Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of a numerical and a physical model study of wave response of the small-boat harbor at Barcelona, New York, are presented and compared. The numerical model used was HARBD, a monochromatic linear wave model. Both monochromatic and irregular waves were considered, and wave superposition was used to investigate harbor response to irregular waves. Wave records from the physical model tests matched the intended wave forcing conditions near the wave generator. Wave records in and around the harbor, however, usually showed the effects of nonlinearity and in some instances exhibited wave grouping and the effects of breaking and overtopping. Hence, even for the monochromatic tests, the water surface oscillations at each gage in the harbor were characterized by a distribution of wave heights. Procedures were developed for displaying information about the irregularity of physical model wave records. These procedures provide a rational means for comparing numerical and physical model results. Using them, engineering judgement can be used to assess the nature of irregular waves in the physical model and to assess, for a given application, the appropriateness of the linear theory assumption of the numerical model. The study was conducted as a revision and extension of previous studies (Lillycrop et al. 1993, Thompson and Hadley 1 994b) to assess the wave response of various alternative modification plans for the harbor. This report - is focused on the determination of an optimal design plan which would provide the harbor with adequate protection from the incident wave climate. Information provided in earlier reports is referenced in this report, but generally not repeated.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "An investigation was undertaken to evaluate numerical models that can be used to predict harbor response to long-period wave excitation for both conventional harbors with deep drafts and artificial offshore ports in deep water. Numerical models using finite difference, hybrid finite element, and Lee's method solutions are discussed and compared with analytical solutions, hydraulic model data, and prototype field data. The hybrid finite element method of solution is shown to adequately predict periods of resonant peaks and modal water-surface elevation patterns in conventional and offshore harbors. Computational time requirements of this numerical model are shown to be sufficiciently low to make resonant response calculations economically feasible for a wide range of incident wave periods. Use of the hybrid finite element method to evaluate deep draft harbor design or modification and to aid hydraulic model studies of harbor oscillations is discussed."
