Book excerpt: Comparisons have been made of the results of the detection performance of a space-based radar (SBR) system using uniformly-illuminated circular apertures, and the same apertures with Taylor weighting applied. From the studies, it is shown that the detection performance of an SBR system can be greatly improved with the application of the latter form of weighting. For the comparative studies, two antenna systems with the same physical dimensions were used, (1) a Taylor-weighted circular aperture for transmitting and receiving, and (2) a uniformly-illuminated circular aperture for transmitting, and the same aperture but with Taylor weighting applied for receiving. These comparative studies show that when antenna system (1) was used, 45.0 dB Taylor weighting was required in order to achieve the optimum SBR detection performance whereas for antenna system (2), 55.0 dB was required to give the same detection performance.

Airborne radars have provided reliable detection of moving targets for many years. Recent technological advancements have allowed the deployment of radar systems in space to improve global coverage. Additional radar performance benefits from space-based platforms are made possible with clusters of collaborative microsatellites. Using quantitative capability metrics, specifically the probability of detection and the minimum detectable velocity, the performance of the radar system can be modeled to enable effective and unbiased comparison of candidate system architectures. A design study based on the space-based GMTI radar reference mission for the Air Force's TechSat 21 program was conducted to identify viable system design configurations that satisfy specific radar performance requirements. A comprehensive analysis of the cost, reliability, and performance considerations for the complete TechSat 21 system is proposed.

Book excerpt: A computer model was used to make a detailed analysis of the clutter spectra received by real aperture Space-Based Radars orbiting over different types of terrain. The influence of terrain on L-band SBR detection performance has also been studied. It was found that the clutter spectra tend to become narrower as the grazing ange of the antenna increases but that they broaden as the antenna points progressively more away from the direction of motion of the satellite. The interference caused by the clutter background is progressively higher for ice covered ground but smaller for a snow-covered terrain and the smallest for an ocean background. The minimum detectable velocities of the SBR were found to vary by a factor of up to three according to the terrain type. (Canada).
