Book excerpt: While most children learn to read fairly well, there remain many young Americans whose futures are imperiled because they do not read well enough to meet the demands of our competitive, technology-driven society. This book explores the problem within the context of social, historical, cultural, and biological factors. Recommendations address the identification of groups of children at risk, effective instruction for the preschool and early grades, effective approaches to dialects and bilingualism, the importance of these findings for the professional development of teachers, and gaps that remain in our understanding of how children learn to read. Implications for parents, teachers, schools, communities, the media, and government at all levels are discussed. The book examines the epidemiology of reading problems and introduces the concepts used by experts in the field. In a clear and readable narrative, word identification, comprehension, and other processes in normal reading development are discussed. Against the background of normal progress, Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children examines factors that put children at risk of poor reading. It explores in detail how literacy can be fostered from birth through kindergarten and the primary grades, including evaluation of philosophies, systems, and materials commonly used to teach reading.

Reflecting these developments, this new bibliography expands current notions of what comparative reading is, or ought to be. It lists and categorizes research efforts made throughout the world, giving special emphasis to the tendency to conceive of the reading process in interdisciplinary terms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purposes of this qualitative, multi-case study were to (1) investigate how students with a specific learning disability (SLD) constructed meaning from print when assessed using naturally occurring texts (NOcT), (2) investigate how this same group of learners constructed meaning from print when assessed using traditional, leveled passages (TLP), and (3) identify any similarities or differences that emerged in the meaning construction patterns of two students with SLD. This study included eight case studies, four third-grade students and four fourth-grade students. All cases had an individualized education plan (IEP) with reading goals and were reading below grade level according to district curriculum materials. Data were collected using documents, assessments, and interviews. To deepen the understanding of the findings from these data sources, data were analyzed from three additional sources: (a) reading accuracy and fluency data, (b) student interview responses, and (c) field notes recorded during and immediately after each individual assessment. The constant comparative method of qualitative analysis was used to analyze the data. As conceptual categories emerged from the analysis, the evidence was sorted into these categories. Comparison of the categories to other categories resulted in theory that is grounded in the findings and the context of this study. Data analysis revealed three major findings: (1) the NOcT and TLP served different purposes, (2) schemata and interest played a critical role in the meaning-making process, and (3) the role of schemata and topic were critically important during oral reading assessments. The findings demonstrated that students with SLD used the semantic, syntactic and graphophonic cueing systems to predict potential meanings. The new theory that was grounded in the data suggests that students with SLD are able to interact with different texts based on their understanding of the process of reading, and they can make word-level predictions using the language cueing systems.

Book excerpt: In an attempt to locate studies from various cultures and nations that would provide useful sources for university courses in comparative reading, this booklet provides annotated sources of international reading studies, as well as three articles on comparative reading. Following an introduction, the first part of the booklet begins with an article on the value of comparative reading. This is followed by the bibliography, which is divided into sections on (1) methodology of comparative education and comparative reading, (2) studies and descriptive reports, and (3) reviews and descriptions of the state of the art regarding research and/or the teaching of reading. The second part of the booklet contains two viewpoints on university courses in comparative reading, including an example of a cross-national study on primary reading. (HTH)
