Book excerpt: Data from two research projects were analyzed to evaluate the suitability of seven empirical workability test methods for self-consolidating concrete (SCC)--namely, the column segregation test, J-ring test, L-box test, penetration apparatus test, sieve stability test, slump flow test, and V-funnel test. The results of these empirical tests were compared to rheometer measurements. Test methods were evaluated based on (1) the extent to which each method independently indicated filling ability, passing ability, or segregation resistance and (2) the ease and simplicity with which each test method can be used on a routine basis in the laboratory or the field. The data set consisted of 286 SCC mixtures incorporating a range of materials, mixture proportions, and workability characteristics. It was determined that the slump flow test should be used for filling ability, the J-ring test for passing ability, and the column segregation test or sieve stability test for segregation resistance.

Book excerpt: Dear Colleagues, We are pleased to organize the Sixth International RILEM Symposium on SCC and the Fourth North-American Conference on the Design and Use of SCC, held on Sept 26-29, 2010 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The RILEM series of symposia started in 1999 in Stockholm, followed by Tokyo in 2001, Reykjavik in 2003, Chicago in 2005, and Ghent in 2007 with a steadily increasing number of papers, participants, and interest from across the globe. Due to the growing success of SCC, regional conferences have been organized, such as the North-American Conference on the Design and Use of SCC held in Chicago in 2002, 2005, and 2008; the International Symposium on Design, Performance and Use of SCC held nd in Changsa, China in 2005 and in Beijing, China in 2009; as well as the 2 International Conference on Advances in Concrete Technology in the Middle East: SCC held in Abu Dhabi in 2009. It can be concluded that these regional Conferences and Symposia were highly successful and reached a far more international audience than anticipated. Nearly 100 papers were submitted for these proceedings from which the International Scientific Committee selected 37 contributions covering a wide range of timely and original subjects from around the world. We would like to acknowledge the input of the International Scientific Committee for providing critical input to guarantee high quality of these peer-reviewed proceedings. We invite you to explore a wealth of information in the electronic proceedings.

This book was released on 2020 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Setting time and rheology of mixtures are among the most important features in new generation concretes such as self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and can have a great impact on the behavior of fresh concrete. Therefore, introducing new methods for determining these parameters has always been one of the main concerns. In this research, we tried to determine a relationship between the measured setting time from the ASTM C403/C403M-08, Standard Test Method for Time of Setting of Concrete Mixtures by Penetration Resistance Method , and the electrical resistance (ER) method, as well as the rheological parameters, including dynamic and static yield stress. Also, a new method for determining the setting time and concrete thixotropy--called the plate test method--is introduced and validated. The results indicated that the ER method is an accurate one in determining the initial and final setting time of SCC mixtures. Concrete mixtures with higher yield stress (static and dynamic) have a shorter setting time. Investigating the results indicated that the higher the static yield stress mean of the mixture in the time period of thixotropic behavior, the shorter the initial setting time. Therefore, increasing static yield stress is associated with a reduction in the setting time. In the case of dynamic yield stress, similar events occurred with static yield stresses, and an increase in this stress and its growth rate was associated with a reduction in the initial setting time. Furthermore, the results obtained by the new method (plate method), along with the results of rheology parameters measured by the rheometer device, indicated that the difference between results was in the range of 4 to 11 %. Also, the difference in the setting time obtained from the plate method in comparison with the penetration resistance method was 9 % at maximum. These results indicated that the plate test method has an acceptable accuracy in measuring the setting time and thixotropy.

Book excerpt: Fresh concrete is generally featured in publications on concrete technology where the focus is often on fundamental rheology or diverse research methods, or the standards describe the tests but do not provide practical advice on interpretation of the results. This book aims to fill the gap between highly scientific and fundamental works and the many fragmented test specifications. It summarises the existing knowledge on the properties of fresh concrete in a form accessible to practicing engineers and concrete technologists. It includes a manual of practical tests which cover both the standard tests in major countries and new tests specifically applicable to site testing. The testing equipment required and the procedures are described in sufficient detail for the tests to be carried out, with references to selected national standards when compliance with specific conditions applicable in those countries is required. Particular attention is paid to properties of special fresh concrete mixes which are increasingly used in practical construction. The work will be of interest to engineers and others involved in the research, development, design and execution of concrete construction, including those working in EEC countries.

Book excerpt: In spite of the increasing use and demand for lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), there is still a lack of adequate explanations to understand the mechanisms responsible for the strength and durability properties of LWAC. This book is written to give an overall picture of LWAC, from the historical background, aggregate production, proportioning and production of concrete, to applications in structures. Physical properties and chemical durability are described in detail. The physical properties include density, strength, shrinkage, and elasticity. Chemical durability includes resistance to acids, chloride ingress, carbonation, and freeze-thaw resistance. Fire resistance is also included, which is seldom considered, but is a very important aspect of the safety of the structure. Microstructure development and its relation to the durability properties of LWAC generally are not highlighted in the literature. The development of bonds, the microstructure with different binder systems, and different types of lightweight aggregates are explained. They show how lightweight aggregate concrete differs from normal weight concrete. The chapters on chloride ingress and freeze-thaw resistance are detailed because of the use of LWAC in offshore construction. The economical aspects of using LWAC are also reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that although the cost of LWAC is high, the total cost of construction has to be considered, including the cost of transport, reinforcement, etc. When these are considered then LWAC becomes cheaper and attractive. The life cycle cost of the concrete is another consideration for calculating long-term savings on maintenance costs.

Book excerpt: Rheology, defined as the science of deformation and flow of matter, is a multidisciplinary scientific field, covering both fundamental and applied approaches. The study of rheology includes both experimental and computational methods, which are not mutually exclusive. Its practical importance embraces many processes, from daily life, like preparing mayonnaise or spreading an ointment or shampooing, to industrial processes like polymer processing and oil extraction, among several others. Practical applications include also formulations and product development. Following a successful first volume, we are now launching this second volume to continue to present the latest advances in the fields of experimental and computational rheology applied to the most diverse classes of materials (foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, polymers and biopolymers, multiphasic systems, and composites) and processes.

Book excerpt: The State-of-the-Art Report of RILEM Technical Committee 228-MPS on Mechanical properties of Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) summarizes an extensive body of information related to mechanical properties and mechanical behaviour of SCC. Due attention is given to the fact that the composition of SCC varies significantly. A wide range of mechanical properties are considered, including compressive strength, stress-strain relationship, tensile and flexural strengths, modulus of elasticity, shear strength, effect of elevated temperature, such as fire spalling and residual properties after fire, in-situ properties, creep, shrinkage, bond properties and structural behaviour. A chapter on fibre-reinforced SCC is included, as well as a chapter on specialty SCC, such as light-weight SCC, heavy-weight SCC, preplaced aggregate SCC, special fibre reinforced SCC and underwater concrete.
