Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first comprehensive and single-authored book on the functions of the basal ganglia. The goal is to provide a new synthesis of diverse areas of research on the basal ganglia, from cellular mechanisms of synaptic transmission and plasticity to neural circuit mechanisms underlying behavior. A global theory of basal ganglia function incorporating research from the last 40 years is presented. I hope to explain for the first time how the basal ganglia generate behavior, how they contribute to learning and memory, and how impairments in basal ganglia function can lead to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Features The only single-authored book on the basal ganglia with coverage of the latest literature Spans multiple levels of analysis, from cellular physiology to behavior Includes coverage of clinical symptoms, encompassing neuropsychology, movement disorders, and psychiatric disorders Discusses the role of the basal ganglia in learning and memory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brain Dynamics and the Striatal Complex, the first volume in the Conceptual Advances in Brain Research book series, relates dynamic function to cellular structure and synaptic organization in the basal ganglia. The striatum is the largest nucleus within the basal ganglia and therefore plays an important role in understanding structure/function relationships. Areas covered include dopaminergic input to the striatum, organization of the striatum, and the interaction between the striatum and the cerebral cortex.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, great interest has been focused on the field of neurobiology. In the last decade, various international and regional meetings, symposia, seminars and workshops have been organized to discuss brain regions such as the hypothalamus, cerebellum, medulla, cortex and hippocampus. A number of books have been published as a consequence of these gatherings. Uniquely and singularly absent from these conclaves has been a truly interdisciplinary discussion of the amygdala. The various chapters of this book represent the formal talks presented at The Advanced Study Institute held at the Jackson Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine, from June 6 to 17, 1971, with funds made available from the Scientific Affairs Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the National Science Foundation. The speakers and participants are grateful to these two institutions for being given the opportunity to gather and discuss their respective works that represent years of experi mental and clinical research centering on the amygdala. It is hoped that the experiments discussed in this book will act as a major stimulus to other scientists to initiate complementary and supplementary experiments for the better understanding of the specific role of the amygdala.

Book excerpt: The basal ganglia has received much attention over the last two decades, as it has been implicated in many neurological and psychiatric disorders. Most of this research—in both animals and humans—attempt to understand the neural and biochemical substrates of basic motor and learning processes, and how these are affected in human patients as well as animal models of brain disorders. The current volume contains research articles and reviews describing basic, pre-clinical and clinical neuroscience research of the basal ganglia written by attendees of the 11th Triennial Meeting of the International Basal Ganglia Society (IBAGS) that was held March 3-7th, 2013 at the Princess Hotel, Eilat, Israel and by researchers of the basal ganglia. Specifically, articles in this volume include research reports on the biochemistry, computational theory, anatomy and physiology of single neurons and functional circuitry of the basal ganglia networks as well as the latest data on animal models of basal ganglia dysfunction and clinical studies in human patients.

Book excerpt: This comparative approach in neurosciences offers important advantages and provides a suitable, sometimes surprising and unorthodox frame of mind for the interpretation of new findings. The articles covered in this publication are based upon the research work by renowned invited speakers of a professional workshop. The papers provide a comprehensive insight into current issues of brain organization and function in vertebrates across the board. The five main topics include: sensory systems, central pattern generators, calcium-binding proteins, basal ganglia and the development of the cerebral cortex. Questions ranging from brainstem to cerebral cortex, and from anurans to humans are discussed. The publication presents useful and up-to-date analysis of functional systems, such as prey-catching behavior, breeding and mating strategies, efferent innervation of cochlear hair cells and vestibulo-ocular reflexes. This special topical issue is a valuable source of information for all brain researchers, as well as students dealing with neuroscience, because a better understanding of the ontogeny and phylogeny of any brain region or functional system is essential for an in-depth analysis of experimental results.

Book excerpt: As technology has made imaging of the brain noninvasive and inexpensive, nearly every psychologist in every subfield is using pictures of the brain to show biological connections to feelings and behavior. Handbook of Neuroscience for the Behavioral Sciences, Volume I provides psychologists and other behavioral scientists with a solid foundation in the increasingly critical field of neuroscience. Current and accessible, this volume provides the information they need to understand the new biological bases, research tools, and implications of brain and gene research as it relates to psychology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, The Basal Ganglia V, is derived from proceedings of the fifth Triennial Meeting of the International Basal Ganglia Society (IBAGS). The Meeting was held from 23-26 May, 1995, at Nemuno-Sato, in the Mie Prefecture of central Japan, not far from the traditional birth place of the country. As at previous Meetings, our aim was to hear and discuss new ideas and data on the Basal Ganglia. About one hundred papers were presented, on platform or as posters. We had valuable talks, stimulating discussions, and agreeable social contacts. Although just before this Meeting, there were several unusual accidents in Japan, a big earthquake in the Kobe area, not far from the Meeting place, and toxic gas terrorism in Tokyo, some hundred participants came from Europe, the United States, and elsewhere. All through the Meeting days, we were together in a beautiful environment, surrounded by fresh green vegetation, flowers and blue sea, as has been traditional for IBAGS meetings. We spent happy and pleasant sunny days there, with superb accommodation and cuisine. Also following the traditional policy of our Society, this volume has been edited to include as many papers as possible, without any selection. New ideas and data may sometimes be controversial and still immature, but we accepted all and put them together in this volume. We hope that from these fascinating papers, further new principles of basal ganglia action might emerge in the future.
