Book Synopsis Screening of Musa Germplasm for Resistance and Tolerance to Nematodes by : Paul R. Speijer
Download or read book Screening of Musa Germplasm for Resistance and Tolerance to Nematodes written by Paul R. Speijer and published by IITA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In most regions of the world, nematodes are recognized as important pests of bananas. Because banana nematodes attack the root and/or corm tissues, plant growth and yield are affected. The objective of these technical guidelines is to stimulate interest in nematode resistance and tolerance screening in bananas, and toprovide a methodology for carrying out such screening: plant material, nematode inoculum, screening experiments in pots or in the field, nematode reproduction assessment, and damage assessment.

Download or read book Bananas and Plantains written by S. Gowen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-16 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a field of mature bananas, plants can be seen at all stages of vegetative growth and fruit maturity, providing a fascination for anyone who has an interest in growing crops. Banana farmers in the tropics can harvest fruit every day of the year. The absence of seasonality in production is an advantage, in that it provides a continuity of carbohydrate to meet dietary needs as well as a regular source of income, a feature that perhaps has been under-estimated by rural planners and agricultural strategists. The burgeoning interest in bananas in the last 20 years results from the belated realization that Musa is an under-exploited genus, notwithstanding the fact that one genetically narrow group, the Cavendish cultivars, supply a major export commodity second only to citrus in terms of the world fruit trade. International research interest in the diversity of fruit types has been slow to develop, presumably because bananas and plantains have hitherto been regarded as a reliable backyard source of dessert fruit or starch supplying the needs of the household, and in this situation relatively untroubled by pests, diseases or agronomic problems.
Book Synopsis Plant Cell and Tissue Culture by : Indra K. Vasil
Download or read book Plant Cell and Tissue Culture written by Indra K. Vasil and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Cell and Tissue Culture gives an exhaustive account of plant cell culture and genetic transformation, including detailed chapters on all major field and plantation crops. Part A presents a comprehensive coverage of all necessary laboratory techniques for the initiation, nutrition, maintenance and storage of plant cell and tissue cultures, including discussions on these topics, as well as on morphogenesis and regeneration, meristem and shoot tip culture, plant protoplasts, mutant cell lines, variation in tissue cultures, isogenic lines, fertilization control, cryopreservation, transformation, and the production of secondary metabolites. Part B then proceeds into detail on the specific in vitro culture of specific crops, including cereals, legumes, vegetables, potatoes, other roots and tubers, oilseeds, temperate fruits, tropical fruits, plantation crops, forest trees and ornamentals. Plant Cell and Tissue Culture is, and is likely to remain, the laboratory manual of choice, as well as a source of inspiration and a guide to all workers in the field.

Book excerpt: Bananas and plantains are major fruit crops in the tropics and subtropics, making a vital contribution to the economies of many countries. In the last 15 years, substantial changes have occurred in banana production, among them the increased importance of fungal and viral diseases and their serious impact on Cavendish export cultivars, smallholder plantains and cooking bananas. Changes in production systems such as protected greenhouse cultivation, organic, fair-trade and integrated cultivation and their respective certification schemes have also become prominent. This book provides an accessi.

Book Synopsis Adoption of agricultural innovations by smallholder farmers in the context of HIV/AIDS by : Faith N. Nguthi
Download or read book Adoption of agricultural innovations by smallholder farmers in the context of HIV/AIDS written by Faith N. Nguthi and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using tissue-cultured technology is a potentially important way for smallholder banana farmers to improve their yields and income. In the situation of the impoverishing effects of high HIV/AIDS-prevalence in a rural banana-farming community, this applies even more. The research documented in this book examines the balance between required inputs and potential benefits of applying the tissue-cultured technology among HIV/AIDS-affected and non-affected households in Maragua district, Central Kenya, using a livelihood approach. The results show that adoption of the technology and its continued use differs according to the resources endowment of the farming households. Lack of financial and physical capital, notably a water tank, inhibits adoption, irrespective of HIV/AIDS-status. However, households headed by elderly females dominate among the poor households and the HIV/AIDS-affected households. This illustrates how HIV/AIDS interfaces with poverty and, thereby, indirectly with the feasibility of sustainable technology adoption. The research also shows that livelihood decisions and strategies of farming households are influenced by land tenure status (having title deeds or not) and labour constraints at the household level. The latter arise as a consequence of HIV/AIDS-related morbidity and mortality.
