Book excerpt: Hal Marshall, analytical and circumspect executive with San Francisco Inks (SFinks), breaks with tradition when he abruptly invites young Jack Masters and Jack's mother, Paige, to help him save a struggling corporate experiment in America's heartland. Does the trio have what it takes to combat who-or what-holds SFinks-Painestown in a death grip? Is it too late to avert disaster? "What a delightful way to approach such pervasive yet sensitive human resources issues. The dialogue sparkles with humor." -Sharon Downing Jarvis, best-selling author "Telling a story is always an invitation for learning. The story of SFinks-Painestown reveals much about behaviors that impede productivity. The authors cleverly invite us to consider whether these behaviors get our attention just because we get irritated or, rather, because we seek to illuminate the consequences of these behaviors. This is a story being told daily in the workplace and one from which we all can learn " -Dr. Kate Kirkham, Director, Dyer Institute for Leading Organizational Change, Marriott School of Management Cover design: John R. Book excerpt: Jean Shepherd (1921-1999) master humorist is best known for his creation ÊA Christmas StoryÊ the popular movie about the child who wants a BB gun for Christmas and nearly shoots his eye out. What else did Shepherd do? He is considered by many to be the Mark Twain and James Thurber of his day. For many thousands of fans for decades Shep talked on the radio late at night keeping them up way past their bedtimes. He entertained without a script improvising like a jazz musician on any and every subject you can imagine. He invented and remains the master of talk radio. Shepherd perpetrated one of the great literary hoaxes of all time promoting a nonexistent book and author and then brought the book into existence. He wrote 23 short stories for ÊPlayboyÊ four times winning their humor of the year award and also interviewed The Beatles for the magazine. He authored several popular books of humor and satire created several television series and acted in several plays. He is the model for the character played by Jason Robards in the play and movie ÊA Thousand ClownsÊ as well as the inspiration for the Shel Silverstein song made famous by Johnny Cash A Boy Named Sue. Readers will learn the significance of innumerable Shepherd words and phrases such as Excelsior you fathead and observe his constant confrontations with the America he loved. They will get to know and understand this multitalented genius by peeking behind the wall he built for himself ä a wall to hide a different and less agreeable persona. Through interviews with his friends co-workers and creative associates such as musician David Amram cartoonist and playwright Jules Feiffer publisher and broadcaster Paul Krassner and author Norman Mailer the book explains a complex and unique genius of our time. Shepherd pretty much invented talk radio ... What I got of him was a wonder at the world one man could create. I am as awed now by his achievement as I was then. ä Richard Corliss ÊTimeÊ magazine online

Book excerpt: Reviews of the two-volume New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, 2005: The king is dead. Long live the king! The old Partridge is not really dead; it remains the best record of British slang antedating 1945 Now, however, the preferred source for information about English slang of the past 60 years is the New Partridge. James Rettig, Booklist, American Library Association Most slang dictionaries are no better than momgrams or a rub of the brush, put together by shmegegges looking to make some moola. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, on the other hand, is the wee babes. Ian Sansom, The Guardian The Concise New Partridge presents, for the first time, all the slang terms from the New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English in a single volume. With over 60,000 entries from around the English-speaking world, the Concise gives you the language of beats, hipsters, Teddy Boys, mods and rockers, hippies, pimps, druggies, whores, punks, skinheads, ravers, surfers, Valley girls, dudes, pill-popping truck drivers, hackers, rappers and more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effect of chlorinated municipal wastes on fish life and laboratory findings of earlier researchers were assessed in separate studies at four Michigan municipal wastewater treatment plants. Tolerance levels and river length below each plant outfall rendered unavailable to resident fish populations were determined. Ten rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and ten fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas), previously acclimated, were held 96 hours in live boxes in the stream above and below these outfalls. Fish held below these outfalls were subjected to both chlorinated and non-chlorinated exposures during effluent discharge. Test waters were monitored chemically and bacteriologically during fish exposure. Total residual chlorine concentrations below three plants were toxic to rainbow trout at distances up to 0.8 mile. Fathead minnows appeared adversely affected up to 0.6 mile downstream in two of the four plants. Total residual chlorine concentrations less than 0.1 mg/l were toxic to fathead minnows. Rainbow trout 96-hour total residual chlorine TL-50 concentration below two plants was 0.023 mg/l.

Book excerpt: Over the last century, the medium of animation has served as an expression of childhood as well as a method of subverting the expectations of what society has promised for the future. Separated into three parts, this work assembles various explorations of taste, culture and passion through animation. Section I features essays that outline the historical changes in art and society that gave rise to an outsider culture that found a home in animation. In the second section, essays examine the practical use of animation as a voice for the underserved. Finally, in Section III, essays analyze the ways in which animation has reshaped the acceptance of outsider status to embrace otherness. Featuring everything from feature-length films to self-produced YouTube videos, the essays in this text reflect a shared love of animation and its unique ability to comment on society and culture.

Book excerpt: The book summarizes and reviews the environmental and human safety of two classes of nonionic surfactants-alcohol ethoxylates (AE) and alkylphenol ethoxylates (APE). This unique resource contains critical data from published sources as well as from unpublished studies submitted by Soap and Detergent Association member companies. It reviews information on product chemistry and analysis, biodegradation, environmental levels (including fate and distribution), aquatic toxicity, and human safety. Recently developed analytical techniques for the extraction, separation, detection, and measurement of nonionic surfactants and their metabolites in environmental samples are described. Results of biodegradation studies performed with a variety of test systems are tabulated, as are results of field studies at wastewater treatment plants. Reported comparisons of environmental levels with results of acute and chronic aquatic toxicity tests are provided. The information on the toxicity and irritation potential of AE and APE surfactants includes data from in vitro, mammalian, and human studies.
