosophy but also exercises to apply the principles to several occasions. The book is useful for all students and professionals in philosophy.

The end at which it aims is to demonstrate the existence of God, to establish the principal divine attributes, to vindicate God’s relation to the world as that of the Creator to the creature, and, finally, to throw what light it can on the action of divine providence in regard of man and on the problem of evil.
