Book excerpt: Published to celebrate the awarding of the 2014 Nobel Prize in physics to Shuji Nakumura, this newly revised edition of a 2007 book profiles the gifted Japanese engineer who is largely responsible for the coming revolution in lighting technology. He came out of nowhere to stun the world with his announcement that he had created the last piece in the puzzle needed for manufacturing solid-state white lights. The invention of this holy-grail product, which promises to make Edison's light bulb obsolete, had eluded the best minds at the top electronic firms for twenty-five years. Thanks to Nakamura's work, the technology of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is ready for widespread implementation. Its impacts will include a reduction in energy consumption for electric lighting by up to 80 percent. This revised edition contains a new preface and an afterword that summarizes Nakamura's most recent accomplishments. In 2008, he and two other scientists founded a company called Soraa (which means sky in Japanese). In 2012, the firm debuted a new technology, based on improved crystal growth (using a technique pioneered by Shuji). It enables second-generation LEDs that are much smaller, more energy-efficient, produce better color, and most likely will replace halogen lights. Besides the Nobel Prize, Nakamura is also the winner of the prestigious $1.5 million Millennium Technology Prize and Japan's Order of Culture Award. Veteran technology writer Bob Johnstone is the first Western journalist to meet and interview Nakamura and he has received the brilliant engineer's full cooperation through a series of exclusive interviews given for the book.

Book Synopsis A General History of Horology by : Turner
Download or read book A General History of Horology written by Turner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A General History of Horology describes instruments used for the finding and measurement of time from Antiquity to the 21st century. In geographical scope it ranges from East Asia to the Americas. The instruments described are set in their technical and social contexts, and there is also discussion of the literature, the historiography and the collecting of the subject. The book features the use of case studies to represent larger topics that cannot be completely covered in a single book. The international body of authors have endeavoured to offer a fully world-wide survey accessible to students, historians, collectors, and the general reader, based on a firm understanding of the technical basis of the subject. At the same time as the work offers a synthesis of current knowledge of the subject, it also incorporates the results of some fundamamental, new and original research.

Book Synopsis Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship by : Jean-Pierre Jeannet
Download or read book Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship written by Jean-Pierre Jeannet and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-21 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book focuses on Switzerland-based medium-sized companies with a longstanding export tradition and a proven dominance in global niche markets. Based upon in-depth documentation and analysis of 36 Swiss companies over their entire history, an expert team of authors presents several parallels in the pathways and success factors which allowed these firms to become dominant and operate from a high-cost location such as Switzerland. The book enhances these insights by providing detailed company profiles documenting the company history, development, and how their relevant global niche positions were reached. Readers will benefit from these profiles as they compile a diverse selection of industries, mainly active within the B2B sector, with mostly mature companies (60 years to older than 100 years since founding) and different types of ownership structures including family firms. ‘Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship’ brings unique learning opportunities to owners and leaders of SMEs in Switzerland and elsewhere. Findings are based on detailed bottom-up research of 36 companies -- without any preconceived notions. The book is both conceptual and practical. It fosters understanding for different choices in development pathways and management practices. Matti Alahuhta, Chairman DevCo Partners, ex-CEO Kone, Board member of several global listed companies, Helsinki, Finland Start-up entrepreneurs need proven models from industry which demonstrate the various paths to success. “Masterpieces of Swiss Entrepreneurship” provides deep insights highlighting these models and the important trade-offs entrepreneurial teams must consider when choosing the path of high growth or of maximum control, as they are often mutually exclusive. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fundamentals and Applications of Light-Emitting Diodes: The Revolution in the Lighting Industry examines the evolution of LEDs, including a review of the luminescence process and background on solid state lighting. The book emphasizes phosphor-converted LEDs that are based on inorganic phosphors but explores different types of LEDs based on inorganic, organic, quantum dots, perovskite-structured materials, and biomaterials. A detailed description is included about the diverse applications of LEDs in fields such as lighting, displays, horticulture, biomedicine, and digital communication, as well as challenges that must be solved before using LEDs in commercial applications. Traditional light sources are fast being replaced by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The fourth generation of lighting is completely dominated by LED luminaires. Apart from lighting, LEDs have extended their hold on other fields, such as digital communications, horticulture, medicine, space research, art and culture, display devices, and entertainment. The technological promises offered by LEDs have elevated them as front-runners in the lighting industry. Presents a concise overview of different types of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on inorganic phosphors, organic materials, quantum dots, perovskite-structured materials, and biomaterials Includes a discussion of current and emerging applications in lighting, communications, horticulture, and medical fields Addresses fundamentals, luminescence mechanisms, and key optical materials, including synthesis methods
