Book Synopsis Hybrid Maize in Relation to Planting Density and Nitrogen Levels by : Dharma Raj Dawadi
Download or read book Hybrid Maize in Relation to Planting Density and Nitrogen Levels written by Dharma Raj Dawadi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maize (Zey mays L.) is the second staple food crop after Rice and produced in 3 distinct agro-climatic zones i.e. Terai and inner Terai (less than 900 masl), Mid-Hills (900-1800 masl) and High-Hills (more than 1800 masl) respectively in Nepal. Although, hybrid maize has great prospect to increase the production and productivity, less plant densities & poor nitrogen management are the major yield reducing factors in the developing world (less than 3 t ha-1) as compared to industrialized countries (more than 8 t ha-1). Most of the farmers in developing countries are using higher amount of N-fertilizers haphazardly in hybrid maize which leads to the soil degradation in near future. Because of less information regarding nitrogen requirements and planting adjustments for hybrid maize, there is urgent need to identify its proper production practices & management technology. Therefore, this work was carried out to determine the optimum densities and nitrogen levels for hybrid maize during winter season with reference to its growth, yield and yield attributes. This book is greatly useful for researcher, agronomist, development workers, academic and students working in the field of agriculture research and development.
Book Synopsis The Use of Nitrogen Fertilizer and Plant Density Treatments to Predict the Long-term Performance of Hybrids in the Maritime Maize Recommendation Trials by : Baluswamy Krishnan

This book was released on 2001 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent maize hybrids perform better than old ones. This improved performance of modern hybrids is due in part to their stress tolerance. It may be possible to identify high-yielding, broadly adapted cultivars by assessing their performance in stress environments. To test this hypothesis, fourteen recommended maize hybrids were tested in four different agronomic treatment levels (standard density + standard fertilizer, standard density + low fertilizer, high density + standard fertilizer and high density + low fertilizer) in 2000 at two locations in Nova Scotia, each with two replications. The long-term means of these cultivars in the Maritimes Maize Recommendation Trial, which are highly unbalanced over years and are analysed using residual maximum likelihood (REML) to permit comparisons among cultivars tested in different years, were considered as their true means. Those means were regressed on means obtained from the different agronomic treatments to compare the predictive ability of the different agronomic treatment levels. Means for grain yield in the 2000 trials, when derived from averages of all agronomic treatments, were strongly (R2 = 83.3%) associated with long-term Maritime maize recommendation trial. However, regression analysis for individual agronomic treatments showed that there was not much effect of different agronomic management practices on the predictive power of trials. The strong agreement between means from the 2000 trials and the long-term means derived from the Maritime recommendation trials indicates that the REML analysis of long-term maize cultivar datasets produces accurate estimates of cultivar effects. Means derived from testing at two locations under recommended fertilizer and plant population levels appears to be highly predictive of long-term cultivar value.
