La edición, estricta y exenta, de la versión primigenia de la contribución teórica de Milá y Fontanals, pretende dos cosas: subrayar el singular relieve de la obra y, segundo, culminar el proyecto de edición de la producción estética del autor situando este texto individualmente como documento de valor histórico y a disposición del lector interesado junto a su par de Krause y el conjunto desarrollado por Milá como Estética y Teoría literaria. El hecho, clave para la historia de la disciplina en nuestro país, consiste en que las obras de Milá y Krause-Giner de los Riós describen la dobre línea definitoria de la historia de la disciplina en España. Esto es, de una parte, el texto inicial de Milá y sus desarrollos posteriores, clave de la Escuela Catalana de Estética, a los que se ha de sumar prodigiosamente la Historia de las Ideas Estéticas en España de Menéndez Pelayo, principal ideador, aún no reconocido, de ese género intelectual decisivo para el siglo XX; de otra parte, el Compendio de Krause-Giner y sus correspondientes desarrollos en el ámbito de la Institución Libre de Enseñanza, configuran las dos grandes corrientes estéticas que situaron y en liza tanto el marco teórico general de la Estética española como su proyección y establecimiento académico en los distintos niveles de enseñanza. Es un proceso que abarca un siglo de duración, desde mediados del XIX hasta la guerra.
