Book excerpt: Czech it Out: Czech American Biography Sourcebook provides a wealth of information on a variety of sources relating to biographical information on notable Americans with Czech roots. Besides the national figures, also included are information sources on significant individuals at the state, regional, and local levels. Beyond that, we saw it fit to also incorporate ethnic information sources, which frequently contain a wealth of information on pioneer settlers and individuals active at the community level. Having in mind the interests of genealogists in individual families and their descendents, a listing has also been provided on family histories and genealogies. Even though Czechs have been living in the US practically since colonial times, no composite biographical dictionary exists about the accomplished Czech Americans. Biographical information about them is scattered in a plethora of sources, which are difficult to find and some are not readily accessible. The present author, who, literally, devoted several decades of his life to the study of Czech-American history, has canvassed hundreds of sources at national and local levels to identify, not only notable individuals but also pioneer settlers who played a significant role in the growth and development of the US. This publication should fill a great void in literature until a comprehensive biographical compendium about Czech Americans has been written.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Richard A. Serrano's new book American Endurance: Buffalo Bill, the Great Cowboy Race of 1893, and the Vanishing Wild West is history, mystery, and Western all rolled into one. In June 1893, nine cowboys raced across a thousand miles of American prairie to the Chicago World's Fair. For two weeks they thundered past angry sheriffs, governors, and Humane Society inspectors intent on halting their race. Waiting for them at the finish line was Buffalo Bill Cody, who had set up his Wild West Show right next to the World's Fair that had refused to allow his exhibition at the fair. The Great Cowboy Race occurred at a pivotal moment in our nation's history: many believed the frontier was settled and the West was no more. The Chicago World's Fair represented the triumph of modernity and the end of the cowboy age. Except no one told the cowboys. Racing toward Buffalo Bill Cody and the gold-plated Colt revolver he promised to the first to reach his arena, nine men went on a Wild West stampede from tiny Chadron, Nebraska, to bustling Chicago. But at the first thud of hooves pounding on Chicago's brick pavement, the race devolved into chaos. Some of the cowboys shipped their horses part of the way by rail, or hired private buggies. One had the unfair advantage of having helped plan the route map in the first place. It took three days, numerous allegations, and a good old Western showdown to sort out who was first to Chicago, and who won the Great Cowboy Race.

In October, 1877, Col. Martin bought one-half of the Nebraska Eagle: afterwards sold his interest and founded the Argus in May, 1880. During his journalistic life he had written a continued story--"The Conflict; Love or Money"--and published in the Eagle and the Argus, which is remarkable for its great number of chapters and the liberal comments it received at the hands of the Nebraska newspaper men. His wife died April 16, 1887, of congestive chills, leaving three daughters and one son. In the tall of 1886 South Sioux City was laid out along the east banks of Silver Lake, adjoining his old...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Dixon County, Nebraska: Its Pioneers, Settlement, Growth and Development, and Its Present Condition Its Villages, Townships, Enterprises and Leading Citizens; Together With Portraits and Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men, Incidents of Pioneer Life, Etc The following book Of the county's history, early incidents, legends, Stories, etc., hopes to meet with approval. That there are some errors, there can be no doubt, but the bulk is as correct as the memories of Old settlers will permit. The book is much larger than it was expected to be. The material on hand would have made a thousand pages, and hence to bring the Size within reasonable bounds, it was necessary to abridge and cut down whenever it could be done. Especially so in our notices of the citizens of the county, which we have been compelled to Shorten to one fourth the length we had intended.
