Book excerpt: Excerpt from Companionable Books By companionable books I mean those that are worth taking with you on a journey, where the weight of luggage counts, or keeping beside your bed, near the night-l& books that will bear read ing often, and the more slowly you read them the better you enjoy them; books that not only tell you how things look and how people behave, but also interpret nature and life to you, in language of beauty and power touched with the personality of the author, so that they have a real voice audible to your spirit in the silence. He has been able, in an unusual degree, to give himself out to his readers, to share with them his purposes, his tastes, his experience of life. For it is in the mutual appreciation of these things that congeniality between people usually begins, and it is in the stimulus, the suggestion, the criticism to be derived from them that companionship is al ways fostered. The best friends are they who share fully and imaginatively each other's purposes, tastes, and past experience. And if this is the gist Of a man's relation to his fellows, it may also be the secret of his intimacy with his companionable books. In the case of Stevenson and his readers this seems to be especially full of meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He passed as a good man, but this was rather a negative reputation, for he had never been put to any severe test. He passed as a useful man, but this was because the standard of useful ness had never been critically examined. He passed for a companionable man, but this was among persons who were socially not exacting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Magnhild: A Tale of Psychic Love This volume is offered to the world with the sincere hope that its readers will not only find it expository of the spiritual, in contrast with the carnal and socio-com mercial side of love and marriage, but may realize in it as well one of those companionable books that tempt us out of doors and keep us there. Hence the philosophy Of the story is relieved by episodes in themselves enter taining and instructive. The episode entitled The Fisherman of Lake Sunapee has long been referred to the pen of Charles Dickens, and there are points Of agree ment with the American Notes which confirm the theory that, if not the novelist himself, some one of his com pany wrote the pathetic tale which appeared in a number of English magazines during the late forties and was ex tensively copied in American periodicals. The scene of the story is laid partly at Lake Sunapee in Central New Hampshire, and partly in the City of New York. Whoever built that house had built it for use, only for use. Neither pillar, pediment, nor gable broke the outline of its solid front, which had now stood the chance and change of five centuries. It is reached by a zigzag bridle-path, cut in the mountain-side, which leads up from the Franconia Notch road. The cabin and lake are a thousand feet above the road. Both road and bridle-path go through the primeval forest. No axe of lumberman has, hitherto, desecrated this forest sanctuary. The expression "primeval forest" is little understood by many who use it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Biographical and Historical Dictionary The following work presents itself to the public with no claims to attention, but such as are founded upon the interest, which may be felt in the lives of Americans. Finding himself a few years ago in a literary retirement, with no important duties, which pressed immediately upon him, the author conceived the plan of this dictionary. He was desirous of bringing to the citizens of the United States more information, than was generally possessed, respecting the illustrious men of former times, the benefactors and ornaments of this country, who have passed away. He persuaded himself, that if he could collect the fragments of biography, which were buried in the mass of American history, or scattered amidst a multitude of tracts of various kinds, and could fashion these materials into a regular form, so as to place before the eye our great and good men, if not in their full dimensions, yet in their true shape, he should render an acceptable service to his countrymen. This work with no little labor he has now completed; and the inexperienced artist, in his first essay, can hope only, that his design will be commended. He wishes chiefly, that as the images of departed excellence are surveyed, the spirit, which animated them, may be caught by the beholder. As an apology however for the deficiences and errors of various kinds, which may be found in the work, a full exposition of his plan, and some representation of the difficulty of executing it seem to be necessary. No one knows better than we do what an infinitesimal part it is of the four years that have gone. Yet we expect from it only the returns well 'within its capabilities. If we have given you in this mixture of words, and pictures anything that will touch a responsive chord ofi memory in the years to come, our work will not have gone in vain. All of us hate to be accused of sentimentality - we scofi at its manifestations and leave it for the weak ones. But these four years have been important to us and - yes - precious. It will be comforting in future, unfamiliar and lonely surroundings to recall the friends and words and faces of these companionable years. We hope this book will be something that will help you to remember your days at Classical High. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes, Vol. 4 I was staying in the West of Ireland when these birds first won my heart. The two I refer to were taken from the nest very young, and so petted and companionable had they become, that, stranger to them though I was, they used to swoop into my bedroom window and alight on my pillow with much cawing, and scolding, too, if I dared ever so gently to remove them. I am rather afraid to let the two I am happy enough to possess fly loose, like my friends in Mayo; and the charm of their perfect tameness and their love for human companionship cannot be seen to full advantage; but there are so many young puppies, dogs and cats about that my heart fails me to open the aviary doors, and let them range at their own sweet will.
