Auf Zuführung ganz neuen, bis jetzt dem musikalischen Fachhistoriker unbekannten Materials erhebt das Buch um so weniger Anspruch, als dasselbe ja nicht für den gelehrten Kenner der Geschichte geschrieben ist, wenn demselben auch nicht entgehen dürfte, dass die neuesten historischen Forschungen und deren Ergebnisse uberall berücksichtigt werden sind und durch gewissenhafte Anführung der Quel len und Hülfswerke, welche der Verfasser zu seiner Arbeit benutzte, denjenigen, welche Musse und Interesse für die Sache haben, Gelegenheit gegeben ist, dieselben selbst zur Hand zu nehmen. Da vorliegendes Compendium, wie schon bemerkt, sich nicht an den historischen Fachmann wendet, so musste der Verfasser es sich angelegen sein lassen, den in mancher Beziehung etwas trockenen Stoff in eine moglichst pcpu läre und gefällige Darstellungsweise zu kleiden, ohne sich übrigens von der Sache selbst zu entfernen und gewisse Seitengange einzuschlagen, da an Stelle der historischen Erzählung die schillernde Phrase, die schöngeistige Red seligkeit tritt, vielmehr ging der Verfasser von dem festen Grundsatz aus, dass die Geschichte fur ernstdenkende Kopfe ist, welche nicht unterhalten sondern belehrt sein wollen.
