This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most globally influential cities such as New York, London and Tokyo are also appraised as financial centers. In addition, many emerging countries try to promote their capital cities as regional or global financial centers, and the competition to become a successful financial capital is getting tougher. This is because the financial services industry not only is a high-value-added industry itself but also can have huge effects on other service industries like accounting, consulting and legal services. Besides, powerful financial capitals can lead the economic growth of their countries by attracting foreign investment or entrances by global enterprises. Recognizing that its level of financial-sector development paled in comparison to those of other developed countries in spite of its status as the world's 12th largest economy, South Korea also initiated and implemented a development plan to promote financial industries as a new driving force for national economic growth. This thesis analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the City of Seoul as a financial center compared to other comparable Asian cities, using four indices which global institutions or presses publish periodically.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is distinctive among current studies on this topic. The Chinese economy has entered a period of transformation, which has brought changes to the finance market and consumer habits. For a long time, topics such as monetary policy, reform, financial risks and so forth have been the focus. But there have been few studies of those aspects of the consumer finance market that are directly related to private consumption. Studies on this topic, to which this book contributes, are necessary for understanding the current economic situation in China. This is a full-scale comparative study of consumer finance in China, Japan and South Korea, and will draw lessons for China in this area from the experience of the other two countries.

Download or read book Finance in Asia written by Qiao Liu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia’s demand for second-generation financial institutions and markets needs to be met in order for the region’s further development to be sustained. This book provides a compelling, fact-based assessment of current practices and regulations in Asia’s financial institutions and markets and carefully documents the exciting opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in the region’s financial systems. This book differs in design from typical treatments of financial institutions and markets because its focus is on Asia rather than using the US model (in terms of market configurations or products) as a benchmark, and its takes a contemporary and forward-looking view of financial markets. Examples of practice from Asia are used to illustrate major accepted themes in finance and financial regulation. To the extent that Asia’s main economies share characteristics that are distinct, for example, in the relationship between government and the banking sector, or in aspects of corporate governance, the book will discuss the consequences for market operation and intermediation. The book’s carefully structured facts and rigorously argued analysis carry important implications both for students in business and law and for professionals new to financial markets in Asia. It will change the way that Asian financial markets and institutions is taught in universities as well as provide a valuable resource for professionals working in finance in Asia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two Crises, Different Outcomes examines East Asian policy reactions to the two major crises of the last fifteen years: the global financial crisis of 2008–9 and the Asian financial crisis of 1997–98. The calamity of the late 1990s saw a massive meltdown concentrated in East Asia. In stark contrast, East Asia avoided the worst effects of the Lehman Brothers collapse, incurring relatively little damage when compared to the financial devastation unleashed on North America and Europe. Much had changed across the intervening decade, not least that China rather than Japan had become the locomotive of regional growth, and that the East Asian economies had taken numerous steps to buffer their financial structures and regulatory regimes. This time Asia avoided disaster; it bounced back quickly after the initial hit and has been growing in a resilient fashion ever since. The authors of this book explain how the earlier financial crisis affected Asian economies, why government reactions differed so widely during that crisis, and how Asian economies weathered the Great Recession. Drawing on a mixture of single-country expertise and comparative analysis, they conclude by assessing the long-term prospects that Asian countries will continue their recent success.
