Book excerpt: Results are presented of a study to examine the rel tio ships b acc racy and cos i m n our, cal ndar time and dollars, in deter ing this transient heat flow for two hypothetical re-entry vehicles. Accuracy and cost information were obtained for analytical methods: h nd calculations, digital computers, differential analyzers, and passive el ment analogues; and for experimental methods: various size panels, half and full size vehicles, and vehicle c mpartments. Results are presented as curves of accuracy as a function of cost. A general heat transfer digital computer program provided the most accuracy for the least cost. The other computing techni ues rank in the following ord r: differential analyzer, passive element analogue, and hand calculations. T HE DIFFERENTIAL ANALYZER IS THE BEST METHOD FOR PARAMETER STUDIES WHERE A LARGE NUMBER OF RUNS IS EXPECTED. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to develop and demonstrate the validity of an analytical model for predicting the transient temperature response in honeycomb sandwich panels subjected to variable heat loads on one or both faces. A one-dimensional analysis was developed which employs the ordinary heat balance considering heat transfer through the panel by conduction, convection, and radiation. The finite (forward) difference technique is employed for solving the heat balance equations. Honeycomb panels of various materials, cell shapes, and dimensions were subjected to a variety of heat loads and their thermal responses were recorded. The predicted thermal responses for these panels, obtained with the analytical model, were in good agreement with the test data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NASA commissioned the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) to conduct a thorough review of both the technical and the organizational causes of the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia and her crew on February 1, 2003. The accident investigation that followed determined that a large piece of insulating foam from Columbia's external tank (ET) had come off during ascent and struck the leading edge of the left wing, causing critical damage. The damage was undetected during the mission. The Columbia accident was not survivable. After the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) investigation regarding the cause of the accident was completed, further consideration produced the question of whether there were lessons to be learned about how to improve crew survival in the future. This investigation was performed with the belief that a comprehensive, respectful investigation could provide knowledge that can protect future crews in the worldwide community of human space flight. Additionally, in the course of the investigation, several areas of research were identified that could improve our understanding of both nominal space flight and future spacecraft accidents. This report is the first comprehensive, publicly available accident investigation report addressing crew survival for a human spacecraft mishap, and it provides key information for future crew survival investigations. The results of this investigation are intended to add meaning to the sacrifice of the crew's lives by making space flight safer for all future generations.

Book Synopsis Facing the Heat Barrier by : T. A. Heppenheimer
Download or read book Facing the Heat Barrier written by T. A. Heppenheimer and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonics is the study of flight at speeds where aerodynamic heating dominates the physics of the problem. It is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is this important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric reentry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline, but work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well.
