Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teeth and their surrounding structures are exceptional sources for addressing significant questions in numerous disciplines. In this publication, an international, multidisciplinary team of researchers addresses important issues on current aspects of dental morphology research from evolutionary, anatomical, clinical and archaeological perspectives. In combining leading-edge methods of data acquisition and analyses, such as molecular analyses and highly advanced non-destructive imaging technologies, the book demonstrates how information about various aspects of dental morphology can be used to explore the evolution of vertebrate life histories, a subject most relevant to our own species. The chapters provide profound discussions on dental evolution, dental morphology, dental tissues, dental growth and development, as well as on clinical aspects of dental morphology. As a special feature, the publication provides new information about the role of teeth as tools in reconstructing the nature and behaviour of past populations. This book will serve as an important reference for researchers of dental sciences, anatomy, evolutionary biology, paleoanthropology, paleontology, archaeology, prehistoric anthropology, comparative anatomy, genetics, embryology, and forensic medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative anatomy is the study of body structures of different species in order to understand the adaptive changes they have undergone in the course of evolution.Comparative Dental Anatomy deals with comparative study of morphology of teeth and their related structures in different animals and also between members of the same species. Study on comparative anatomy can be traced back to scattered anatomical observations made by ancient Greeks. Now it has progressed even further with the recent concepts on molecular and genetic similarities between species. In this book an attempt has been made to compare the dentition and related structures of various animals. The chapters provide discussions on dental evolution, dental morphology and the anatomic variations in teeth jaws and muscles of mastication according to the animal's feeding habits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A market-leading dental anatomy textbook for dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students, Woelfel's Dental Anatomy focuses on anatomy of the human mouth and teeth, and is designed to help the student understand the relationship of the teeth to one another, and to the bones, muscles, nerves, and vessels associated with the teeth and face. This text does more than simply explain dental anatomy; it links the anatomy to clinical practice, giving readers a stronger and more practical understanding of tooth structure and function, morphology, anatomy, and terminology. Chapters have been revised and reorganized into three parts—Comparative Tooth Anatomy, Application of Tooth Anatomy in Dental Practice, and Anatomic Structures of the Oral Cavity—to make the material more accessible to dental hygiene programs. The companion website offers Student Resources for an enhanced learning experience with an interactive image bank, image labeling exercises, and PowerPoint presentations. Instructor Resources include a test generator, an interactive image bank, PowerPoint presentations, and answers to the book's critical thinking questions.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... Comparative Dental Anatomy. CHAPTER I. GENERAL ZOOLOGY AND COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. (1) The Animal Kingdom is divided into two sub-kingdoms, --viz, (a) Invertebrates and (b) Vertebrates. These sub-kingdoms are further subdivided into classes; classes are divided into orders, orders into families, families into genera, and genera into species. Species is the last division into which animals can be classified, but if the individuals of a species vary much from the normal type, they may be classed as sub-species or varieties. All animals are grouped with reference to their plan of structure, and classification is made according to the system of organization, and without regard to superficial characters or resemblances except so far as external features may have reference to functions. (2) Vertebrates and Invertebrates are distinguished from each other by the presence or absence of a vertebral column or backbone. The Vertebrates have a cerebro-spinal axis and a strong bony column composed of separate pieces called vertebrae, which are connected together by ligaments and are more or less movable. The sub-kingdom of the Invertebrates comprises all classes of animals which do not have a vertebral column, whatever their various plans of structure may be. The class of the Vertebrates is therefore homogeneous, and that of the Invertebrates very heterogeneous. (3) The sub-kingdom of the Invertebrates includes all animals which have no internal backbone or vertebral column: such as the Infusoria, Hydroids, Radiata, Worms, Insecta, Crustacea, Mollusca, etc. There is no spinal cord with its anterior enlargement, the brain, in the Invertebrates, but instead the nervous system consists of chains of ganglia scattered throughout the system, arranged in rows or..
