Book excerpt: With the exception of a few tropical medicine schools worldwide, current medical education programs include almost zero discussion of the interface between infectious diseases and entomology. That is why this book was initially published in the first edition almost 17 years ago. The third edition of this valuable infectious disease entomology book updates all existing chapters with the newest scientific developments described in the medical and entomological literature in addition to covering 10 entirely new topics not addressed in previous editions, which include: · arthropod identification controversies · early beginnings of public health and disease control · red-meat allergy · updates on vaccine development for dengue and malaria · discussion of Chikungunya and Zika viruses · American Boutonnneuse Fever · the newest controversies in Lyme disease · recent findings of viruses in ticks · bed bug bite reactions · Morgellons disease (an imaginary infectious disease)

Book excerpt: This volume in the series is devoted to Africa, a continent that possesses a vast treasure of medicinal plants and has produced some exclusive materials for the world market. This volume is expected to strengthen the medicinal plant sector in African countries by making comprehensive information on medicinal and aromatic plants available to policy-makers and entrepreneurs. It can be used to frame effective policies and create an environment conducive to the growth of the plant-based medicine industry, bringing economic benefit to African nations. It will help health organizations to improve the health of their people by using their own resources and a less expensive system of medicine, which is accepted by African society. It could also lead scientific communities to increase R&D activities in the field.

Book excerpt: Surprising though it seems, the world faces almost as great a threat today from arthropod-borne diseases as it did in the heady days of the 1950s when global eradication of such diseases by eliminating their vectors with synthetic insecticides, particularly DDT, seemed a real possibility. Malaria, for example, still causes tremendous morbidity and mortality throughout the world, especially in Africa. Knowledge of the biology of insect and arachnid disease vectors is arguably more important now than it has ever been. Biological research directed at the development of better methods of control becomes even more important in the light of the partial failure of many control schemes that are based on insecticide- although not all is gloom, since basic biological studies have contributed enormously to the outstanding success of international control programmes such as the vast Onchocerciasis Control Programme in West Africa. It is a sine qua non for proper understanding of the epidemiology and successful vector control of any human disease transmitted by an arthropod that all concerned with the problem - medical entomologist, parasitologist, field technician - have a good basic understanding of the arthropod's biology. Knowledge will be needed not only of its direct relationship to any parasite or pathogen that it transmits but also of its structure, its life history and its behaviour - in short, its natural history. Above all, it will be necessary to be sure that it is correctly identified.

Book excerpt: Management of benign anorectal disorders is challenging for the treating surgeons as the patients are highly distressed, the symptoms are always alarming, and surgical intervention may be associated with lifelong disabilities such as loss of sphincter control. Written by highly experienced colorectal surgeons, this book provides detailed notes on optimal management of these disorders including pre- and post-operative management. Chapters cover the entire range of benign disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula-in-ano, anorectal injuries, anal incontinence, rectal prolapse, pelvic floor disorders, benign tumors and ulcers, and strictures. Chapters on surgical anatomy and physiology equip the surgeons with the information necessary to understand the complex anatomy and functioning of this region which makes surgery all the more difficult. Benign Anorectal Disorders is an essential reading for colorectal surgeons, general surgeons, fellows-in-training and the post-graduate students.
